I've been working on a movie recommendation experiment and I need some people to test it out on. All you have to do is list your Top 20 favorite films and 3 directors who possess a style that you particularly enjoy. If you can't come up with the directors, it's not that big a deal.

I don't know how many of these you've seen, but most are just randomly chosen based on the types of films in your Top 20:
BLACK NARCISSUS (1947) RIFIFI (1955) NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955) BLOWUP (1966) WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE (1974) DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1944) KWAIDAN (1964) EYES WITHOUT A FACE (1959) PERFORMANCE (1970) SANTA SANGRE (1989) THE COMPANY OF WOLVES (1984) THE FOUNTAIN (2006)
Let me know your thoughts. Based on the films in your Top 20, you appear to particularly like the following traits in films:
Atmospheric, Claustrophobic, Disturbing, Stylized, Tense, Meditative, Menacing, Paranoid, Somber, Sweeping, Visceral

This may take some work now that I have three more responses. I went through and determined the traits each of you appear to prefer in films, so now I just have to go do some research and I'll get back to you soon.
You seem to have a fairly specific focus when it comes to film traits:
Stylized, Austere, Atmospheric, Intimate, Talky
Here's the traits you seem to like most:
Atmospheric, Stylized, Sweeping, Forceful, Visceral, Tense, Cathartic, Menacing, Melancholy
These are the traits you seem to prefer:
Bleak, Quirky, Stylized, Atmospheric, Disturbing, Dreamlike, Enigmatic, Hallucinatory, Melancholy

Wow, cool. Here's some of my thoughts: BLACK NARCISSUS (1947) - I've seen it twice, and I absolutely LOVE the cinematography. It's just too sad that the the film content-wise doesn't appeal to me. A good film, but emotionally it doesn't "do" it for me. RIFIFI (1955) - Haven't seen it, but have heard good things about it. Going to check it out eventually. NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955) - Same here. Going to check it out quite soon, hopefully. BLOWUP (1966) - Nearly a masterpiece. A fantastic film. And yes, in some ways this can represent my taste in films. WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE (1974) - Not seen. I've only heard good things about it, though, so I should probably check it out. I'm not that into Asian cinema at the moment, though. But I'm open for anything, that's not the thing. DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1944) - I like film noir and I like Wilder. But this was rather dissapinting. Have to rewatch it, though, because it contains much of what I love in cinema. It was the content basically... The plot didn't fancy me that much. KWAIDAN (1964) - Not seen, but it looks interesting! EYES WITHOUT A FACE (1959) - Thanks for the recommendation. I read about it on imdb and it looks very interesting. Going to check this out for sure! PERFORMANCE (1970) - Haven't seen. SANTA SANGRE (1989) - Haven't seen anything by Jodorowsky, but his films looks very fascinating and atmospheric. THE COMPANY OF WOLVES (1984) - Hmm. Haven't seen this either. I'll check out more closely what this really is... THE FOUNTAIN (2006) - I have been looking forward to this.. Going to see it soon. The descriptions seem to suit quite well. I definitively go after atmosphere many times. Stylized, yes. I do like my films to be beautiful to look at. I particulary like static camera or slowly-sweeping camera movements. There are exeptions, as always, but basically I don't like the use of handheld camera, or what I like to call "shaky camera". I think it's also correct that I like intimate films, such as Bergmans (When I think about it, both Herzog and Scorsese manage to create this very intimate meeting with the protagonist). So, yeah, you've hit some of the right buttons... My admiration for Polanski is also visable in that I may tend to "enjoy" paranoia in films. I see that some of the others here has got their taste described with the word melancholy. I thought I was after that...

