I can also see what you mean about the typical action movie affair. Perhaps it was perfect timing: it looked cool, it does have depth, but it looks cool, it had some cool sounding lines (I guess), and things about it were cooooool.
I think I can understand how the sequels turned out the way they did. I don't remember how long the brothers spent working on the first one, but they probably were able to have enough time to include concepts and effects that made it worth watching. Second one came around, they didn't really try as hard as they could have, and the end result showed. The third? LET'S GET THIS RELEASED IN THE SAME YEAR TO MAKE MASSIVE MONEYS! Yeah, that idea didn't pan out.
Looks like I was able to convince myself to remove the Matrix from my Top 20, especially since I didn't have the heart to keep Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance - which helped me realize that revenge (and even anger, to a slight degree) were just not worthwhile, a problem I'd dealt with for many years - in my Top 20. It's very close, though.

I know how much you love I Heart Huckabees , I was wondering if you saw this video traveling the net, with the director of the film having a "meltdown"? I can't watch it yet, but I will later tonight. I hear it is good, so I thought I would share it with the film's number one fan. kenlevine.blogspot.com/2007/03/great-director-meltdown.html

Oh man. That is brilliant, and there are few things in the world that are actually brilliant. Especially when Russell is like "ACT LIKE A FUCKING GROWNUP, YOU FUCKING BITCH, YOU FUCKING BITCH!" Thanks. Although, I must admit that this is still more Russell than I can take for a while, regardless of whether he looks like a dumbfuck or not. (And if he's faking it, in order to get a reaction out of the actors/actresses, he has the whole creative process down wrong.) edit: Here's something that's even better yet. Now might be a good time to update my list. It's not quite 100, because I could name you a couple movies I'd want to put on this list but have to finish first, but I arranged it this way to really see if there were any oddballs. There are a couple I might move out sometime, but it works for the moment. Oh, and it's in alphabetical order. 1001 Nights (Smith, Amano) 12 Angry Men (1957; 1997) 7th Street A Talking Picture Aachi and Ssipak Adventures of Prince Achmed, The Akira Alive In Joburg; Tempbot American Beauty Beijing Bicycle
Being John Malkovich Beyond (from the Animatrix) Big Lebowski, The Blues Brothers, The Brick Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey with the Game of Death Bus 174 Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid City of God Coffee and Cigarettes
Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door Culture Jam: Hijacking Commercial Culture Dawn of the Dead Day of the Dead Dead Leaves Dead Man Dirty Harry Dreams (Akira Kurosawa's) El Topo Elephant Man, The
Enter the Dragon Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Eureka Fargo Fight Club Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within Fountain, The Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai Ghost World
Grave of the Fireflies Grindhouse Harakiri Harold and Maude Howl's Moving Castle Ikiru - ? Illusionist, The Jaws Joint Security Area Kalifornia
Kiss of the Dragon La Haine La Jetée Le Samouraï Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels Long Goodbye, The Lost in Translation - ? Maltese Falcon, The - ? Man Bites Dog Matrix 1, The
Memento MIND GAME More (Mark Osborne) My Beautiful Girl, Mari My Neighbor Totoro Night of the Living Dead Noiseman Sound Insect On Your Mark (Miyazaki music video) One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Ong-bak
Pierrot le Fou Princess Mononoke Psycho (1960) Qutting Raging Bull Requiem for a Dream Reservoir Dogs Roundhay Garden Scene; Traffic Crossing Leeds Bridge Seven Samurai, The Seventh Seal, The
Shaun of the Dead Sin City Spirited Away Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope Super Size Me; Hamburger America Sword of Doom Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance Taste of Cherry Taxi Driver Tokyo Godfathers
Traffic Triplets of Belleville Tron Twilight Samurai, The Usual Suspects, The Vanishing Point Versus Waking Life Wals voor de Storm Wild Zero
Yi Yi - ? Yojimbo 3 4 5
edit: The question marks mean that I'm not 100% sure whether I want them on my list or not. Sure, they are pretty decent movies, but you know, I'm more concerned about how I feel about them rather than how you or Ebert feels about them.
Also, I need to get this mother up to 105 to do a proper Top 100 because of the Studio Ghibli slot. Stuff like Roundhay Garden Scene; Traffic Crossing Leeds Bridge can work on the same slot without anyone getting too upset over that. More of a focus toward modern movies, but that's just kind of the way things go. It's just easier to see a movie made recently than it is to see a movie from the thirties, or even the seventies.

(And if he's faking it, in order to get a reaction out of the actors/actresses, he has the whole creative process down wrong.) edit: Here's something that's even better yet. Clooney: "I Didn't Leak 'Huckabees' Footage" George Clooney has issued a $1 million challenge to anyone who can prove he's behind the leak of internet outtakes of I Heart Huckabees. The footage, featuring actress Lily Tomlin and director Davd O. Russell screaming at one another, hit cyberspace late last week, and Clooney, who famously fell out with the moviemaker when they made Three Kings together, has been linked to the leak. But, in a statement released yesterday, the movie star wrote: "Contrary to popular opinion, neither the sound man, Ed Tise, nor yours truly sent in the David O. Russell tape. I saw it (footage) when we were working on Ocean's Twelve, and there have been quite a few copies traveling around town for the last couple of years. Any rumor that either of us put it on the internet is simply false." And Clooney is so keen to prove his innocence he's offering a huge reward if anyone can prove he was behind the leak. He adds, "(I will) offer a million bucks to anyone who would prove otherwise."

Some comments made it sound like the footage was leaked a while ago, but oh well. I don't think Clooney will have to cash out on this, because no one really cares. Did you see this video remix of the video? It's also pretty funny. I added Shaun of the Dead to my alphabetical list, and will probably add the Twilight Samurai once I finish it, and I'm predicting Kill! will make an appearance on my Top 100. As for the list proper, I'm planning on restructuring it, so there are various drafts of it here and there.

