3rd viewing, still the most brutal killings i've ever seen. Imamura was making strictly documentaries for 10 years before he returned to the cinema to adapt this book based on true events. This experience helps the film feel and look very real imo and makes the murders that much more powerful. Sex and Violence are great and make wonderful cinematic situations, but when its dumbed down and stylized like in shit made today it takes away the feeling of authenticity. VoM feels distant, like your following this guy from a few cars back and watching from there until he starts to murder. Then you get the closer shots and the feeling that your right there watching a serial killer at work. Seven is the 1st other serial killer film that pops in my head, and although that film is far more detailed in its gruesomeness, VoM makes me feel worse afterwards, which is good imo.

That is awesome, I will wait for the Criterion release of the film before I rent it, then we will see what I think. If I love it, then I will probably get the MoC version, since the features seem great. It is a film that has been interesting me a while, ever since I saw the MoC cover actually. So I am glad you like it so much, I didn’t know much about the film before.

I'd say go with the MoC, since its got a beautiful transfer (seamed too grainy at times, but I think that was to make it look more like a doc.), Tony Rayns Commentary, and a baller ass booklet make it well worth the $20 (thats what I paid) from cdwow.com.
I saw this at the rental shop on VHS with a sticker from the 80's? that said "From the Criterion Collection Laser Disc transfer" or something like that, so I immediately rented it and couldn't believe how great it was. Once I heard of MoC and saw they released it I knew it was a must-own. Sounds like either Criterion or Eclipse will be releasing more of his films, which is fabolous news.

Sounds like either Criterion or Eclipse will be releasing more of his films, which is fabolous news. That's great news! I saw Vengeance Is Mine, Ballad of Narayama and The Eel at a screening a couple of months ago, and they were all stunning! I liked Ballad of Narayama the most, but ViM and The Eel is definitive two beautiful pieces of art too. Can't wait to see what more Imamura has to offer

After Tim Drum, I never want to see another Eel again! But after reading the imdb summary, I might have to endure.
I heard it would be his masterpieces like 'Black Rain', 'The Insect Woman' and 'Pigs and Battleships'.

The Pornographers has interested me for a while now, I have it on my queue. I have yet to get into him though, but he certainly sounds like a great director. I will look into more of his films. That is so sad of his recent death also. I am guessing most of his films aren't on DVD though (?), I will have to look.

Most aren't in R1 land i believe. I got 'The Pornographers' and didn't enjoy the 1st half so much, so after about an hour I shut it off. This was forever ago, so i'll have to give it another go prett quick. Looks like he made a movie in 03, so he was an active filmmaker into his much later years.

He did a segment in that 9/11 film I believe, and had a movie in 2001. I have heard mixed reviews on Pornographers myself, but do want to see it. You will have to tell us your thoughts when you watch.

I had those Chicken Fries, they are really good, but compared to chicken fingers/nuggets they suck (imo). I would much rather spend less, to get nuggets, then spend all that for those thin ass fries. They do taste damn good though, but they taste the same as BK's nuggets.

I was drunk so money wasn't an issue. I think I spent close to $20 on me and a friend on food at BK. He lives in the hood in Madison so we just walked over there and ate like kings. I was mackin the shit out of the hoodrat who was working there, but she was pretty young so i left it at just spittin game.
