Fantastic... I have the version from YouTube on my myspace site... You should see the messages I get from my teenage counterparts regarding their reaction to watching it

I just watched it on youtube (is it really the original version?)
It was absolutely astonishing! Definitely a masterpiece, as you said Espen!

Yes! So original and so amazing. The images in the film are still implanted in my head. I love everything about it and it's probably my favorite short film.

When you have someone commenting on the strange things in this movie, it becomes really hilarious. Too bad I wasn't able to record any of it, although if you could hear it, then you'd just hear me laughing and my friend saying these really bizarre but funny things.

Well, I thought it was hilarious when my friend was narrating the movie.
Just try watching it with someone that isn't a film buff, and has a fun and wicked sense of humor, and you should be laughing your ass off the whole time.

Maybe so. But maybe I would just have been irritated, also

I have a hard time with most Bunuel, and this is no different. Some awesome moments, but overall the surrealism is just too much for me.

What helps is watching it as a comedy, or having someone around who isn't a snobby film buff commenting on some of the bizarre shit that's going on. Then you'll have a riot of a time and really enjoy it.

Yeah, this is really great. I saw it later last year and whoa. Amazing what a short film like this can do.

Yes! Sometimes I really can't stand violence. Not when it's full-on, up close and personal like that. And her eye, damnit!

I can understand that, though I've never had a problem stomaching violence.

Yes! Sometimes I really can't stand violence. Not when it's full-on, up close and personal like that. And her eye, damnit! I don't think audiences in the 20's were any less disturbed than you were. That part is the whole point of the film - to disturb the viewers and change their perception of what the medium can do. Besides, it didn't even look that real to me. You can easily tell that part where the eye is actually slit is not a human eye but a sheep eye. It's still pretty tame compared to the gorefests made these days.

Yes, it was obviously rather shocking back then. But these days, its very tame.

I guess I'm no expert on sheep's eyes or horror techniques! I try to watch some scary movies with my friends, to please them, but I really can't. I've walked out of how many frigging cinemas!

This just occurred to me when I saw this thread, but I just saw Oldboy a few days ago, and I bet the ants are a reference to the ants in the man's hand in this film...

Yes, it was obviously rather shocking back then. But these days, its very tame. I still think it is pretty shocking. There is something so un-scary about modern horror films, that if all the same stuff happened today, in a modern film, it would definitely be tame, but just thinking about this, and the look of the film, and the fact that it is this old, brings chills to me when I see it. I am not saying it is a horror film, or scary, or whatever, I am just saying it still has some shocking elements, to me at least.
