WIDE RELEASES
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (Gore Verbinski)
IMDb Description: As the threat to pirates-at-large near its climax, Will Turner (Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Knightley) form an alliance with surprise accomplice Captain Barbossa (Rush) and sail to the Far East in order to save Jack Sparrow from the mysterious afterworld known as Davey Jones's Locker.
My Opinion: I really didn't think the first film was good enough to warrant two sequels, or even one. These really aren't my type of films anyways, and the huge buzz around this just seems crazy. They act like this is an "event film" like Star Wars or something, this is just crap. Not to mention I heard many terrible thoughts of the second one, and didn't like the first one that much.
Bug (William Friedkin)
IMDB Description: A Gulf War vet turned drifter (Shannon) holes up with a woman in hiding (Judd) in her seedy motel room. The pair is relatively isolated, except for the bug infestation problem that triggers their respective psychological issues.
My Opinion: To tell you the truth, I think this looks really bad, it was all fast cut in the trailers, and looked like it featured many cliched filmmaking techniques, but it is Friedkin. The man behind The Exorcist, and the supposedly great French Connection, and a new film from a seventies master is a plus, so this has the chance to be good. I really want to know what everyone thinks of this, and if they think it looks good. Anyone gonna see this?
LIMITED RELEASES
Angel-A [NY/LA] (Luc Besson)
IMDb Description: With only half a day left to pay off his substantial debts, Andre (Debbouze) decides to end his life by jumping off a bridge. It's there sees Angela (Rasmussen) moments before she leaps into the Seine, and when Andre saves her life, he might have just met the one person who can save his, too.
My Opinion: Hmm, a Besson film. He is really hit or miss, but I have heard some buzz about this one that sounds positive. I am really debating seeing this ever, or if I am excited at all. I can't really tell. Anyone know anything about this? The poster does looks awesome.
Papurika [NY] (Satoshi Kon)
IMDB Description: When machines designed to allow therapists to enter their patient's dreams are stolen, the scientists who developed the devices set out to retrieve them. Leading the group is psychotherapist Dr. Atsuko Chiba and her alter-ego -- a fearless young woman who goes by the code name Paprika.
My Thoughts: This film looks and sounds really awesome, plus people on here have mentioned the director being really good. It looks like this could be an anime film I would really dig. I doubt we will get it around here ever.
The Boss of It All [Limited] (Lars von Trier)
IMDB Description: An IT company hires an actor (Albinus) to serve as the company's president in order to help the business get sold to a cranky Icelander (Fridriksson).
My Thoughts: What the hell, Von Trier has a new film out? Awesome. It will probably play at this film series around here, if so, then I will go and see it. After Dancer in the Dark anything with this guy's name on it means I see it.
Golden Door (Emanuele Crialese) [LA/NY]
IMDB Description: Aboard a steamship bound for America, the widower Salvatore Mancuso (Amato) encounters a mysterious Englishwoman, Lucy (Gainsbourg), who, for some odd reason, wants to marry before they reach their shared destination.
My Thoughts: Eh, I will probably never get a chance to see this, nor does that plot sound super interesting. Anything you know that might get me interested in this?
