La Promesse is a very good film. The entire film has no score nor music. Very cinema-veritè style. A good 4 out of a 5. I hope to get Rosetta soon.

I advise you to watch Rosetta right NOW! These directors are the future of cinema, with their gritty cinematography. Their films lack cliche, and have some of the best performances of the last decade (i.e. Oliver in The Son and Rosetta in Rosetta). If you all at this forum want to see good cinema, The Dardennes are the way to go.

- L'enfant (2005) 5/5! - Powerful and realistic film about money, crime and punishment. Reminds me of La Promesse. One of the best releases I've seen from 2000-2006. Excellent plot too!

I recently saw Rosetta (1999), and thought that this could possibly give birth to a discussion.
I thought the film was good in that it reflected a certain realism and hard-hitting pessimism, although the Dardenne-brothers' technical approach didn't impress me. I can't stop thinking about how great this film could have been, had it only trusted the power that lies in the patient camera, in stead of the rapid, restless one. My mind comes to Kieslowski; the reason is, I see something incredibly warm (hidden behind all the coldness) and down-to-earth in Rosetta, that is some kind of similiar to what I see in, let's say, Bleu (1993). The thing is, for me, that while I genuinly admire the cinematography in Kieslowskis' low-voiced drama, the camerawork in Rosetta irritates the hell out of me. It's so sad, because it's definitively something both harrowing and beautiful in both of these films. What do you others think about these filmmakers?

I really need to see some of their films myself, I know so many people have told me about them, and how good they are. I am embarrassed by this, but I rented La Promesse and didn't get a chance to watch it before I [had to] gave it back. If anyone on here has seen any of their films, please tell me what I should see first. And is La Promesse one of their best?

Excellent, excellent filmmakers. L'Enfant is mindblowing and Le Fils was almost as good. I must see more from these men.
