I don't mind Coffee and Cigarettes, I had a great time last time I watched it. For me, the eight Jim Jarmusch films I've seen are all above average. Coffee and Cigarettes is a 4/5.

I have Mystery Train sitting around my house somewhere. I'll watch it soon. I want to give Jarmusch another go.

Please do, it's a marvelous film, it really is! I mean funny, dramatical, mysterious, interesting, cool, sweet, nice and all that.

I just bought and watched Dead Man. WOW! 9/10 Hey, why not 10/10? I certainly think it's that good! I got it on DVD too and am going get the soundtrack by Neil Young. The use of music is genius, don't you think Sacrilegend?

Yes! I didn't want to get the soundtrack though, because it all sounded the same. Even though it was SUPERB, it was just too much of the same great music. it did so much for the movie! (On this subject, have you ever heard the soundtrack to Twin Peaks? It's AMAZING.)
I think 9/10 because I am much more passionate about movies that make normal people think: "What the fuck?". That's my kind of movie. This one was just almost bordering on normal. Don't get me wrong, I know that this is such a multi-faceted movie, and that I haven't even begun to see (let alone understand) half of it. I haven't formed my thoughts on this yet! Get back to me after I've watched it again and I'll have a more concrete answer for you.
One thing that I can say is that the killing in this movie was my favourite ever. It was done in the best way possible, in such good taste.
Looks like a goddamn religious icon!
My kinds of movies are ones which are so out there, you feel that you're transported to another world while watching them. The other kind I love is in which nothing happens. At all. This was just in the middle, and just not my favourite. I think I'll list my favourites tonight for all of you.

No Coffee and Cigarettes?? :-(
Could you please tell me what Ghost Dog is about? The only place I've ever heard of it is on this thread.

Ghost Dog is seriously one of the most amazing films ever. You owe it to yourself to see it. Also, the less you know the better.

The reason Coffee and Cigarettes is absent is because I haven't seen it. I dislike Ghost Dog, but I can see why people like it.

Okay then. Watch it! It's a perfect analysis of hauman behaviour and interaction. And I loved it. That's enough motivation.
agentknight - I'll go get it, maybe next weekend but I doubt it because I have my Valentine's ball on Saturday. Maybe Friday night, if my friends aren't going out and dragging me along. I'm pretty lucky that our video store is managed by a guy who considers himself a film-buff, and will find any challenging to find film for you, just for you to rent. I'll enquire about Ghost Dog, and I'll watch it without probing more into what it's about. Thank-you!

Ghost Dog has a good deal of hip-hop music in the movie, so if your tolerance toward hip-hop is not that high, you may not like it. To be honest, though, the hip-hop in Ghost Dog is better than most that you'll find, so even if you don't care for hip-hop, at least the music isn't thoroughly bad. I think it's a great movie, and I do enjoy the hippity hoppity, but even disregarding that, one thing I really like about the movie is that I think it's pretty spot-on too. The culture, the culture-clash, the little things you pick up on, they all work.
That's one thing I like about Jarmusch. All of the movies I've seen by him have a careful attention to accuracy, not just in terms of culture but nuanced in how people really are. For example, Dead Man did seem too vulgar at times, which I don't mind myself but kind of took me out of the movie, but on the other hand, that's just how some people talk, so it's not too bad.
He has yet to thoroughly amaze me with a 10/10 movie, but he has yet to let me down. I gave Ghost Dog, Coffee and Cigarettes and Dead Man all 9/10s.

The only things I have no tolerance of are stupidity and ignorance. Insolence. Close-mindedness. Everything else, I can tolerate and mostly enjoy.
If the film is by Jarmusch, I'm sure I won't be seeing any of these qualities in it. Thank goodness.

Down by Law will be that amazing 10/10 film you're looking for. Or Stranger Than Paradise.

WOW!My absolute favourite vignette, entitled "Champagne" from Coffee and Cigarettes. Yay! That's a great scene. But I think Night On Earth is a much better film and you know it's similar to Coffee And Cigarettes. I got it on DVD and watched three vignettes this morning, I had forgotten how hilarious and cool the film was. Anyone else seen Night On Earth?

Yeah, I've seen it - and liked it alot. I think I like the scene with the blind woman the most. But I don't really know. Need to watch it again soon (I have it on dvd), because it's a film where some of the thoughts and stuff put into it have a tendency to drown in all the talk. What I'm trying to say is that a rewatch should do good. And justice to the film. I remember it as great, noenetheless, though, and it's really difficult to say which of the "vignettes" I think is best. What is shown in this film - and every Jarmuch-film that I've seen - is the directors eye for the everyday situations and how he kind of unstrained deliver these situastions to us viewers. We kind of sit there, with these people, observing what could easily have been real-life situations.

Night on Earth is actually being released by Criterion if you didn't see. They did this thing where you could give suggestions while they were making the DVD; I posted it somewhere a while ago. I haven't seen it myself, but when it is released I will check it out. Also, Stranger than Paradise is coming out on Criterion.

[1] Down by Law [2] Dead Man [3] Night on Earth [4] Stranger than Paradise [5] Broken Flowers [6] Mystery Train [7] Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai [8] Coffee and Cigarettes [9] Permanent Vacation
I give all but Permanent Vacation at least a 9. PV isn't bad, probably just the least interesting. Beginning and closing scenes are great though
