you, sir, continue to not give the rat movie the credit it deserves I gave no slight to the rat movie. I just think it would be more progressive to not hand out self-congratulatory awards every year. Which is not to say the awards should be affirmed, just that there should be more cultural diversity. Wouldn't it have been interesting to see Mongol won Best Foreign Language Film? A Mongolian movie? I think there'd be quite a shock, almost like when Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon won in 2000. Subtitles?!

Still sort of annoyed that Diablo Cody won Best Original Screenplay, but oh well. I'll get over it. I think this is the first time ever where I have no real complaints about the winners. yeah, good shit, especially since my upset special Marion Cotillard came through. And that picture of Roderick Jaynes just about made my night ;D I was really hoping that No Country would win editing, just to see the Coen brothers come up on stage. How awesome would that have been? Oh well, maybe one day.

Although I hadn't seen a lot of movies from last year, I was happy about what happened with movies I had seen. I saw Old Country and loved it, so it was good to see it win some awards.

Good shit. Unfortunately, I still haven't seen most of the films that won, but I'm going to. I'm glad that the stuff I had seen that I wanted to win won, though. The show, as usual was way too long, but I dug this bit: "Even Norbit got nominated. It's so rare that the Academy recognizes movies that aren't good."

The foreign film nominations were really obscure this year. None of the foreign films that I had seen (like Black Book, Paris Je T'aime, or La Vie en Rose) were nominated. Though Mongol and Counterfeiters, the film that won, looked interesting.
And there is some cultural diversity at the Oscars. I mean, just look at who won the individual awards. Javier Bardem (Spain), Daniel Day-Lewis (Irish), Marion Cotillard (French), and Tilda Swinton (British). Not to mention that the winners for make-up art, documentary short feature, and costume design are French, the winner for Original score is Italian, and the winners of best song are Irish and Czech respectively. Also, Austria's win for best foreign film is its first win and only second nomination. I'd say that is some serious cultural diversity for an academy based in America.

Sorry, I don't buy that for a second. All but one of those four actor/resses were in American movies, (sure, it's cool that we're not seeing stuff like blackface actors, but none of these people would really be segregated like that), and even so, western European countries have always been "safe" territory for handing out awards to "foreign" countries. Even with Mongolian and Austrian (that is your best point right there) productions, we still have a ways to go, and I don't really see these awards helping any. But that's just cranky old me.
