My top Cronenberg 1. The Fly 2. A History of Violence 3. The Dead Zone 4. Naked Lunch Have not seen a bunch of his stuff. But based on these four he is already one of my favorite directors.

He looks overrated to me. But I have only seen two films: Videodrome and Naked Lunch. I like Videodrome, but don`t find it fantastic. Naked Lunch gave me nothing, and I drowned in its "over-surrealism" and found it too hard to grasp. But I`m going to see A History of Violence quite soon. Maybe I get a bit more fan of Cronenberg after some time (=more of his films seen)

Yeah Naked Lunch in my opinion is terrible. And it gets worse and worse more I think about it.

You are a jerk. Have you read the book? If you had, you would realize just how quote un-quote unfilmable it is. You would come to appreciate Cronenberg's version a hell of a lot more. I hope Linklater will do just as good of a job on A Scanner Darkly.

The Linklater adaptation that is much more "unadaptable" is Fast Food Nation.

From seeing a history of violence I dont think I'm exagerrating in saying that Cronenberg is one of the finest directors alive. His attention is remarkable and you can really see his contribution to most scenes.

Re-ranked. I now think Videodrome and Dead Ringers are better films than Naked Lunch, but I still admire that film very much. I agree with mixed: Cronenberg really is one of the finest directors working today.
1. VIDEODROME - 10/10 2. Dead Ringers - 10/10 3. Naked Lunch - 10/10 4. A History of Violence - 10/10 5. The Fly - 9/10 6. eXistenZ - 8/10 7. Spider - 6/10

A History of Violence - 9/10 Naked Lunch - 8/10 (my favorite of his...yes, the weirdness will turn off many, but it's just so weird, and cronenberg actually takes the ridiculous noir-like storyline seriously, that you gotta just revel in its absurdity and have fun) The Fly - 8/10 Videodrome - 8/10

I am glad you didn't rate any of his films perfect. I really think he is overrated and his films just don't stick with me, or do anything for me. They are just "eh". I would rate his films as follows:
1. VIDEODROME - 7/10 2. Dead Ringers - 8/10 3. Naked Lunch - 6/10 4. A History of Violence - 8/10 5. The Fly - 8/10 6. Crash - 6/10 7. Camera - 6.5/10

I like Cronenberg to one extent. I think he shows with A History of Violence that he manage to have almost complete control of his material. Technically he impresses me. Not too much fancy camera movements or anything, but solid and satisfying. Naked Lunch also has this great visuals, but the content never got me really involved; it never captured my enthusiasm, which is sad. Apart from that, I've only seen Videodrome, which I liked pretty much. Here's how I rank them:
A History of Violence **** (8/10) Videodrome *** (7/10) Naked Lunch ** (5/10)

You are about the first person I have ever met who agrees with me here. His subject matter never connects with me, it just leaves me at the end with nothing. And I don't find his films that entertaining either.

I like Cronenberg's early work the best. Shivers, The Brood, The Dead Zone, stuff like that. More straight horror. I'm not a big fan of his later stuff. I liked Crash at first, but it has really cooled off on me.

Just saw Scanners, not Cronenberg's best film, but a great one nonetheless.

Pumped for Eastern Promises!
Just watched Spider, not really impressed with it. I can appreciate what it was trying to say but it was too vague to have any real meaning.
