No one mentioned this gangly bastard. His films are really fun, reservoir dogs is my favourite, I like Pulp fiction but it doesn't entirely amaze me....

He is my favorite of all-time! He just mixes so much I love about film into one. He is just the ultimate film fan for me and he takes his love for film and turns it into amazing films.

Yeah, in terms of actual direction, he's somewhere between slightly above average and very good. Nothing spectacular. Where he truly excels is his writing. He's one of the best and most unique screenwriters to come around in a long, long time.

Tarantino is a man with great talent. His films are always entertaining as hell. But I have a problem with him. His films are practically empty. Sure, full of cool dialogue and great mix of music and visuals, but what does he say? Maybe he just wants to entertain (He doesn`t really say anything about the violence. Nor does he say anything with it). He just seems to use it because it looks cool. And it`s usually cool to see a Tarantino-film. It`s just that he will never be one of my favorites, because what he does is not to give me anything other than "a cool time" in front of the screen. He`s an artist, for sure, but not an artist as Bergman or Scorsese are. his films are good, but trite.

Well I see what you are saying, but the man has very few films and I believe will grow. He has his war epic coming out that might show people what he is made of. But I love his films anyways.

^ And a horror movie!
I have to admit that when I want entertainment in the PUREST form, I watch a Tarentino film, and Im getting a bit tired of all the knocking on this guy, although he definatly is not my favorite. It seems like this guy has given many independant filmmakers hope of success, and nobody epitimizes this success like Tarentino. I dont think there is a boring moment during any of Tarantino's films. Having said that, I guess it is safe to say that this guy might get a tad bit too much hype, and Tarantino's fanboys are ANNOYING AS HELL, but I still enjoy his film.

Nobody has mentioned the great Kill Bill. Vol.1 is an empty yet exhilarating film while Vol.2 has the explanations we so craved in Vol.1. The dialogue in Vol.2 is very good. Bill is great in it too and I have a new respect for David Carradine. He's so slick and cool as Bill; he really brings the character to life and makes him very believable, I can't see anyone else playing the character. The Showdown at The House of Blue Leaves at the end of Vol.1 is a great scene. The whole Crazy 88's part was great as well but the imagery in this showdown between The Bride and O-Ren and the music (gotta love "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" from Santa Esmeralda during this part) is just perfect. I get chills every time I see that scene.

At least Abbas Kiarostami, director of Taste of Cherry, likes Quentin Tarantino. He said this in the interview found on the Criterion Collection DVD of Taste of Cherry. I couldn't get screenshots of where he said he thought Tarantino was a nice guy, because he was speaking in English and the subtitles were only for when he was speaking Persian/Farsi. IntroAt the end of the interview, he stops speaking in English, so I was able to get this kind of summary about what he likes about Tarantino's movies, even though he likes the director over his work. Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4So, at least not everything thinks he's a bastard.

QT took a lot of ideas from other movies. ex: Reservoir Dogs was heavily influenced by Ringo Lam's City on Fire and John Woo's A Better Tomorrow II. Plus I can't believe Pulp Fiction beat out Trois Coleurs: Rouge for the Golden Palm. Pulp Fiction is nowhere near Rouge's stratosphere.

It was a shock to criterionmaster, but after I rewatched Pulp Fiction, I thought much less of it. I still think it's a decent movie, but fell from around #11 on my Top 20 to... #75.
A friend of mine was telling me about how he watched Kill Bill and was really disappointed with it. In part because he had just seen Game of Death, and was like "man, Tarantino took it line for line!" He was also like "you know Bruce Lee's yellow jump suit? Yeah, he stole that too. And Bruce Lee even looked better in that than Uma Thurman did." And I was like "Yeah, but that's because Uma Thurman's nose is so screwed up."
I haven't seen Kill Bill myself, though...

I haven't seen either, but...
Had Bruce Lee been able to complete Game of Death as he wanted, it would have been much better than even Enter the Dragon, which I have seen and really enjoy. There wouldn't have been a contest. But since they had to scrape what they had together, the end result was like this: the Bruce Lee parts are good, the non-Bruce Lee parts are not-so-good. So, most people kind of average that out to a meh or a good-but-flawed. My friend just kind of laughed at the flaws but enjoyed the rest.

I often find that Tarantino improves on the films that he pays homage to in his. I for example think that Kill Bill Vol 1 is a better movie than Sword of Doom, even though Tarantino jacks some scenes from the older film.

Yeah, exactly. I have no problem with him taking from films, it's called paying homage or remaking certain scenes, and I have no problem with remaking films if you can IMPROVE on them, which in most cases he does. Now for things such as lines and stuff, those I am perfectly fine with, most films borrow from other films and don't even give credit (fucking Sixth Sense, ugh!). And yes, I agree with beed, Kill Bill is the better film, between it and Sword of Doom.
And just so it is out there, I personally have a thing for Uma, even if her feet our bigger than Tarantino's forehead. (Speaking of feet though, one time me and blackmoses watched The Tyra Banks show and Tarantino was on there and he revealed his fetish for feet, and they had a huge "best feet" contest with Tarantino judging, it was great. lol)
