The Bergman films I've seen are beautiful. Cries and whispers, gorgeous warm colour and very beautiful and haunting. The final scene is the most beautiful and haunting thing you could wish to see in a film.

I've also seen wild strawberries which is technically spectacular and has some really nicely photogrpahed scenes. I prefer cries and whispers so far though, their are many more I hope to see.

I strongly recommend Seventh Seal and if you can handle it Fanny and Alexander (TV Version) they are two of the best films I have ever seen.

Oh, I agree. Det Sjunde Inseglet (The Seventh Seal) is one of the greatest films out there, and I strongly reccomend you guys Jungfrukallan as well... Also agree on Fanny och Alexander; A work of genious. But I need to see more Bergman myself.

So far I've only seen Wild Strwberries (* * * *) and The Seventh Seal (* * * 1/2)
I will be seeing Persona, Cries and Whispers and Fanny and Alexander soon.

criterionmaster, could you explain what you mean by "if you can handle it Fanny and Alexander". Is this because of the length, or the content?

This director is one of my top 5 favorite filmmakers!
These are the films I've seen in order of which I love the most, with comments:
1. Fanny och Alexander (1982) (on my Top 10 favorite films list) 2. Viskningar och rop (1972) (kinda Paradoxidal film actually; the film is creepy, sad and painful to watch as well as being one of the most beautiful photographed films I've ever seen) 3. Smultronstället (1957) (Never seen the usage of flashbacks been so great, astonishing!) 4. Persona (1966) (great character-driven film with a subtle feel of undiscovered truths, I fancy the beginning and the end!) 5. Jungfrukällan (1960) (my favorite revenge-film!) 6. Det Sjunde inseglet (1957) (Original and defently enchanting, classic - what more can I say?) 7. Scener ur ett äktenskap (1973) (Top-notch acting and very solid, man!) 8. Saraband (2003) (a very good TV-movie! Above Avrage.)
I love the way Bergman uses his actors, he basically uses theater actors/actresses and I've read that he contact his actors/actresses before writing his scripts so that he can picture them while he's writing the story. Genious!
I also like the 3 hour long documentary Ingmar Bergman - 3 dokumentärer om film, teater, Fårö och livet av Marie Nyreröd (2004) . I got it on tape and constantly watch bits of it when I'm eating food and has nothing else to do.

I saw Smultronstället not too long ago, and it became my favorite film right away. Also seen Høstsonaten (Autumn Sonata) since last time I was in here. Absolutely fantastic! I`m looking forward to see more of this master of cinema.

I've seen three so far: Wild Strawberries( in my top 5), Persona (my top 25) and The Seventh Seal (disapointed). 2 Masterpieces and one average movie. I see Cries and Whispers tomorrow. I also want to see more (the faith trilogy, FaA, Scenes from a Marriage).

Well you have seen only Seventh Seal so maybe you weren't disappointed. If I would have seen Fanny first I would have been alittle disappointed but I still would of loved it. It is truly a great film.

That's awesome.
I've only seen two of his films - The Seventh Seal, which I really liked when I first saw it, but it doesn't really mean much to me now (nice imagery though) and Cries and Whispers, which is one of the most haunting and beautiful films I've ever seen. It depressed me too much for me to put it on my top 20 though. I'm hoping to see Scenes From A Marriage soon.

I like Smultronstället slightly more. Both are on my top 20, though. I can's say who's the best, but my favorite for the moment is Smultronstället. So I'm with Dan on this one.

"I've never gotten anything out of his movies. They have felt constructed, faux intellectual and completely dead. Cinematographically uninteresting and infinitely boring. Godard is a fucking bore. He's made his films for the critics. One of the movies, Masculin, féminin, was shot here in Sweden. It was mindnumbingly boring. " (Ingmar Bergman on Godard)

Its a pretty well known fact that while Bergman is a film master, he himself has a very poor taste in film.
