I like Miyazaki, but out of the three of his films that I've seen, I think Princess Mononoke is the weakest one. The main characters in it are really 'blah', plus the whole story is the least imaginative compared to Nausicaa and Spirited Away. It has neither the character development of Spirit Away nor the epic grandness of Nausicaa.

Yeah, that was the incorrect answer from andruini. While I'm not familiar with Iranian movies as a whole, I must say that Princess Mononoke's influence on Japanese animation can be seen to this day. I don't think Taste of Cherry had that same kind of total shockwave on fans and movers-and-shakers alike. So far, nine from the 60s compared to thirteen from the 70s on my Top 100. I just like the style of 70s movies. I do like some movies from the 80s, but really, the culture was just really shitty at that time. We as a collective whole didn't shed all of that bullshit until the mid-ninties, and the movies reflect that. Some of it was good, but the years of, say, 1984-1994 were slow; Japanese animation did well during that period, as did the auteurs like Kurosawa and Tarantino, but how about society as a whole? (Interesting how we're headed into the same kind of thing today. The auteurs always do well, and animation is hitting a peak with Paprika and My Beautiful Girl, Mari and MIND GAME, but how's shit doing on the outside? Fantasstic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer? Sequels up the ass? Shrek 5? A friend of mine invited me to a movie tonight and he gave me like ten titles, and none of them would stir me. Shit's going slow; it's all political.) Actually, I've been seeing the documentary of Easy Riders, Raging Bulls for the past few days. I might check it out now. You need to check your PMs, criterionmaster. exactly, i was at a theater in canada thinking there might be something good playing, unlike our theaters, but nope, same old crap. how can there not be a single good movie out of 10-12 movies playing!? in the 70's if that many movies were playing, or even decades before that, there would have been probably like 3-4 interesting movies, at least. it is so rare that we get more than one interesting movie playing at a time, if we even get one! the 80's definitely had some good films, especially looking back now, but say you were to have grown up in the 80's, at the same age and same knowledge of film you have now, you probably would have disliked it as much as you dislike the movies nowadays, since there were so many comedy rip-offs and such, which is what is happening with horror films now. though i am not saying that the 80's is near as bad as this decade, just that there was a lot of crap, and even more than me or you care to know about. movies that have been completely forgotten, for good reasons. as you might have seen, i just mentioned me wanting to see some more movies from the 70's over in that "movies you need to see" thread. it is the decade i am definitely most into now. you mention good films that are coming out, such as the animated films you named, but really, i can't even count those since they don't even actually come out! i haven't seen like any of those play at a theater near me, which makes me sick. yeah, that documentary is really worth checking out, as is the book. definitely some interesting and fun stories told. i have been on vacation, so i have gotten behind on pm's. i will read and respond to yours now, though.
