This may be the most bizarre yet poetic and hypnotic movie I've ever seen. Resnais takes the seamless transitions between past, present, and future he introduced in Hiroshima Mon Amour to a whole new level. In this film there is no sense of which scenes are set in the present and which are set in another time. There is this one shot where there are people in this garden. The people cast shadows, but the triangular trees that align the garden have no shadows. I have no idea how Resnais shot this. The plot is simple: A man meets a woman in a salon and claims that they had a romantic affair a year ago. The woman denies that they have ever met. The man tries to convince her that they did by recalling his memories/imagination of their encounter. I can't say I understood this film and I don't think that there is a solution to this puzzle.

A highly fascinating film, with quite dazzling cinematography indeed. Frustratingly intangible on first viewing, though. Need to rewatch this baby.

i have heard soo much about this film that i am dying to see it. i have heard it called resnais's masterpiece, would either of you call it that? i really loved hiroshima mon amour and night and fog, but haven't seen anything else from the man.

Well, Marienbad is certainly much more experimental than Hiroshima. The spacial and temporal relationships are so distorted. This film makes Persona seem straightforward. People might find Marienbad pretentious while other would call it a masterpiece. The cinematography and editing is some of the most interesting I've seen. I think Kubrick's The Shining was inspired by the long hallway takes in Marienbad. The abundant use of voiceover is also very cool, similar to the beginning of Hiroshima.
