dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?cat=1&id=dc41288THE BEST1. Pulp Fiction (one of the best, most fun, well-written films I have ever seen. in my top 20) 2. Simpsons (the worst two seasons [so far out] are still stunning, and crush at least 70% of all film.) 3. Adventures of Pete & Pete (don't know why I don't have this yet. such a great show.) THE WORST (out of the ones I have seen, there might be worse ones I haven't) 1. Elf (really, just complete shit. not funny for one second, just annoying) 2. Garden State (the fakest, most pretentious film I probably have ever seen. the man cannot write.) 3. Club Dread (just a unfunny film. i don't really find cheap, poorly written, performed comedy. it just isn't funny to me.)

CRITERIONMASTER THE ONES I WOULD NEVER BUY A Beautiful Mind Rain Man Titanic BEST (ones that I like most) Wham Bam Thank You Spaceman Goldfinger Star Trek (Original Seies) A FEW RANDOM DVDs I OWN THAT I THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE Vampyres A Scream In The Streets 3 Women I can see why you wouldn't like those films; they are very Hollywood, which doesn't seem to be your favorite. But I saw Rain Man and Titanic when I was young, and Titanic was one of the best theater experiences I have ever seen in my life. I am not ashamed for having it. Beautiful Mind, I really like. I am afraid to re-watch it though. Haha! The best ones are awesome. Wham! Bam is hilarious, SO FUCKING BAD, yet so good. Goldfinger, the best of the Bond films; I really need to re-watch it again, probably with one of the commentaries on the disc. Star Trek, thank you! I really need to get the rest of the series; I just wish some of the episodes had commentary, besides that text commentary. Did you watch any episodes with those, by the way? ‘Cause I don’t know if they are worth watching. 3 Women is on my queue, and I am sure I will dig it. I love what I have seen of Altman (Short Cuts, Nashville, etc.). Oh wait, I didn't really like Tanner '88, but oh well. The other two are definitely two films I need to check out. Vampyres is one cult film I have heard mentioned many times, and the other film I saw you gave super high ratings to it (perfect). I can't wait.

LORDOFDANCE
Worst 1. Sealab (after multiple watches, I am just not that big a fan of the show. it isn't the worst or anything, but it just isn't great.) 2. Au Hasard Balthazar (I liked it, but found it very overrated upon first watching, but the more I think about it, the less I like it. the performances are so bad, I know, they weren't actors, but I just don't care about anything that is happening to them. I still give it a 7/10 probably though, because it is great, simple filmmaking.) 3. The Exorcist Box Set (the first one is amazing, but not like one of the best horror films ever, the rest, ugh. I haven't seen the new ones, but they look really bad.)
(I almost put Showgirls, but I know that is a cult film, and I can kinda see why you like it, so I did another three.)
Best 1. 400 Blows (one of the best films ever made, and quite possible the best debut film from ANY director, EVER) 2. Texas Chain Saw Massacre (the best, or second best, horror movie ever made. I just re-watched this two days ago, and the art elements of it are so fucking fantastic, and the horror elements work so well. seeing this on the big screen was one of the best moments of my life. the sound effects sounded so perfect in the dark of the theater.) 3. Children of Paradise (or Battle of Algiers) (I have been reading about Children of Paradise so much yesterday, and getting happy about that film all over again. three hours rarely fly by so fast. it has been called the best French film ever made, and I can easily see that.) (Battle of Algiers is just excellent at everything it tries to do.
One's I Wish I Had 1. Eric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales (I saw My Night At Maud's, blew me fucking away. I cannot wait to see the rest; I kinda have access to most of the films in the collection in some way or another at my library, but wished I owned this.) 2. Spirit of the Beehive (I need to get this so I can watch the rest of the features. also so i can show my parents the film.) 3. Wages of Fear (one of the most suspenseful films ever, and just an all around classic.)
(Probably so many others I need)
DVD's You Should Check Out 1. John Cassavetes Five Films (have you seen these films? If not, go, go now and see them. Some of the best films I have ever seen in my life) 2. Basket Case (I am not a 100% sure you don't have this, as it would surprise the fuck out of me if you didn't, but if you don't, buy it NOW! One of my favorite films ever.) 3. Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (it seems you like Bunuel? Well if you do, you should definitely check this bad boy out. I am just thinking about this film a lot right now, which is why I had to recommend it.)
I will comment/do you other guys later. This one took me so long.

