Actually, while I haven't seen the Flags of Our Fathers nor Letters from Iwo Jima, from what I've heard, it works like this:
Flags of Our Fathers - American interpretation of WWII
Letters from Iwo Jima - Japanese interpretation of WWII
So, you kind of need to see both. Also, criterionmaster is acting hastily immature toward the former.
As for the "foreign film" category, yeah, it sucks that one of the more "foreign" movies didn't win, but face it, they always pick the popular choice for foreign movie. Always.
But hey, rest easy, Fanny and Alexander won.