I like how this is going. I'll play ball with a formal Top 20 - all of which you can find at IMDB if you are unsure - and I'll give you a Top 10 for directors - because a Top 3 seems just a little too vague to go off of, but if that's all you need, then just cut off the rest:
Movies: 01. Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door 02. Beyond (short from the Animatrix) 03. The Seven Samurai 04. Spirited Away 05. American Beauty 06. Enter the Dragon 07. 7th Street 08. Noiseman Sound Insect 09. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 10. Grave of the Fireflies 11. The Fountain 12. Akira 13. Fight Club 14. The Long Goodbye 15. The Elephant Man 16. Harakiri 17. Pierrot le Fou 18. Jaws 19. Waking Life 20. Fargo
Directors: 01. Miyazaki Hayao 02. Morimoto Koji 03. Bruce Lee (why yes, he did actually direct things) 04. Kurosawa Akira 05. Park Chan-wook 06. Neill Blomkamp 07. The Coen Brothers 08. Jim Jarmusch 09. Watanabe Shinichiro 10. Jean-Luc Godard (only saw Pierrot le Fou, so I can't rank him too highly, you know?)

This is getting pretty challenging. I'm attempting to base the recommendations entirely on the most common movie traits that show up in your Top 20 lists while trying to avoid picking movies that are too well known. It is interesting to see the combinations of traits that emerge, though. Atmospheric and Stylized are by far the most common, though I do know of some people that don't prefer either based on their Top 20. I'm still streamlining the system, so I'm hoping to improve on it. Anyway:
(I didn't choose movies by directors that you picked because I assumed you already knew about them.)
CRITERIONMASTER Overall, the majority of the traits that showed up in your list were on the pensive side. You had very few happy or exciting traits. AUSTERE, ATMOSPHERIC, INTIMATE, STYLIZED & TALKY were your most common, and so that's what I based the following recommendations on primarily:
La Belle Noiseuse (1991), Imitation of Life (1959), Un Couer en Hiver (1992), Under the Sand (2000), In the Bedroom (2001), Badlands (1973), Tape (2001), La Notte (1960)
SACRILEGEND You appear to have a combination of unusual and depressing among your most common traits. BLEAK, QUIRKY & STYLIZED were your most common, with ATMOSPHERIC, DISTURBING, DREAMLIKE, ENIGMATIC, HALLUCINATORY & MELANCHOLY coming close behind. That one director, Emir Kusturica, seems to make upbeat films, though. Here's what I came up with:
The Reflecting Skin (1991), Paperhouse (1989), The Ruling Class (1972), Sweetie (1989), 3 Women (1977), Juliet of Spirits (1965), City of Lost Children (1995), Science of Sleep (2006)
WKW Your traits were overall mostly softhearted or thoughtful ones. I noticed that you have a crapload of Asian films, particularly from one director. However, I didn't really focus on Asian films for the recommendations because I was only using your most common traits to pick movies. You really seem to favor STYLIZED, though LYRICAL, MELANCHOLY, ATMOSPHERIC & REFLECTIVE are also high. ENIGMATIC & SWEEPING are somewhat high. My choices may seem odd, but I haven't come across your trait combination as of yet, so I'm working on it. Who knows, you may like these:
In the Mood for Love (2000), The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1970), Tokyo Godfather (2003), Children of Paradise (1945), Walkabout (1971), Earrings of Madame de... (1953), The Red Shoes (1948), Orpheus (1949)
ie (not IE) You didn't give me much to work with, really. The only traits that stood out were ATMOSPHERIC, STYLIZED, TENSE & VISCERAL, and they didn't stand out much. I'm having a rough go with your recommendations at the moment because you don't have a strong focus that I can determine as of yet. I may have to make the system a bit more complex just to accommodate people like yourself. Thanks for the incentive. At least you gave me a bunch of directors to get ideas from. I'll get back to yours soon.
CLARK NOVA You're big on ATMOSPHERE & STYLE. SWEEPING, FORCEFUL & VISCERAL were pretty high so I automatically wanted to choose visually impressive films with large scale battles. You also have TENSE, CATHARTIC, MENACING & MELANCHOLY, so that kind of makes me want to lean toward war as well. Ran almost fits your traits perfectly; I'm surprised it isn't your #1. Of course, so does Seven Samurai. Have you seen the Thin Red Line (1998)? I'm curious what your thoughts on it might be. It doesn't totally fit your traits, but it kind of does. Anyway, I'm still working on yours, but I should be done tonight sometime.
NONFICTION I'm working on yours, too.
Here's my Top 20 traits, for those who wish to compare:
HUMOROUS, ATMOSPHERIC, QUIRKY, SATIRICAL, IRREVERENT, VISCERAL, SEXUAL, FORCEFUL, DISTURBING, GOOFY

