If there's another discussion about Roundhay Garden Scene going around, I haven't read it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roundhay_Garden_SceneIncludes a link to the complete, uncensored MADNESS that is Roundhay Garden Scene, in .mov format. Oh, it's about two seconds long in total, but you know what? It's the first movie ever made. There is some discussion over whether this, or its younger brother shot on Leeds bridge, are the first or even real movies. Since I watched them, I consider them to be real movies. Sure, they don't have your action scene or your sex scene, but I like it. It has a nice feeling to it.

Brilliant. It is very cool to see the FIRST thing EVER made. I don't know why i like it, very simple. But for some reason it was great lol. It is like the most simple things could be the best things. It was very interesting to watch, thank you for sharing. Now I can say I have seen the first film.

You're welcome. I share your feelings on it too, actually. It's in my Top 100, even if it's only two seconds long. I just woke up one day and was like "you know, there were movies made before 2006. What was the first one?" ((Of course, the hardest one to solve is what is the youngest movie ever made? The opposite of Roundhay Garden Scene, the movie made right now. Oh, now that one's too old. That question will blow your mind if you think about it too much. )

I watched it. It's cool to see the first film ever shot, but sorry Joel, I don't think it's a masterpiece. And, yes it is pretentious to put it in your top 20.

It's in my Top 100. #88.
Why?
Because it has a nice feeling to it. It's two seconds that I find enjoyable, and really, that's all you can expect from a Top 100. Why not put something in your Top 20 that you really enjoy?
Should your Top 20 be full of movies that you hate but everyone else thinks is pretty good?

I can't give you a solid listing with [Movie A] over [Movie B], but I can list 74 entries that are likely to make it into my top 100. Of course, this only includes movies that I've watched. A more thorough list of movies I've watched can be found at the IMDB. But for now: 12 Angry Men (1997) 7th Street (2003) A Fistful of Dollars (1964) A Talking Picture (2003) Amelie (2001) Animatrix, The (nine shorts) (2003) Blues Brothers, The (1980) Buena Vista Social Club (1999) Bus 174 (2002) Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) Casino (1995) Clerks (1994) Cool Hand Luke (1967) Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door (2001) Culture Jam: Hijacking Commercial Culture (2001) Desperado (1995) Dreams (1990) Elephant Man, The (1980) Equilibrium (2002) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) Fargo (1996) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) Fight Club (1999) Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) Godfather, The (1972) Goodfellas (1990) Grave of the Fireflies (1988) Green Mile, The (1999) Harold and Maude (1971) Hellboy (2004) Hero (2002) Hotel Rwanda (2004) Illusionist, The (2006) Incredibles, The (2004) Iron Giant, The (1999) Jaws (1975) Joint Security Area (2000) K-PAX (2001) Last Samurai, The (2003) Le Samourai (1967) Léon the Professional (1994) Long Goodbye, The (1973) Lost in Translation (2003) Matrix, The (1999) Memento (2000) Oldboy (2003) One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) Ong-bak (2003) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) Playing for Change (2003) Pulp Fiction (1994) Quitting (2001) Raging Bull (1980) Requiem for a Dream (2000) Reservoir Dogs (1992) Roundhay Garden Scene (1888) Royal Tenenbaums, The (2001) Sanjuro (1962) Seven Samurai, The (1954) Seventh Seal, The (1957) Shawshank Redemption, The (1994) Sin City (2005) Snatch (2000) Spirited Away (2001) Steamboy (2004) Super Size Me (2004) Sword of Doom (1966) Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) Terminator 1 (1984) Triplets of Belleville (2003) Usual Suspects, The (1995) Waking Life (2001) Yojimbo (1961)

No, I don't think you should put something in a top 20 list if you don't like it, but I just think Joel is doing this to be cool. This is just his nature.

Well, if he honestly enjoys it above most other movies, then I still don't see the problem. Hell, he could even put Alone in the Dark in his Top 20 if he honestly enjoyed it and I probably wouldn't mind that much.
He just sees in it something differently than you do. Or, he wants to be elitist. Either way, I'm not really bothered by it too much.

I'm not really either, I just pointed out that I disagreed. I don't hate the movie, I liked it. But more beacause it was interesting to see, not because I enjoyed it, really.

I liked it, but I its a two second long piece, nothing more. It does not deserve to be ranked higher than longer films in my opinion. Even if it is the first film ever shot.

Well, that depends on what defines your Top 100. Can an enjoyable two-seconds rank higher than a sometimes enjoyable, sometimes not-enjoyable, sometimes profound two hours? Should your Top 100 be full of movies that are moving? Or should it be full of movies you enjoyed the most? Besides, I can place it in my Top 100 because I've seen 1888's Traffic Crossing Leeds Bridge, and have decided Roundhay Garden Scene is the better of the two two-second clips. And if Roundhay Garden Scene were second, I might still go with it. (Roundhay Garden Scene came first, then Traffic Crossing Leeds Bridge.)

Not sure. If there were more interest, it could be. Amazon doesn't show any results, so it's probably not available on DVD.

It was nice but not extraordinary. I don't think it was a masterpiece. I do think it is important due to the fact that it is the first film. If it weren't, nobody would care about this short clip.
