Nicolas Cage to Play Al Capone Source: MTV May 11, 2007
MTV reports that Nicolas Cage will reteam with Snake Eyes director Brian DePalma for The Untouchables: Capone Rising.
Cage will play a younger version of Al Capone, the character made famous by Robert De Niro. "Capone Rising" is a prequel to DePalma's 1987 classic The Untouchables, and will revolve around the early dealings between Capone and Irish cop Jimmy Malone, a role that garnered an Oscar for Sean Connery.
Principal photography will begin in October.
End of Article.
Thoughts on this casting, as well as your thoughts on a prequel to The Untouchables? What did you think of the original?

I'd like to see it. I loved Connery's character in the Untouchables.

The names Nicolas Cage and Brian De Palma don't sell for me, although you know, I'd probably give this a shot some day.

Speaking of Cage, we started talking about him in school, my teacher brought him up and said he was listening to the radio and they were talking about how Cage has never been in a good movie, and my teacher was so surprised they didn't like National Treasure or Face/Off, and I laughed, and said I agree with them on those two, but I didn't realize how many good films he has actually been in. Adaptation, Raising Arizona, Grindhouse, Rumble Fish, Wild at Heart, Moonstruck, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and depending on who you are, maybe another one or two. DePalma has done so much crap, but he did make some good stuff, and is one of the best directors ever according to some people (like TSPDT site). I probably won't check this out in theaters, but might on DVD. So, although these names might not interest you, or many others, they are still better than a lot of people give them credit for.

Yes, Cage is a very good actor. Underrated in my opinion. He is unfairly bashed by some people.

Yeah, he has made a lot of good movies, but he has also made a ton of crap movies. Wicker Man, Ghost Rider, Next, World Trade Center (ugh), Windtalkers, The Family Man, Gone in 60 Seconds, City of Angels... He is so inconsistent with the movies he makes. And something about his hunchbacked walk and constantly irritated mannerisms annoys me. My favorite performance from him is Leaving Las Vegas, easily.
About this movie, it has probably the most unpredictable director along with one of the most unpredictable actors. I would go ahead and say this will be mediocre, but one can't be for sure.

Yes, he is doubly amazing in Adaptation, so it could make up for a shitty role, especially since he is so good in the film.

No Untouchables for Nicolas Cage Source: Variety May 25, 2007
If Brian De Palma moves ahead with prequel The Untouchables: Capone Rising, it will be sans Nicolas Cage, reports Variety.
Cage had been in negotiations to star in the follow-up, but talks have ended because of scheduling issues, according to his representatives.
Relativity Media is financing the film, while Paramount has domestic distribution rights. Art Linson, who produced De Palma's 1987 pic The Untouchables, is producing the prequel as well.
It was announced last week that Gerard Butler has joined the cast as Jimmy Malone, played by Sean Connery in the original. Cage would have played the young Al Capone.