Sealab is something I put on as background when I'm using the computer. There's something about Robert Bresson's style that I like even though his movies irritate me. As for The Exorcist Boxset, i bought it mostly because it was cheap and I wanted the original version of The Exorcist. The other Exorcist movies are indeed turds.
Eric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales is pretty good. I like Claire's Knee and La Collectionneuse the most.
I used to own the Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie on VHS, so I haven't been that motivated to buy the DVD. I probably will eventually. I actually don't own Basket Case. I own Frankenhooker, which is by the same director, but I haven't got around to purchasing Basket Case. I am going to sit down and watch all the John Cassavetes movies soon.
I really like 3 Women. It's the second best Robert Altman movie I've seen.
I admit that I hate Hollywood movies for the most part. There are few that I want to own.

Criterionmaster Best: Fanny and Alexander Stanley Kubrick Collection Hitchcock The Masterpiece Collection worst: Korn - Deuce Austin Powers in Goldmember Shallow Hal Need: Nights of Cabiria Tokyo Story The Decalogue Seven Samurai re-release The top three you picked are all fucking amazing. That Fanny and Alexander set is beyond packed. I still have a whole 'nother film to watch on it (!), that Bergman doc on the making of the film. Nothing will ever touch me so much as that film did; it does EVERYTHING a film should do. That Kubrick box set probably has the most overall quality of films EVER. Most boxsets always have a stinker in there or something, but none of the films do I give below an 8, and at least half of them are tens, with two being in my top 10! Kubrick was a master at everything; let’s just hope we get a Kubrick Early Years set, or a Criterion version of The Killing or something at least. Words cannot describe that Hitchcock set, I mean, I am still working on it. No one will ever touch what Hitchcock has done for American films. He was, and will always be, a master. And that set is a must for EVERY collection, as is the other Hitchcock boxset, Signature. Ah, my worst. I figured someone would pick some of these. I don't want it to sound like I have to defend owning these films, because, we all own what we own, it is all opinion, I will just say WHY I own them, not excuses for owning them really. I love Korn, one of the best bands I have ever seen live, they have one album that probably makes it into my top ten. I don't see why they get so much hate, well especially their early stuff. I bought that DVD used, blindly, and it was very fun, with some cool things on it. I own the whole Austin Powers series; I think they are really funny, although kinda stupid humor. I just think they capture Bond films so good. Goldmember is probably the worst of the trilogy though. Shallow Hal is a funny film, last time I watched it, a long time ago, and I needed one more movie to get a sale of buy 7 get like 4 free or something, when CD Warehouse had a huge sale. I am a huge fan of Jack Black, I mean, how could you not like him? He is hilarious, although it isn't a must for a collection, nor are some of the films I own. Huge, huge, huge Fellini fan, and an even huger Criterion fan. Both go together so well, so you should have guessed I will check that film out, especially since you and lordofdance gush about it a bunch. I would just blind buy it, but now with Netflix, I might just rent it first, we will see, but either way, I will see the film, and end up buying it (if only to have all the Fellini Criterions). Fucking kill me now, I haven't seen any Ozu films, I should kill myself. I can't stand it; I really need to see one of his films. Hopefully this huge Criterion Eclipse boxset will help me with that , but Tokyo Story has been on my must-see list since the beginning of me liking films. The reason I haven't seen it/or bought it? I think because it is so popular, and talked about; I always pass it up for something rarer or something. Like I always am like, “well, there are other things that I should get before this, that will always be there.” I really need to change my way of thinking. I have seen half of The Decalogue and the only reason I haven't bought it is because there were rumors a while back that it might get a better release someday, so I will see the films (via library), but I think I will hold off on buying them. (Let’s hope Criterion gets a hold of this bad boy). Oh yeah, by the way, I totally love what I have seen of the films. Seven Samurai, duh. I can't believe I don't have it yet, my second favorite film. I will be getting it soon hopefully. Do you have a DVDAficionado or something? I will do yours.

