Let`s talk about smoking in/on film. In black&white, smoke can be a nice, though insignificant, detail. But other than looking cool, can it somehow symbolise anything? I`m just curious about your thoughts here. Maybe there aren`t many thoughts on this subjects, and that I`m the only one that find this "phenomenon" interesting, but no matter what, I guess it can be ok to have a tread whereas to post (beautiful, symbolic?) pictures of men and woman that smokes on film. Is this a bizarre idea? I want some comments here, both on "smoking on celluloid" and my mental condition.

'Isn't breathless an incredibly ironic name for a film in which the main character is smoking a cigar in almost every shot?'

I HATE smoking but when it is on film it looks great. In the film noir's when you can see the smoke perfect it just looks beautiful. That is the only example of what I am talking about. I am sure there are tons more but I can't find any.

Well, I meant that's when it looks the coolest. Plus, you look like Bruno S (at least in my mind, ;D), so you'd obviously look cool. I love the face he's making in that screen lol

I saw Blade Runner a couple of days ago (as you can see in "rate the last film you saw"), and noticed how utterly cool the smoke looked like. Smoking can look fantastic in colour movies too. Didn`t find a picture of the man smoking in the start, though...

Smoke in Movies -- Get an "R" Source: IMDB
In a rare alteration of its movie ratings system, the MPAA said on Thursday that the panel that assesses Hollywood movies will begin considering "depictions that glamorize smoking or movies that feature pervasive smoking outside of a historic or other mitigating context." Until now, the subjects that movie raters have primarily considered are violence, language, nudity, and drugs. In a statement, MPAA CEO Dan Glickman said, "There is broad awareness of smoking as a unique public health concern due to nicotine's highly addictive nature, and no parent wants their child to take up the habit. ... The appropriate response of the rating system is to give more information to parents on this issue."
End of Article.
Thoughts?

^Lol, the MPAA is the worst. They are the most obviously white collar Protestant group of people I have ever heard of.

Doc Oc lights one up. A cigar, yes, but that's smoking! Try convincing anyone that Spider-Man 3, therefore, should receive the R-rating. Want movies to stop selling? The MPAA needs to grow the fuck up.

Because only people 17 and over can handle seeing someone smoke and not feel the urge to try it? Psh, whatever. Why don't they do the same thing for driving? Driving is a choice that someone makes, and driving results in many deaths as well.

I love watching smoking on film. Withnail and I, anybody? It wasn't glamourous at all, but it looked so damn cool. And anyway, kids are going to try it whether they see it in movies or not.

I was talking to my dad and he said that he doesn't think it will affect a rating, like if a movie is rated “PG-13” and there is smoking in it, it won't get bumped up to "R" or anything, he thinks it will just be added in what they say is wrong with the movie, so any parents who don't want their kids seeing smoking will know. It will be like "extreme violence, nudity… cigarette smoking."
Mom: "What!? Cigarette smoking! You aren't allowed to watch that!"
