I don't know if you will like that as Bunuel's style is very present in it. And if you don't like the style to Viridiana than you probably won't like the style of Discreet Charm.

After being basically banned from making films in his hometown he was allowed back. When Bunuel was brought back to make a film he chose one that was sure to get people to flip out. The film follows a woman, Viridiana, a few days before she is about to become a full-fledged nun. She receives a letter from her uncle and is forced by one of the nuns to go and see him as he only has little time to live, even though she was never close with her uncle and doesn’t want to go, she does. She meets up with him and after just one night she already wants to leave, her uncle asks her to marry him in order to get her to stay. She says no and that she is leaving tomorrow; he then comes up with the idea to slip a pill into her drink. While passed out the uncle goes in and starts caressing her. Looking to make love to his own niece! As you can see by the plot the film was bound to turns some heads. I mean the film deals with incest right out in the open. It gets even crazier when she decides not to become a nun just yet and opens up a home for poor people. The performances by Rey and Pinal are both fantastic. I love how Buñuel mixes humor into his films throughout drama, it is a good balance. I absolutely loved how Buñuel framed the ‘Last Supper’ scene, where everyone is told to “freeze” and they freeze to look like Da Vinci’s Last Supper. The final scene when Bunuel hints at the possibility of a threesome is amazing, in fact he originally had a different ending but it was deemed to dirty and he had to change it. The original had Viridiana going into her cousin’s bedroom, but Bunuel much preferred the new ending anyway. With that “popular music” playing in the background as the film ends it just adds a tone to the film, it is like Bunuel flipping everything around, after what we just witnessed he throws in this song that is totally out of place but totally works. I really want to see more of Buñuel’s Mexican films (Besides the two I have seen already). This was just a classic work from one of the greatest directors to ever live. This one is definitely worth watching. -------------------------------------------- And to reply to CoB I now know this is very different than his French films, just like Andruini said.