It's the second best Robert Altman movie I've seen. I admit that I hate Hollywood movies for the most part. There are few that I want to own. I can see that, I mean the Bresson thing. There is something anyone who knows about film can, and should, respect. It is just so simple and pure, despite me disliking how he made Balthazar, I got to admire it. I mean this almost is like how I admire low-budget independent films. They just have something about them, (really independent films I mean, no “indie” shit), that just is something to respect. I also like some of his choices, like I have said; his simple style is nice, occasionally. I just rented Bresson’s last film though, have you seen that, if so, and you wanted to, I would love to hear how it compares to his other work in the thread you started. This will be my third film from him. [The Exorcist] That is what happens to me, I get films that shouldn't really be in my collection, just because it is cheap or something. It is one of my major problems, but since they are cheap, I guess we shouldn't worry about having them, especially since the first film is definitely worthy of having. I need the original myself; all I got is the "Version You Have Never Seen" or whatever. I heard there was a doc on the other version of the DVD. Is that true? The commentary on my version was so lacking, that I wished there had been one. If there is one, have you watched it, and is it any good? SAY WHAAA? You are telling me there are two better films, at least, than My Night At Maud's?? I am really going to have to check that out. My library has both of those films, one on the non-Criterion DVD, and the other on VHS. It doesn't sound like you like it that much? Maybe you could go more into your thoughts on the films, if you want, in the Criterion thread. I would like talking about My Night At Maud's with you at least, and I know misterbalco has seen most of the films, too. You like Discreet Charm then I am guessing? Yeah, the DVD is really good. I rented it from my library a long time ago (the Criterion version) and, although it is lacking a commentary, which pisses me off, it has some great docs, one on Bunuel's career, which I should REALLY re-watch, now that I have seen like six of his films [or more], before, all I had seen was just Discreet Charm. I have been meaning to check out some of Frankenlotter's (sp?) other films; doesn't he have one called like Brain Damage? I saw the trailer for it (Easter egg on the SW DVD of Basket Case) and it looked amazing. You MUST, MUST, MUST check it out. While it is so-bad-it-is-fucking-great, it is also genuinely good in some moments, as it is an homage to the films he loved, yet never feels forced, or like it is an homage to exploitation. It is the best SW DVD I have seen, and ranks as one of my favorite films. I don't laugh that hard like… ever. I too hate Hollywood films, kinda, ones like Troy and shit like that, I am never interested in, but some films I do like. And don't you like Old Hollywood films at all? (ala Hitchcock, Wilder, etc.)

SLAPSHOT Three Best-Seven Samurai (it goes beyond rankings, second best movie I have ever seen in my life) 1. Pulp Fiction (One of the best examples of contemporary filmmaking, and possibly the reason for some of the couple good films that came out afterwards. It changed how films were made, and I just love every second of it. It will probably be in your top five after you finish it.) 2. 2001 (It goes beyond filmmaking. I didn’t notice if you had Clockwork Orange, but this is my second favorite Kubrick, and in like my top 5. Kubrick is one of the best, and this is just stunning in every sense of the word) 3. Apocalypse Now (slowly traveling into insanity has never been so beautifully filmed. This film has grown on me so much, that it goes beyond being able to fully explain what it does to me. It is just part of what film means to me basically, and it doesn’t even make my top twenty. Hah. Three Worst (this was hard for me to pick, I know we have different tastes, and you are much less a snob then me, so you have a lot of movies I dislike) 1. Boondock Saints (I can slightly forgive you, as you haven't seen Pulp Fiction yet, but this movie is the lowest form of film, seriously, it blatantly steals from Pulp Fiction, and so many other films, while at the same time using the worst film techniques on the face of the planet, including ridiculous, trying to be cool, instead of just being cool, performances, scenes, and dialogue. My most hated film ever, probably) 2. AVP (the worst of both series', and a terrible blending of everything I hate about new movies. This could have been amazing, but they lost the humor of Predator, and the horror, and general terror of the original Alien.) 3. (this was super hard, I probably missed a bunch) Million Dollar Baby (one of the worst examples of clichéd Hollywood crap possible, this isn't the worst film ever made, just one of my most hated, with my hatred fuelled by how many people think this is a genuinely good film. I mean the performances, which usually are the only good things about new Hollywood films, aren't even good; in fact, one is down-right god-awful) Three Most Needed1. Rashomon (Criterion) (If you liked Seven Samurai, you will love Rashomon. So many people rip this movie off; it is a timeless classic, which tells a super simple story, more masterfully than anyone ever could) 2. More Criterions in general (I really like that you are getting into Kurosawa and stuff, I remember before, you didn't really even watch older foreign films, but, now that you hopefully know a good amount about Criterion, you should really check out some more of the films. Have you seen 8 1/2, Band of Outsiders, 400 Blows, etc.? I named those films specifically, because they are the main films that started me, or got me into that certain director (Fellini, Godard, Truffaut), and also, I know for a fact you will dig all those films. And they will make you want to see other films by those certain directors, which will make you branch off further, maybe into neo-realism, Italian films in general, French new wave, what have you.) 3. Fanny and Alexander (TV Version; Criterion) (trust me, there is no way a person could really not like this film. it is my favorite film ever, and represents everything I love about film, and everything about film in general. You watch this film, and then you get into soo many other films. This will open your mind, and you can impress your friends with it being 6 hours long and all )

