From Dark Horizons: Source: Hollywood Saloon
Here's a surprising factoid - twenty five years after its theatrical release, new scenes were shot for Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" it would seem.
Since the DVD format became popular, fans have been clamoring for Scott's "final cut" of the film, his true definitive version of the sci-fi epic rather than the rushed 1992 "Director's Cut" which Scott has publicly stated he was unhappy with.
Though work began in 2000 on the disc set, legal issues and other factors have delayed it for years. Then late last year it was confirmed that the film would be finally coming out in a massive multi-disc box set sometime in the second half of 2007 to celebrate the film's 25th anniversary.
Anticipation remains high. Scott's "Legend" and "Kingdom of Heaven", two films which received mixed reaction upon release, scored lavish 'final cut' DVD editions in the last few years with the longer versions garnering far more acclaim than their original counterparts.
In any case this week saw a surprising new twist in the story. Actress Joanna Cassidy, famous for playing the Replicant Zhora in "Blade Runner", released the following comment on her official site:
"Joanna has just finished re-shooting her scenes from the original BLADE RUNNER movie. Joanna is wearing her original outfit (which she kept over from the first production). These new scenes will be part of the upcoming special BLADE RUNNER DVD re-release. Check back for more details."
This is surprising news, begging the question of how much new footage was shot and what impact it will have on the final cut.
End of Article.

I don't want new footage. I like my director's cut just fine...

this has to be a hoax. I know the Final Cut's coming out in a few months (and I absolutely can't wait), but newly filmed scenes? An 8 billion year old Joanna Cassidy reprising her role as a half-naked android? I don't buy it.

Interesting. The manager at the movie theatre I work at told me that they are going to be rereleasing Blade Runner to theatres with the new footage and then releasing the dvd. Is there any truth to this rumor?

No idea, but that seems like it corroborates with this release.

I remember what i was gonna ask! Has anybody actually read the book the film is based on, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick?? Only a lot of people i know, including a literature and creative writing student, have never even heard of Dick and he's like THE classic sci-fi writer!! Also did Minority Report and A Scanner Darkly which have both been made into films lately.

I have not seen Blade Runner yet (I know, bad me. I've been waiting for this DVD though) so I am uber excited about this. I'll be getting the 5-Disc set of course.

I probably love Blade Runner more than any of you, but even I think that's overkill. I'll stick with the 4-disc edition.

I have gone on a strike against Blade Runner DVD's even though I love the hell out of the movie. They have just cheated us too much with 10 releases of the film, each getting more expensive.

To be honest, that film didn't meet my expectations for it. The plot wasn't that well executed IMO though it's theme is intriguing. Ridley Scott's vision of the future seems awfully dated and 80's-ish.

Ridley Scott's vision of the future seems awfully dated and 80's-ish. 80s-ish? how so? it practically brings out the world of 1940s noirs, fused with asian influences, obnoxious electronic billboards and eternal darkness. For my money it's one of the most visually stunning movies around.

^yes, those billboards are indeed obnoxious. I haven't seen it for quite a long time, so I don't recall the small details of it, but the film does have an 80's-ish style despite the noir-like way the blade runner dress. It sort of reminds me of the other trashy sci/fi flicks I've seen like Total Recall and Judge Dredd. For example when I saw the strip club scene, it instantly gave me the 80's impression. I admit that the special effects are good for that time, but even so the story just didn't pull me into it and the romantic subplot was uninteresting.

The billboards are the best part of the entire movie. Besides the distict seperation between various Asian languages. I recognized Hiragana, Kanj and Hangul, and they weren't mixed up!
Also, definitely a product of its time. There were probably only a few 80s-90s movies that didn't stink of that era. But I didn't mind it much at all, and that stuff usually does bother me. Neon shirts should be banned.

It's one of the greatest films of all time. I plan on getting the five disc version. Five cuts?! I've only seen two of them. I'll be spending an entire week watching one version a day.

to be honest, the only thing I found glaringly 80s or outdated about the movie was the Atari advertisements.

Ironic because Atari is still quite active, although it isn't as much of the forerunner it used to be. I hope you don't mind that I fixed up your quote to reflect what I think you were trying to say. Not Atari only, but all the product placements. A lot of the companies have since gone out of business or like Atari, came across hard times and might not be around today if not for brand loyalty (Criterion Collection ).
