That list is a joke, most of the films on there shouldn't be. American cinema is so bad recently that any movie that's remotely entertaining or better than the usual crap Hollywood dishes out will be on the top 250.

...And Knocked Up (2006) is at #204 and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) is at #230!
IMDB top 250 ain't what it used to be...

Hey, Knocked Up is a great movie. (I agree it shouldn't be on this type of list however) And Ratatouille was actually the best American animated movie I've seen in a long while (but it also shouldn't be on this list.) The thing is, some of the movies I argue against being on this list might be on my personal top 250, but the reason I object to them being on this list is that it is a list meant for someone that is just getting into movies. It's supposed to recommend great films for beginners to watch, and that should include very few films from the past five years. In ten years, if they stand the test of time, I would have no problem with Knocked Up or Ratatouille being on here, but now, they just came out in the past month. Give it time! (I even think more supposed "important" films from the past few years, such as Children of Men or Pan's Labyrinth should be given time. Knocked Up has no less value than these. I even gave it the same rating.)

I'm just kind of wondering... would the world stop for most movie buffs if the IMDB Top 250 were to be taken down? Sure seems like it.
If you guys all hate it so much, why do you religiously check it and think it's a scandal when a couple shitty movies get on there? There are already quite a few on there that I disapprove of, so I rarely bother with the list, but it seems like this has been the tenth time we've talked about this particular list. Just pointing out this in general, not trying to accuse anyone.

Just pointing out this in general, not trying to accuse anyone. i personally wouldn't mind if the list was taken down, or the rules of adding films to the list were changed. i don't actually check it that much. back in the day i used to use the list a lot to watch films, and use it to prove points like: "you don't like that film!? it is number blah blah blah on the top 250!" not really saying that makes it a masterpiece, i was just saying. but now i never use the list, and the only reason i noticed this was because my dad was looking at live free or die hard and saw that, and also i heard about some of those films being on there at loc forum. i get angry about the list only because it makes people think like these films are the best of the best, and i just get angry that so many people miss some great films, for all these newer films and stuff, and, if someone like me at a younger age, went to check out the list, they would be seeing a bunch of weaker films, instead of checking out much better films. you know what i am saying? that has to at least make you mad that people are using the list are checking out live free or die hard before seeing films like many on your list ( enter the dragon, waking life, and so many others). not to mention they might think these films are on par with the likes of seven samurai or something. i even went into best buy one time and they had a section called "imdb's top 250" with movies from the list that were for sale.

I don't really mind what people watch, but I've had a couple people tell me that they really liked my list and would be using it for future recommendations and rental suggestions, so I feel like I am a healthy alternative to the Internet Movie Data Base Top Two-Hundred and Fifty.
I'm really only pissed that the Seven Samurai isn't #7. Besides that, I don't give a damn if Live Free or Die Hard is hanging out on the same list as it and Ratatouille or 8.5.