I may have to make the system a bit more complex just to accommodate people like yourself. Thanks for the incentive. At least you gave me a bunch of directors to get ideas from. I'll get back to yours soon. Thanks. The main thing about my Top 20 is that, to some degree, it includes many of my favorite movies of specific genres, like westerns, samurai, film noir, sci fi, horror, documentary, fighting/martial arts and et cetera. Still needs a bit of refining, but that's probably why it was so hard; I tried to make it as diverse as I could. ;D I think atmospheric and visceral are two traits I really like to see from movies, and stylized is good when it has other traits along with it. Good luck with that. Do you think giving you a Top 50 will help?

CLARK NOVA I tried some advanced techniques and came up with:
Once Upon A Time In China (1991), How the West Was Won (1962), Red River (1948), Django (1966), Mannaja (1977), The Emperor and the Assassin (1999), Temptress Moon (1996), Django, Kill (1967)
NONFICTION Well, STYLIZED is your big trait. You have DELIBERATE, LYRICAL, ENIGMATIC, HUMOROUS, MEDITATIVE, SOMBER, TENSE, URBANE & WISTFUL to a lesser degree. There aren't many aggressive or depresing traits in your Top 20. Your combination is kind of diverse, so I'm still trying to detrmine what direction to take. I should be done soon.
ie I don't know if trying to cover all the genres is the best route to go wwith in this case. If that really is the Top 20 that you believe reflects your true, personal movie tastes I'll go ahead and do something with it. Doing 50 movies might be overwhelming. It seems like 20 movies is enough for to see a pattern for most people, though 50 would certainly be thorough.
SACRILEGEND You might want to try Drowning By Numbers, too. It kind of fits your traits.

Actually, that's how I honestly want to run my Top 20. I'll give you a nifty fifty, though, for putting in so much effort, and for trying so very hard at this. (It's no problem for me to generate these lists, though. I've just been filling in the gaps with some of the extra movies that I've put into one slot.) I'd also really like to see what movies your movie system recommends for me. In part because I'd kind of like to see if you recommend movies I've already seen, but are lower on my list, so that I might consider raising them up. (Oh, and if it'll help, put a little more weight on the first two movies, Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door and Beyond. Those are my favorite feature length and short movie, respectively, been thoroughly tested too.) Movies:01. Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door 02. Beyond (short from the Animatrix) 03. The Seven Samurai 04. Spirited Away 05. American Beauty 06. Enter the Dragon 07. 7th Street 08. Noiseman Sound Insect 09. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 10. Grave of the Fireflies 11. The Fountain 12. Akira 13. Fight Club 14. The Long Goodbye 15. The Elephant Man 16. Harakiri 17. Pierrot le Fou 18. Jaws 19. Waking Life 20. Fargo 21. The Big Lebowski 22. Grave of the Fireflies 23. Howl's Moving Castle 24. Traffic 25. Ikiru 26. Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey with the Game of Death 27. Taxi Driver 28. City of God 29. Taste of Cherry 30. Being John Malkovich 31. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance 32. Ghost World 33. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope 34. Reservoir Dogs 35. Dirty Harry 36. La Jetée 37. The Seventh Seal 38. Wals voor de Storm 39. Kalifornia 40. Dreams 41. Beijing Bicycle 42. Raging Bull 43. Eureka 44. Night of the Living Dead 45. Harold and Maude 46. Dead Man 47. Bus 174 48. Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai 49. Le Samouraï 50. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within Some additional ones that kind of fell off the Top 50: On Your Mark, Dawn of the Dead, FFVII: Advent Children, Ong-bak, Yi Yi, Triplets of Belleville, Brick, Man Bites Dog, Kiss of the Dragon and the first Matrix movie. I'll leave it at that. Don't worry if it'll take you a while or whatever. I'm pretty busy myself, but managed to get a few days off. Phew, I miss the old days. (At least it's made me realize that I need watch as many movies as I can.)

