If there are any of you that are pretty bored, go here. It proves to people from other countries that all our music isn't in Zulu! I suggest: VOL Wickhead Spoonfeedas Evolver Airship Orange Drivelane Goose Gap Marlowe (fantastic!) Misericord Not My Dog Velve The Parlotones The Narrow Fevertree Many would suggest Prime Circle, I wouldn't. One you absolutely can't miss out on: The Diesel WhoresTo hear what our accents really sound like: High SocietyTo hear what South Africans trying to sound American sound like: TweakBands that perform in my mother tongue (Afrikaans): KopFokofpolisiekar (translated to Fuck Off, Police Car.)<--- my favourite band. Try to have an open mind and look around for yourself, our music industry is still developing... If you do go to the trouble of looking at a few songs, let me know. Thanks

Are they South African?
One thing I can boast about: Seether is! (I don't like them, but they're just so well-known, I had to say it)

Dave was born in South Africa. Moved to America when he was young though. So he is technically a South African.

Yay! Another point for us! Have you been on the site yet? We have some mindblowing music, I must admit.

Please do, I can't stand that it's all just lying around there, and most of South Africa are bopping to Simple Plan and calling themselves hardcore.

I defined World music a little while ago, and according to those definitions, the Dave Matthews Band doesn't count as South African music because I doubt they have much South African influence. They seem more like American pop heroes to me. Although that definition would probably exclude most South African music as being South African music, so there's room for debate. Seether is a decent child band of Nirvana and Tool at best. I like this Seether more. edit: Oh yeah, thanks for the recommendations / link. I'll try to listen to a few when I get the chance.

I can't argue, I'm pretty lost. I can say - tons od South African music sounds American, a lot of it doesn't. Some of it's good, some not so much. I don't like Seether that much.

I'm more interested in the non-American sounding South African music, myself. Otherwise, it's just more of the same.

American pop heroes, ooo that pisses me off. They have so much more to their sound than pop music. They are influenced more by world music and jazz than by any pop record ever made. Have you seriously heard anything from before Everyday? If you think that sounds like pop, than you have no ears.
Carter Beauford has tons of African musical influence. He is nearly tribal on some DMB songs.

I haven't heard anything from Everyday, and I haven't heard much of DMB in general, but most of what I have heard is probably just the soft pop music that isn't challenging to radio listeners.

I'm more interested in the non-American sounding South African music, myself. Otherwise, it's just more of the same. But you have to remember that South Africa's strongest outside influence is America. A lot of the music is stunning, and unlike anything you've ever heard. More of it isn't. It's like that with South African people, a lot of us resist Americanization but most of our people embrace it. They're obsessed. If you want something really different, listen to the Afrikaans music! It won't have the desired effect, though, because the magic lies in understanding and understanding the lyrics. Well... Have a look and decide for yourself. EDIT: The reason I don't endorse Black African music, what some people from other countries define as South African music, and the only kind at that, is because to us, it's just worn out. It's lost it's effect, it's irritating. If you'd like to listen to some though, there's Hip Hop Pantsula (on that page). Kallitz is pretty good also, but it's in Afrikaans. If you don't understand Afrikaans it sounds like bullshit.
