These are directors who have a style that I like, though I don't necessarily enjoy all their movies.
Robert Bresson Seijun Suzuki Jean-Luc Godard Russ Meyer David Lynch John Waters (the earlier part of his career) Sam Peckinpah Powell & Pressburger

New list. I have changed number one, but he could easily be number five or six. I just have really gotten back into his movies in the past few days:
1. Spielberg (Raiders of the Lost Ark) 2. Kurosawa (Seven Samurai) 3. Hitchcock (Rear Window) 4. Kubrick (2001) 5. Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke) 6. Scorsese (Taxi Driver) 7. Fincher (Fight Club) 8. Kieslowski (Camera Buff) 9. Peckinpah (The Wild Bunch) 10. Raimi (Army of Darkness)

Since everyone seems to be recycling the same list, I'm going to try to stray away from the more conventional picks. Except for Kubrick because Kubrick is King.
1. Stanley Kubrick 2. Terry Gilliam 3. Wes Anderson 4. Hayao Miyazaki 5. Chan-Wook Park 6. Michel Gondry 7. Alejandro González Iñárritu 8. Darren Aronofsky 9. Sofia Coppola 10. Todd Field
As I said before, I tried to stray away from picks like Kurosawa or Fellini so don't go crazy because I don't have the "textbook" directors on my list.

I like Terry Gilliam, he's okay.
And there must be some reason those directors are on everybody's lists, don't you think? Hmmm... They aren't clichèd on this forum for no reason, you know.

Cool list my friend, Miyazaki is amazing, and one of the best directors working today I would say. For some reason, people don't like Sofia Coppola that much around here, but I love her. Did you see Marie Antoinette? What did you think? And also, who the hell is Todd Field? I don't think I have heard of him.

He's the director of In the Bedroom and Little Children. He's probably more widely known as an actor but he his work as I director so far is spectacular. If you haven't seen In the Bedroom yet, I would highly recommend it. I have not seen Marie Antoinette, but I loved Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides. She is certainly an up-and-coming director to look out for.

Never really been a fan of Jarmusch. Coffee & Cigarettes was just horrible but Broken Flowers sort of redeemed him.

Coffee and Cigarettes was masterfully boring! It's on my list of favourite movies. I could just die after watching that movie and be happy forever. Here's my favourite scene - www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FYLkBcJBys ("I feel so divorced from the world...") I still need to watch Broken Flowers, but once I do, you guys'll be hearing much more from me!

Oh yeah, Jarmusch is continuing in quite the same mood/tone with Broken Flowers. In fact, it's my favorite of his. Just a fantastic film, and a relief from all the superficial garbage filling the cinemas nowdays.

I don't even think I know him as an actor, at least his name doesn't sound familiar, but I might. You should check out Marie Antoinette, even Sofia fans are split on it, although I loved it. I don't see how there is so much hate aimed at it, people just must be expecting something different. Which of her films do you like more, Virgin Suicides or Lost in Translation; I lean more towards Virgin Suicides myself.

Never really been a fan of Jarmusch. Coffee & Cigarettes was just horrible but Broken Flowers sort of redeemed him. Wow, I totally agree with you. I hated Coffee and Cigarettes, it was so unmemorable, yet I LOVED Broken Flowers. I really need to see more films from this man.

5. Luis BuñuelThe more I think about this man, the more I love him. I am going to try and see every single one of his films, sadly, so many aren't out on DVD. Criterion needs to release some more films from this man.
