Pandora's Box (someone over at Kino said that Criterion will release it this year, it had been a rumored release for years, but a new restored print was finally created and screened this year) Overlord (many sources on this one... it's a brittish film about Operation Overlord, aka D-Day) El Topo and Holy Mountain (these two have been rumored for a while. It has been confirmed by several sources and there is the possibility of a Jodorowsky set with Fando and Lis and Santa Sangre...) The Double Life of Veronique (someone asked Criterion if they were working on the Dekalogue and he got a note back saying that they were working on this one) Army of Shadows (Jean-Pierre Melville's film that was never, until recently, released in this country. it is distributed by Rialto, so it's pretty certain) The Fallen Idol (recently re-released via Rialto, this film may be be one of two new Carol Reed films to the collection, the other being Odd Man Out. They will probably be anounced when the re-release of The Third Man is.) Alain Resnais Box (someone here said they knew someone at Criterion and he was told they were working on a Resnais box) several Rossellini films (Isabella Rossellini said that she worked with Criterion on several of her fathers films... seeming as his 100th birthday would be this year, it's possible by the years end) Border Radio (Allison Anders' debut film was mentioned in the news section on Criterion, making it a likely release) Woman in the Dunes (a retrospective of Teshigahara's films was mentioned in the news section of Criterions website... and this is his most famous film) Clean, Shaven (this one was mentioned in a magazine article as being a future Criterion release) A Time for Drunken Horses (someone contacted Bahman Ghobadi's website and they said that Criterion had bought the rights to this film) Princess of the Moon (A japanese monster website said that Criterion picked up the distribution rights to this... maybe for Eclipse?) Ivan's Childhood (with recent restoration work done on this picture, it is highly likely as they own the rights... Nostalghia is a probability too, as the rights once belonged to Fox Lorber and Criterion has picked up many of those titles) Samuel Fuller's early films (the company who owns the rights to these posted that Criterion was going to release them on their website) God's Country (mentioned in an article as a definite Criterion release) Phantom India (was part of a Malle film retrospective, the website for which said Criterion were preparing the film for DVD) Black Moon (recently screened on Flix with a Janus logo. Criterion is the official DVD distributor of Janus films) Death of a Cyclist (shown as part of a Janus Films anniversary) symbiopsychotaxiplasm: take one (The trailer of the theatrical re-release features the Janus logo) Several films by Jacque Tati ( Parade, Trafic, Jour de Fete, some shorts, others(?). All potentially part of a Tati boxset announced in a Criterion newsletter) Hitchcock Silent Films (Most are public domain, and Criterion have expressed interest in adding more Hitchcock to the collection after losing the rights to Notorious, Rebecca, and Spellbound) Fantastic Mr. Fox (Wes Anderson obviously prefers to have his films brought to DVD via Criterion, and will likely push to make sure this film makes it to Criterion as well) La Notte (Criterion producers have said in interviews that they intend to add this film to the collection and thus complete Antonioni's Malaise Trilogy) Sans Soleil (New Yorker confirm that Criterion are preparing this film for DVD) Before the Revolution (in an interview to mark the release of La Commare Secca on DVD, Bertolucci mentioned that he and Criterion had begun work on restoring Before the Revolution) W.R.: Mysteries of the Organism and Sweet Movie (Director Dusan Makavejev has said at public appearances that these films are coming to Criterion) She's Gotta Have it (Director Spike Lee has said that he has been working to get the rights to the film in Criterion's hands. Gray's Anatomy (Believed to have been licensed as part of a big deal with Wellspring some time ago.) [This same deal brought us Schizopolis, The Rohmer box set, the Truffaut boxset, and RAN among other titles, BTW] Roger Ebert's newest Great Movies Essay covers the film Cabiria and at the end he notes that Criterion are preparing a DVD of the film. ^Got all this from other sources.

Oh, yes! I'm rooting for Army of Shadows, Hitchcock Silent Films, Alain Resnais Box and La Notte! It's shall be very ineresting to see The Double Life of Veronique's criterion deal, but I'm not sure if they'll top the Artificial Eye R2 dvd. That one was nearly perfect!

Jodorowsky on Criterion
"Rouleau and DuChaine began butting heads with ABKCO records and Criterion for several moths in order to obtain the print of the film and screen it here. After gaining the approval of Jodorowsky himself, the two acquired the film and secured the screen at the Union Theater for one night.
“Before we received the print, the film had shown in Argentina, France and Sweden,” says DuChaine. “Criterion, who now owns the distribution rights to the film, didn’t want to send it back to the Midwest, so again we had to contact Jodorowsky himself. After showing him how enthusiastic we were about wanting to show the film, he gave us the thumbs up and got the film sent to us.”
In 2007 The Criterion Collection will be releasing the film on DVD."

Clean, Shaven is at Amazon for $21. I did get an email from them telling me about it, but it looks like a really fascinating movie.

At least they're starting to put (more) extras in the Criterion Collection releases. That's good.