I can't believe I don't have it yet, my second favorite film. I will be getting it soon hopefully. Do you have a DVDAficionado or something? I will do yours. The reason I chose Korn is because it's probably my most hated band. Their music is so bad and their singer has the worst voice I've ever heard. IMO their music is not much different from noise. Pardon me if that offends your opinion of them, but that's how I feel. Nights of Cabiria easily makes my top 5. I'm a huge fan of Fellini as well, and in certain moods I prefer NoC over 8 1/2. Giulietta Masina's performance is one of the best I've ever seen. She's like a more expressive Chaplin. The ending of that movie is even more powerful than City Lights. Tokyo Story is utterly amazing, it's such a powerful film even though it has zero melodrama. The story is so simple but it says so much about the human condition. It just might be the best film ever made. The DVD has a great commentary track as well. I can understand the "collector" mentality in going after rare dvds. I will post my thoughts on how I buy dvds on the appropriate thread. My DVD collection is miniscule compared to you guy's since I just started not long ago. www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?cat=1&id=columbiatch

This will open your mind, and you can impress your friends with it being 6 hours long and all ) The sad thing is, I haven't even seen the ones in the top three yet. I enjoyed Boondock Saints but I can see how some would despise it. AVP, yeah, it really isn't that good. I kind of just got it because I'm a completionist. I really enjoyed Million Dollar Baby though. No it isn't perfect but I really liked it for some reason. Yeah, I'm itching to see more Kurosawa. I have been eyeing that Yojimbo/Sanjuro Set at Best Buy for $60. I may get that this weekend. I was out today and looked for the DVD's you recommended but couldn't find any of them. I'll look again when I'm at Best Buy though. You've really got me interested in seeing the ones you recommended. I'm always open to recommendations so if anyone has any that I should see, tell me!

So far I've watched Au hasard Balthazar, Mouchette, and Pickpocket. Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne will be next, probably. I'm still trying to figure out how much or how little I like Mouchette. I got the Exorcist Boxset at Best Buy for around $20, which was what some places used to charge for The Exorcist alone. I guess Exorcist 2 is worth having just because it's so legendary in its crappiness. Some people think Exorcist 3 is an underrated horror classic, but I don't understand why. I'm really behind watching out the extras on my DVDs because I'm still trying to get through the actual movies. I'll check out The Exorcist DVD when I'm home on Sunday.
I'd give Maude ***, while Claire's Knee gets a **** rating and La Collectionneuse ***1/2. Maude was a bit too talky for me. The other two are much brighter and breezier (and sexier), which appeals to me more, I suppose. I've been meaning to watch them again, so I'll try to write my thoughts on them soon. I didn't really care for Love in the Afternoon (**1/2).
Aside from Un Chien Andalou, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie was the first Buñuel movie I ever saw. It's probably one of the first international movies I saw, too, so it definitely had an influence on what I watched after it. Because I've already watched it a few times, I guess I don't feel like I have own the Criterion edition right away. The only Frank Henenlotter movie I've seen is Frankenhooker (though I did see Basket Case 2 on cable a long time ago and barely recall it). Frankenhooker has some really funny moments and is enjoyably tasteless.
I should clarify by saying that I generally hate Hollywood epics, though I have a hard time enjoying most movies that come out these days. I don't mind older movies because they aren't the same as recent releases. Pretty much anything before the 80s is more acceptable.