Thanks for doing it. I think it is very cool to find this stuff out. Those traits sound about right, which is awesome. ‘Intimate’ is one of my favorite things, and I didn't even realize it till you pointed it out. I have only seen Badlands off that list and I fucking loved the hell out of it, definitely in my top 40 somewhere. As for the other movies there are a lot I haven't even heard of, so that is cool. I will make sure to try and watch the films and get back to you if they were good matches of what I enjoy in film.

NONFICTION OK, let's give these a go:
Diva (1981), All About Lily Chou-Chou (2001), Woman in the Dunes (1964), Seconds (1966), Onibaba (1964), The Limey (1999), Tampopo (1985)
ie I'll see what happens with 50. It'll be interesting to see if the same traits are still prominent.
PTAhole I'll get to work on yours.
WKW You might want to try My Life As A Dog (1985).
SACRILEGEND You might like Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970).
CLARK NOVA Maybe Soldier of Orange (1978) will appeal to you.
It looks like In the Bedroom and La Belle Noiseuse might be the closest match. You might want to give Before the Rain (1994) a try.

PTAHole
You have high ATMOSPHERIC & STYLIZED, as well as HUMOROUS, QUIRKY, MENACING, IRREVERENT, FANCIFUL, ROUSING, TENSE & VISCERAL to a lesser degree. Your traits tend to favor cool looking adventure-type films, but I tried to go in different directions for the sake of variety.
Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970), Forbidden Planet (1956), Road Warrior (1981), Boy and His Dog (1975), Shogun Assassin (1980), Excalibur (1981), Bob le Flambeur (1955), Near Dark (1987), Shock Corridor (1963), Rob Roy (1995), Cemetery Man (1994)
The Three Musketeers (1973) and The Four Musketeers (1975) might both appeal to you as well.

Don't forget, lordofdance, okay? You did say not to rush! Anyway, ATMOSPHERIC, STYLIZED & VISCERAL have reamined your biggest traits. In your case, even adding 30 movies didn't change very much. Don't worry, though, because I'm moving on to PHASE 2 and that might open up some new territory. If not, there's always PHASE 3. I'm going all out on this one. There should be results either today or tomorrow. BLACKMOSES & SAI Yours are on the way as well. I'm going to try out the advanced techniques I'm using for ie for both of you as well.

Oh yeah, sorry, I've been a bit out of it lately (and busier than the depths of hellllll). So, whenever is fine. I'm just kind of interested in what kind of movies come up as recommendations.

BLACKMOSES You have high STYLIZED, ATMOSPHERIC, QUIRKY & POIGNANT. I took a few movies off other people's lists that might appeal to you, so let's see what happens:
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001), World of Apu (1959), The Third Man (1949), Paris, Texas (1983), Pierrot Le Fou (1965), Twice Upon A Time (1983), King of Comedy (1983), Beauty and the Beast (1946), Irma Vep (1996), Every Man for Himself and God Against All (1974), A Canterbury Tale (1944), The Cave of the Silken Web (1967), Pather Panchali (1955)
Have you heard of the Bride Wore Black (1968) by Truffaut? You might like it.
Just curious, but do you like Wes Anderson at all? Based on your traits, it seems like you would.

I haven't heard of Bride Wore Black, but I will check it out. And yes, I do like Wes. I actually love him. Every film of his I give a ten except for Bottle Rocket, but i still like the movie. Rushmore is one of my favorite films ever, it was used to be in my top 20. Also, i can't wait to see some of those other films you recommended.
