1. Now you're really grabbing at straws. So what if I'm a guest? Does that in anyway way affect the validity of my points? 2. The policy in all forms of music should be towards constant innovation, something that neither KoRn nor RATM have been at the forefront of, but still KoRn more. Part of the brilliance of KoRn is that they had the nerve to bring in this big range of vocal styles in 1994 when cookie monster was universally looked down on and rap was rap. We should embrace new styles unless they are really really rubbish, that should be a general policy in music. 3. Ok well granted I haven't seen the live shows of either, and if I say KoRn have a greater level of intensity this debate will be turned into petty "yes-it-is" "no-it-isn't" squabbles. 4. Yes, but the key issue is not simply the size of the giant. So RATM and KoRn are both metal heavyweights - isn't that essentially a given by this stage? We have to find some way to differentiate between these giants now. 5. If you something is "part" of metal, then by that logic any brand of music must subscribe to each individual characteristic of that music in order to be considered part of that genre. Just as an example, AFI are (or were) considered a punk band, even though they did not feature many anarchic or anti-establishment lyrics in their songs. Innovation is the key. 6. I only got into RATM well after they broke up, so I wouldn't really know. Though after recently investigating it a little further, some members of the band or their agents or whatever (the article wasn't too clear) said that the April concert will probably be a one-off and then the world will return to the calm normality of Audioslave. 7. That's kind of the point, it does in KoRn's case which is one of the reasons they stand out from lots of other nu metal bands out there. I mean none of us is about to say Fred Durst's vocal intensity make up for the rubbish lyrics, or vice versa. 8. For feck's sake, and you only yesterday giving out to me for allegedly "biased" discussion of these bands! Honestly if you are aware of your own faults and how these faults are going to become visible in any kind of serious debate, don't accuse someone else of having them (especially when they DON'T suffer from those faults, as I have already explained). 9. I will admit that RATM have had a huge impact on metal music and on fans of it around the world, in particular because of Morello. But that's getting back to a central topic in all form of artistic discussion - popularity versus quality. Of COURSE RATM are more popular than KoRn, but that shouldn't be used as evidence in a court of aesthetic quality. As the issue by this stage is largely unarguable, I will simply make the point that KoRn with one album defined an entire sub-genre of metal music, something which RATM can not honestly claim to accomplishing. If anything I believe RATM may have been indirectly inspired by KoRn with the blend of rap and metal which is so evident in both bands. Thank you for your time. It doesn't effect the validity of your posts, but it would maybe help me contact you personally rather than fighting you on the public message board. The problem here is that KoRn were innovators in a bad way, inspiring the tepid and mind numbing genre that is known as nu-metal. RATM on the other hand inspired bands to take a stand politically and the influence of Morello's guitar techniques cannot be underestimated. The problem with cookie monster vocals and rap-rock vocal styling is that I feel that they are truly garbage (for the most part anyway). I will never embrace them. KoRn may have inspired a whole genre of music with one album, and I agree that RATM does not have a single album that does this. That does not change the fact that the genre they created is completely awful. Nu-metal has very few bands of any artistical merit. While KoRn may have some merit, if only because they started the genre, name more than 2 or 3 bands of nu-metal that have any skill musically or lyrically. I sure can't. This isn't a direct knock on the band and it may even show that they have more talent than most other bands of there genre. But overall, nu-metal is a much deplored genre, and KoRn are the creators of it.

Cornell Quits AudioslaveThis just opens the door back up for a full RATM reunion, maybe with a new album and tour and everything. Just have to wait and see. If I were Chris I would be pissed too. The members of my band doing a reunion date, and kinda leaving me in the dust. He has every right to be acrimonious.

Eh, Audioslave is no big loss. They have some good moments, but they were nothing compared to Rage or Soundgarden. Was Cornell's first solo album good, does anyone know?

The management is swearing that they will only play four dates, but didn't they say JUST ONE DATE earlier? I think that once they get back on stage together, they will want to tour and record again.

EDIT: Tom Morello solo album...
I love the reason they are coming back, "the reunion is driven in part by politics and a desire by him and his compatriots to rally young people against President Bush, the war in Iraq and the Republican Party."

Yea, the Nightwatchman, look it up. Its some pretty awesome stuff, and all acoustic too.
I knew that they couldn't resist coming back together with all the shit that our much hated leader is doing in today's world. I hope we at least get one new song absolutely slamming Bush.

The Nightwatchman's stuff with Axis of Justice is pretty sweet. Here's Until the End.

I've only listened to the first two songs of it so far, but it seems good. If you like Tom Morello's stuff under the Nightwatchman, particularly his songs from the Axis of Justice live CD, then you'll probably like this CD because it sounds about the same. If I remember, I'll post my thoughts on the entire album, but it's looking good so far.

If you liked his stuff on the Axis of Justice live CD, then you'll like the entire album. Nothing really stands out to me for the album as a whole, but when I heard Union Song and Until the End, I was pleased. Good studio transition.
I might give the album an 8/10.
You'd probably give it more, but there just isn't enough diversity. Sure, it's good music and there are a couple new things thrown in here and there, and it's kind of the point with a solo musician and all, but it just doesn't stand out to me any more than just listening to Until the End thirteen times.

I've heard its very Springsteen-ish circa Nebraska and Ghost of Tom Joad. Which is awesome for me, since that may be my favorite Bruce period (well, one of them at least). I have also heard that you have to be really into Morello/RATM to enjoy the record. Are either of these rumors true?

