One of the greatest filmmakers around today. Sonatine an utter masterpiece. Hana bi brilliant. Boiling point funny, kikujiro sweet, brother a blip, dolls very pretty, zatoichi not bad and violent cop average. And haven't seen getting any, kids return and a scene at the sea. Or Takeshis'

I`ve only seen Violent Cop, Hana-Bi and Zatoichi. I am unsure what I think about Takeshi. Do I like his style? Well, I guess I do. But I have to see more of him before I can say anything else.
The First film I saw was Zatoichi. I think it`s a great movie. Nice atmosphere, and a brilliantly cool Takeshi in the lead role. The other one I saw, was Hana-Bi. It lacked something essential. You know, I didn`t really feel anything for the main character, and that, among a few other things, made the film unsatisfying. I can, though, see its qualities, and like the tecnical aspects of it. Think I need to see it again. Then I saw Violent Cop, and I was a bit more impressed, in fact. Uncompromising and raw storytelling. But this, too, lacked something essential.

Sonatine is his best. I also liked Zatoichi, but Sonatine is better.

Takeshi Kitano certainly is an exceptionally talented guy. I still haven't seen a few of his films, I'll get around to it one day.

I recommend the beat takeshi trilogy boxset. You can get it at play.com and it includes sonatine, boiling point and violent cop for about $30

Also, keep in mind that his other films aren't fun like Zatoichi. They tend to be bleak and violent.

Sonatine disappointed me. It was very slow moving. They pretty much played games for about a half hour of the movie! The ending was very poor also. But as a whole it was a decent character study.

Sonatine is one of the best gangster films ever! You don't know what you're talking about.

The brilliant thing about Sonatine is its complete disregard for the narrative structure it sets up. The beach scenes are beautiful and represent the calm before a storm we never see.
Sonatine is somewhere in my top 10 films.

My favourite director! If you guys didn't know, he started out a comedian and worked his way into acting and directing from there. He's a director, actor, author, comedian, painter, poet, and currently hosts around five TV shows a week in Japan. He truly is an amazing person.
Anyway, here are all the films I've seen from him ranked in order of how much I liked them. The only movie of his that I haven't seen yet it Getting Any.
1. Hana-Bi 2. Sonatine 3. A Scene at the Sea 4. Boiling Point 5. Kikujiro 6. Dolls 7. Takeshis' 8. Kid's Return 9. Violent Cop 10. Zatoichi 11. Brother
