I was thinking of hijacking the DVD Collections thread to ask this question, but hey, I'll ask it here.
Why do you collect DVDs?
I mean, sure, you like a movie. But why keep a copy around? Why not just rent it or put it in your Netflix queue once a year? Do you really need to have it on hand all the time?
I ask because I get some flack occasionally about this subject. For example, when I bought Raging Bull in class, after class I was talking with my techie buddies about what we were doing during class. One was doing advanced things not even I really understand, another was playing online games, I was buying DVDs. They were like "dude, you don't have to pay for movies." Then they started talking about how, if aliens invaded our planet, the spaceships going into outer space might not be able to hold my DVDs, or that the aliens would turn my DVDs into giant robots to attack me.
So, um, yeah. Besides, materialism isn't that great of a thing.
I have some of my own reasons, especially since my DVD collection has practically quadrupled since the beginning of the year, but I'd like to see what drives other people to spend their money on DVDs.

I like ownership. Simple as. I love being to open my cupboard and flick through a couple hundred movies and decide what I want to view.

I am trying to build a library of films, just like people do with books. So that I have tons of movies to choose from when I want to watch something. Also I like just having it in my hand, it feels special just to actually own the DVD.

couldn'tve said it better myself. I pretty much use karagarga to download a movie, and if i like it, i buy the dvd, even if it's a bare-bones release. I guess it just feels like cheating to just have something downloaded...and i do like the idea of having a physical library.

I like stuff. It's pretty much that simple. It's also why I buy CDs and LPs rather than downloading music. It's also fun to go round the dvd stores trying to find the oddities, the bargains and the rarities.

I don't... I don't have enough money. Yet. I can tell you that I'd really like to, because it's like a personal achievement just having them all. I'm a materialist, sorry. It's just cool owning so many stuff. And I can argue about just renting - sometimes you want to watch a movie, and you want to watch it NOW. It could also help you build an actual opinion on them, and be able to review them properly, your vision wouldn't become clouded with time. You could then watch it when, how, and as many times as you like.
Just wait 'til I start!

What's funner than that?

I love movies and I love DVD's. I just want to have that collection where people look at it and go, "Damn!"