I haven't listened to much Springsteen, so I can't say for sure about that, and I don't think you really have to be a fan of Morello or RATM to enjoy the Nightwatchman. I could make a quip about how you have to enjoy good music to enjoy the Nightwatchman, but I won't. Basically, listen to this song: Until the End. If you like it, you'll like the album, because that sound is the basis for the entire album. Also, he plays a good harmonica occasionally. The version I heard had no crazy metal guitar solos or guest vocals by Maynard James Keenan that I could tell, although it wasn't completely solo in that I heard some background vocalists, so there wasn't much to differentiate one song from another. I can appreciate the flow of an album, but I also like the idea of each song having something distinct that you can obviously tell that you're on Track 5 and not Track 7. In this case, maybe too good of a flow?, but the album just seemed to consist of songs with different subjects and a sometimes more angry than usual Morello. Not that it's a bad thing that he stuck to the same style throughout, it's good to play it safe and strong on a first release, but there were only like four songs that honestly stood out to me: the two from Axis of Justice, the title track (because he's pissed ) and the bagpipes/guitar or bagpipe sounding guitars on the Road I Must Travel. If he was able to coax a guitar to sound like a bagpipe, then holy shit... ;D Anyways, the rest of the songs were good, and I couldn't remember a lagging point at all, but I just would have liked more stand-out songs I guess. Also, try to listen to some of the songs on YouTube. There should be a couple, and that should give you a better idea of what you're in for.

Rage Against The Machine Reunited At Coachella From ultimate-guitar.com
Rage Against The Machine's first show in almost seven years brought Coachella to a stunning close Sunday night (April 29), according to NME.com report.
Under a simple red star backdrop, the staunchly political quartet treated the biggest crowd of the weekend to an explosive set that spanned the whole of the band's career.
Communication with the audience was was kept to a bare minimum, with Zach de la Rocha kick-starting the comeback with a simple introduction: "Good evening, we're Rage Against The Machine from Los Angeles, California."
The anticipated anti-Bush tirade finally came during the last song of the main set, "Wake Up". "Our current administration needs to be tried, hung and shot," the singer boldly stated, according to MTV.com. "We need to treat them like the war criminals they are."
Rage Against The Machine setlist:
01. Testify 02. Bulls On Parade 03. People Of The Sun 04. Bombtrack 05. Bullet In The Head 06. Down Rodeo 07. Guerrilla Radio 08. Renegades Of Funk (Afrika Bambaataa cover) 09. Calm Like A Bomb 10. Sleep Now In The Fire 11. Wake Up 12. Freedom 13. Killing In The Name
Sounds like the band wanted to let their music do the talking for the most part.

Tom Morello: 'No Plans' For New Rage Against The Machine Album From blabbermouth.net by way of ultimate-guitar.com
What's next for Rage Against The Machine? The band closed the Coachella Festival on Sunday night (April 29) with its first show in seven years (video), and has four more dates scheduled this summer on the Rock The Bells tour. But while guitarist Tom Morello told Launch Radio Networks that more touring is a possibility, don't hold your breath for a new Rage album.
"There are no plans to do that," he said. "That's a whole other ball of wax right there. Writing and recording albums is a whole different thing than getting back on the bike (laughs), you know, and playing these songs. But I think that the one thing about the Rage catalog is that to me none of it feels dated. You know, it doesn't feel at all like a nostalgia show. It feels like these are songs that were born and bred to be played now."
Following the 20-minute sell-out of the July 28 Rock The Bells show at Randalls Island in New York City, a second New York date has been added on July 29th. Rage will again appear, along with the Wu-Tang Clan, Cypress Hill and others. Rage is also playing Rock The Bells dates in San Bernardino, California on August 11 and San Francisco on August 18.
Tickets for the July 29 Rock The Bells show go on sale Friday, May 4 at 10:00 a.m. via Ticketmaster.
Morello will also be touring this spring and summer as his political folk alter ego, The Nightwatchman. His debut album, "One Man Revolution", arrived in stores last Tuesday (April 24).
No new record, but more touring possible. This is a good sign.

Starting with "Testify" and ending with "Killing in the Name." I am surprised no one was reported dead after that show. I would have loved to have been there, hopefully they will make a full tour, with them headlining. As much as I would love a new album, I think seeing them live would be the best thing, and I would definitely take that, over a new album. (Although both would be great) Question, beed, or whoever else, new Rage album, or chance to see them live?

Rock and roll legend Ted Nugent — who has become both popular and criticized for his support for hunting and conservative political views — and conservative commentator Ann Coulter appeared on the "Hannity & Colmes" program on FOX News on Wednesday (May 2) to discuss RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE singer Zack de la Rocha's onstage proclamation at this past weekend's Coachella festival that the "current administration . . . should be hung and tried and shot." Zack then reportedly added, "We need to treat them like the war criminals they are."
"We've disagreed with a lot of administrations in the past, but none of our rhetoric included threatening lives," Nugent said during his appearance on the program. "These guys [RAGE] are over the top, but they're the lunatic fringe that even your average democrat and liberal doesn't agree with. But unfortunately, nobody is silencing these guys — or not necessarily silencing, but condemning this outrageous violence that they're recommending."

Relax Ted, RATM have always been extreme...