I am amazed at that comment, maybe you have been looking at their more obscure titles but I feel they have TONS of extras. They often have multiple disc box sets for just one film. And plus it's better to have features that add to the experience of the film, then to just be features for the sake of features. Love Criterion's choice of extras on things. Can you explain your reasoning behind the statement more? Why do you think they have few extras?

Yeah, sure, why not.
I do not count clean-ups, trailers, web links or other things like that. I don't count paper extras either because most of them don't appear along with the DVD when I borrow them.
Also, More! is not an extra.
My examples: The Seven Samurai (one discer), Yojimbo, Sanjuro, the Seventh Seal (a little clean-up thing), Kwaidan, Shock Corridor (of course), the three Seijun Suzuki's movies I've had experience with only had an interview so I'll just put them all in like this, and I'll just stop here.
Most are earlier releases, yes, but if they're older, they shouldn't be bare-bones at $30. And, yes, they've been getting better about the extras, but I've had plenty of experience with them where the extras amount to about one interview or one extra. I just can't get behind that!

Well for some reason or another, the prices are all different. I know the Suzuki films are cheaper but Seventh Seal is more. (Plus if I remember correctly Seventh Seal had a commentary and a nice little filmography-type thing with commentary on video clips that accompany it). The price depends on different things, like how much it cost to license the film and stuff. They are also re-releasing most of these so you have those to look forward to.
It’s just maybe they couldn't afford, at the time, more extras for the more obscure releases. Who knows?
Anyways there are rumors about the following releases:
Mouchette 49th Parallel Immortal Story Max Ophuls box set Exterminating Angel Jean Grémillon box set and another Nakagawa film

Last I checked, the Suzuki movies are in the $30 price range. I didn't quite get mine for 90% off, but it was something like it.
Le Samourai was actually pretty cheap at around $22, last I checked.
And as I stated, I didn't include commentaries. I don't listen to them enough. I didn't check out the extras in too much depth for the Seventh Seal, I just remember there not being a whole lot of them.

I consider the ommentary to be a large extra. Although the best extras come on disks such as the tokyo story release. Whcih has the 2 hour documentary about Ozu. Also the wild strawberries release has a lengthy film on Bergman. Then Jules et Jim has a wealth of other good features.

My main qualm with commentaries are this:
Okay, two hours to watch a movie. I'm fine with that. But sitting around for two hours as some directors tell me what happens in the movie? I just don't have the time for that.

Some commentaries are good, some are not. For example, I was bored to death by the Eternal Sunshine commentary (mostly because I had trouble decyphering Michel Gondry's thick accent) but Pi (Darren Aronofsky) and Sideways (Thomas Haden Church and Paul Giamatti) were excellent. You get what you're given, I suppose.

I love commentaries because it gives me a chance to re-watch the movies from a different perspective. It can get me to appreciate a film more by knowing some of the stories behind the film. There are tons of great ones, but also, like AK said, tons of bad ones. It is hit or miss really.
Normally I can't stand edited together tracks, I like when the people are all in the same room together. But the Halloween edited together track is amazing so you never know.

The Russian Ark commentary I listened to was good, if only because I focused more on the technical details than the movie itself. But, you're right, that is a good way of looking at it. A different perspective. Definitely. I've been thinking about listening to a few commentaries for my more favorite movies. Hopefully it won't end in a burning disaster of fire and destruction.

From CForum:
"I received an email from a godard newsgroup list that Criterion has bought the rights to A bout de souffle from fox lorber. So there should be a criterion edition scheduled sometime Q4 2007. The fox lorber deal may have included Le Petit Soldat and Les Carabiniers as well but I don't see either of those getting special edition treatment. Pierrot Le Fou has been an old rumored criterion as well maybe it's now on the schedule?
Rialto pictures is currently showing a new 35mm print of 2 or 3 Things I know about her at the new york filmforum. I'd love to see this one get the full-fledged deluxe transfer and extras rteatment by criterion in the not too distant future."

Criterion along with Breathless are rumored to be releasing:
- BEFORE SUNRISE (1995), BEFORE SUNSET (2004), SUBURBIA (1996)
- THE NAKED CITY
- W.R.: MYSTERIES OF THE ORGANISM
- HUMANITY AND PAPER BALLOONS
- MACUNAÍMA
Awesome news, I don't know if I will still buy that Humanity and Paper Balloons MoC release now, we will have to wait and see. I don't like that Before Sunrise/Set are going to be in the collection but I think they could have some killer releases and the films are enjoyable enough to buy, for the very least to hear the Linklater commentaries.

Oh wow, Before Sunrise and Before Sunset? Too bad I haven't been able to watch Before Sunset, since I need to see the prequel before the sequel. As for them being in the collection, why not? I haven't seen them so I don't know how important they are, but maybe they're important enough. They do have Shock Corridor, after all, in their collection.

Another habit.
Before Sunrise came first, so in how I view things, it's a prequel to Before Sunset.
