Hell Yeah! I am glad to see Day of the Dead getting some love! It is my favorite of the trilogy too.

I'm not too big into horror, myself. That said, the three movies I'll list aren't definitive, as I have yet to see too many horror movies.


Jaws - Nothing more needs to be said here.

Kalifornia - Now, this isn't really a conventional horror movie. Basically, the horror elements in the movie are essentially scenes that remind me of what people tell me good horror - like the Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes (1978). And the best part about this movie is that it sparked some interest in the horror genre, for me at least. So, that's why I consider it a horror movie. Even if it doesn't really have much in the way of horror.

Ringu - Now this is what I would call a beautiful horror movie. Great cinematography. If you took out the horror elements out of the entire movie, you'd still be left with a great looking movie to work with. As for the horror, it is there, but I actually really enjoyed it.

I put in a little bit of the Ring, and basically skipped around the movie. No awesome cinematography, everything's bluntly explained to you like you're a seven year old, cheap thrills. I need to watch it proper before writing it off, but definitely, definitely, Ringu is a good movie. Except...

{SPOILER} {HEY, I SAID SPOILER!} for the ending, which I thought was a cop-out. Just take out the last five minutes of the movie and it'd be a really great horror movie. Then again I'm talking about taking out the most well known part of the movie, but what are you going to do? {/THE SPOILER WAS STRIKED OUT SO IT'D BE HARDER TO READ} {/SPOILER}

A friend of mine is going to lend me Saw on Wednesday. That should be an interesting one.

edit0: Saw should be interesting because it's entirely different than most movies I watch.

edit1: Ringu is kind of vague. It doesn't really tell you everything, like you don't hear the stuff on the phone like in the Ring, and things are implied rather than directly stated. I think this works better, partly for the "seven year old" reason I mentioned earlier, but mostly because it allows you to really think about the movie. It leaves you curious, which is good.

Really what makes a good horror film is the atmosphere, which I truly believe has been lost in horror films now. You can't get a film to look like a Texas Chainsaw Massacre or a Carnival of Souls these days. Without atmosphere films are left with cheap scares and gore.

My Favorite(s):

1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre - like I have said many times before this is my favorite horror film. A film that could not be duplicated no matter how hard Michael Bay tries. It is the scariest, creepiest, most real-feeling horror film I have ever seen. The dinner scene gives me shivers and is one of the most fudged up things I have ever seen. The "score" to the film is shocking and bold, and scary as hell. The performances are brilliant. There is really nothing I need to say about the film, I think you can watch it and see what I mean.



2. Day of the Dead - "the darkest day of horror the world has ever known" is an understatement when it comes to this masterpiece. It was such an amazing film and one that I had never seen anything like. The effects are still some of my favorite zombie effects ever. Just everything about this film works and is convincing. And the film has Bub (!); the best zombie of all-time.



I think the horror genre is the best genre ever; it is the easiest genre for people to work with. There is just something about being scared that hits me and makes me love these films. I hate the direction that horror is going these days, but maybe one day it will turn around. At least with the Eerie Horror Film Fest I get to see some independent horror that is still good, so it gives me hope that people still have original ideas for the genre, since there are really so many places you can take it.

You really think that horror is the best genre ever?

I have seen too little in this genre, but I totally agree with criterionmaster when he says that atmosphere is the single most important thing in a horror film. Bad acting, for example, doesn't necessarily make a horror film less good; it`s the atmosphere that (most often) decide whether a horror film is interesting or not. Just look at Dario Argentos horror masterpieces. Suspiria is all atmosphere. Same with George A. Romeros trilogy of the Dead, not to mention Carpenter's The Thing (Yes, all these are among my favorite horrors of all time).

One thing I truly like about horror films, is that you can say so much about us and the society we live in through these monsters that fills the screen.

But, yes, the atmosphere is the most important thing. It`s a bonus if a horror manages to really say something. Oh my god, I love Romero so much it nearly makes me sick.

Haha, yes Romero is God! I didn't mean it was the best genre, but it is definitely my favorite genre. For the simple fact that I can watch a horror film in any mood, and the fact that I love so-bad-they-are-good films, which are generally horror films. They are just so much fun, but I obviously like all genres.

And I agree that horror is a great genre to talk about our society. The way Romero uses zombies to get points and messages across proves this point.