I am not quite sure when it was leaked, I think I first heard about it like 2 weeks ago, but it could have been leaked way longer than that, I don't know. You doing all this reconstructing of your list is making me feel the need to as well, I have watched like 10 movies that are definitely going somewhere on the list, but I don't know where yet.

Here's how my Top 25 looks right now. Still in the works and #4 should include the following - Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies, Howl's Moving Castle, On Your Mark - but I excluded them to make the list a little more streamlined: (01) Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door (Watanabe, 2001) {3.5 viewings} (02) Beyond from the Animatrix (Morimoto, 2003) {∞, or, countless viewings} (03) The Seven Samurai (Kurosawa, 1954) {1} (04) Princess Mononoke {1} (the Studio Ghibli slot) (05) Enter the Dragon (Clouse, 1973) {1} (06) American Beauty (Mendes, 1999) {1} (07) 7th Street (Pais, 2003) {3} (08) (Empty) (09) The Fountain (Aronofsky, 2006) {1} (10) Grindhouse (Rodriguez, Tarantino, 2007} {2} (11) Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Hill, 1969) {2} (12) The Big Lebowski (Coen, 1998) {2} (13) Fight Club (Fincher, 1999) {2.5} (14) My Beautiful Girl, Mari (Lee, 2002) {1} (15) Dawn of the Dead (Romero, 1978) {2.5} (16) Harakiri (Kobayashi, 1962) {1} (17) Pierrot le Fou (Godard, 1965) {1} (18) (Empty) (19) Waking Life (Linklater, 2001) {1} (20) Akira (Otomo, 1988) {1.5} (21) 1001 Nights (Smith, Amano, 1998) {1} (22) Noiseman Sound Insect (Morimoto, 1997) {∞} (23) Jaws (Spielberg, 1975) {2} (24) Fargo (Coen, 1996) {2} (25) Aachi and Ssipak (Jo, 2006) {1} I'll go down the list for stability: 1-stable, 2-stable, 3-needs a rewatch, 4-stable enough, 5-fine where it is, 6-definitely needs a rewatch, 7-stable, 9-unstable because it definitely needs a rewatch, 10-stable enough for the moment (surprising, but it works). 11-stable enough, 12-stable enough, 13-might change, 14-might change with rewatch, 15-I've accepted its flaws because I've seen it close to three times in less than four months, 16-needs a rewatch but also #3 and #4 are also samurai movies so it's not my favorite samurai movie..., 17-unstable and in need of a rewatch, 19-definite need of a rewatch but it could break the Top 10 if things go well, 20-stablized here. 21-might go up, 22-maybe the same, 23-seems right to me, 24-maybe the same, 25-fittingly, it followings things up from behind. edit: My tentative Top 100 has been updated. Just needed to save a copy online, I suppose, and I guess I'm slightly interested in what some people think of the lists.

What is your number 14, I don't think I have ever heard of it? Animated? Damn that number 18 spot, you need to fill that bad boy in.

Think of My Beautiful Girl, Mari as South Korea's answer to Studio Ghibli. Here are two articles to inform you of what the movie is about: text review and text and image review. In related news, South Korea might just soon turn into an animation force of its own, rather than just being a place for America and Japan to outsource their animators. Oh, and here's a slightly updated Top 25. I moved Waking Life up, the Fountain down a bit until I rewatch it (accidentally filling #18), and I decided that, you know what, I don't loooove Fight Club all that much. (01) Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door (Watanabe, 2001) {3.5 viewings} (02) Beyond from the Animatrix (Morimoto, 2003) {∞, or, countless viewings} (03) The Seven Samurai (Kurosawa, 1954) {1} (04) Princess Mononoke {1} (the Studio Ghibli slot) (05) Enter the Dragon (Clouse, 1973) {1} (06) American Beauty (Mendes, 1999) {1} (07) 7th Street (Pais, 2003) {3} (08) Waking Life (Linklater, 2001) {1} (09) (Empty)(10) Grindhouse (Rodriguez, Tarantino, 2007} {2} (11) Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Hill, 1969) {2} (12) The Big Lebowski (Coen, 1998) {2} (13) (Empty)(14) My Beautiful Girl, Mari (Lee, 2002) {1} (15) Dawn of the Dead (Romero, 1978) {2.5} (16) Harakiri (Kobayashi, 1962) {1} (17) Pierrot le Fou (Godard, 1965) {1} (18) The Fountain (Aronofsky, 2006) {1} (19) (Empty)(20) Akira (Otomo, 1988) {1.5} (21) 1001 Nights (Smith, Amano, 1998) {1} (22) Noiseman Sound Insect (Morimoto, 1997) {∞} (23) Jaws (Spielberg, 1975) {2} (24) Fargo (Coen, 1996) {2} (25) Aachi and Ssipak (Jo, 2006) {1} What do you think?

www.janusfilms.com/pierrot/dates.htmlholy hell dude: "This summer, Janus Films presents Jean-Luc Godard's seminal New Wave classic Pierrot le fou in a brand-new 35 mm print. After its successful run at New York's Brooklyn Academy of Music, Godard's film-which J. Hoberman calls "the epitome of New Wave Pop Art romanticism"-will tour cities across the country throughout the summer and into September. Click here for its theatrical play dates." it is playing near you, too. you lucky bastard. you should try and hit that up. i love this quote too: "I saw Pierrot le fou by chance ... I decided to make movies the same night." - Chantal Akerman

Oops. I kind of forgot to mention that I saw that at YMDB2 a while ago. nonfiction may be driving down to Seattle, which would be awesome.
Oh yeah, and I'm working on expanding my list to a Top 30.
