Overrated. Everything he's done since Blue Velvet (his best) is crap.

Nononono! He is far from overrated, he is underrated! Lynch is one of the most original, artistic and most interesting contemporary filmmakers operating in America.
Here's how I rank the films from Lynch which I've seen:
1. The Elephant Man 2. Mulholland Dr. 3. Eraserhead 4. Blue Velvet 5. The Straight Story 6. Wild At Heart 7. Lost Highway 8. Dune
I have yet to see Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

Lynch kicks ass. Probably my favorite director (but Fellini would be if I had seen more than two of his film).

Alphabet (David Lynch; 1968) 10/10Lynch truly made one of the most original shorts I have seen. Tons of weird shapes and things spit out letters of the alphabet while weird sounds play. It was so weird, strange, insane, but also brilliant. Definitely check this thing out.

Alphabet is awesome...and weird, yes!
Is it true that Lynch painted his room in his house completely black to film this short?

Okay, I'm not going to mention this on the Seen Any Good Movies Lately? thread, or whatever yours is called here.
I saw twenty minutes of Dune on TV (until shortly after the shield fight) and I must say that I was impressed. It was a complete universe, so of course they were going over a bunch of names for planets and stuff, but they handled it well.
I wanted to see the whole thing properly. At first, it looked really neat in widescreen with the black bars and the DUNE, but after the whole introduction thing, it suddenly switched to fullscreen.
So, there ya go. Here I thought he did some really wonky things. Maybe they're to come, but anyways, yeah, positive opinion.

The other thread can be for Inland Empire. not gonna lie, not at all a fan of eraserhead. I mean, i understand and appreciate the symbolism about one's fear of parenthood and all, but by god, using cow fetus babies, a lady with chipmunk cheeks, and little twitching chickens to get that point across just ain't my thing. That sounds hilarious, although I'm going to have to agree with the C-Master: I want to see Eraserhead but it doesn't sound like my cup 'o tea. Lynch is hit-or-miss for me; his approach is a turn off a lot of times. I still haven't seen that much Lynch, but based off of what I know of his wacky side, it doesn't appeal to me that much.

Yeah, I'm a total Lynch nut and even I think the surrealism and imagery in Eraserhead is totally over the top and stupid.

What made you change your mind? You gave the film a ten in the "Rate the Last Film You Watched" thread. It was quite high on your list as well.

Well that is a pretty drastic change to make in just a couple of months. Why was your reaction so strong? That seems to have happened to a few films with you, you react with tens and then a couple months later you hate the movie (another I can think of I think was Zatoichi).

I don't know why I lost interest in Zatoichi... I guess some films stick with me and others don't.

I exalted you for saying that, he's my favourite director. Except Mullholland Drive is my favourite, and Elephant Man is lower. It upset me too much to have seen it from a critical point of view.

Thanks, perhaps you should give The Elephant Man another go? Apropos, It's been over one year since I saw it last. I cried when I saw it for the first time, and I cried the last time I saw The Straight Story which was sometime before the summer. I usually doesn't cry that much... So both incidents were rich moments. Strange...

I even cried during The Incredibles (don't ask). But I'm going to watch it again(The Elephant Man), in April. Maybe. The next Lynch film I want to see is Short Films by David Lynch. I doubt I'll find it easily, though.

Definitively give The Elephant Man a rewatch. It's my favorite Lynch, and I, too, cried in many parts. Especially in the "Romero and Julie"-scene and the end sequence, where he goes to sleep like a "normal" person. Totally brilliant film.

I am definitely going to rewatch, and this time, I'm going to do so without too much emotion, or try to at least. It's hard for me. I cried most in that crude part, about the men who take the women to see him. I'm a fighter for causes, that is the absolute worst thing in the world for me, seeing people being maltreated. That's why I can't stand alot of movies.
