Oh God, I had to start this thread after remembering how many terrible DVD cases there are. Use this thread to talk about cases you hate, and ones you really like. I will start it off with the worst thing ever, the snapper case. I also call them "paper cases" sometimes. Anyone else fucking hate this? Do they have this over in region two? They are so stupid, why were they ever even made?

I hate the paper/snapper cases enough to have taken one and modified it, not to mention calling them shit cases from time to time. What I did was I took out the packaging on the back, put it in a standard (Amaray) DVD case and trimmed here and there until it fit. The packaging on the snapper cases are thicker than your standard DVD packaging paper, so it's not 100%, but it works well enough. Here's some more information. I hate these kinds of cases: I paid good money for my DVDs. I don't want them stored half-assed, just to pretend to save me space. But I do like the packaging for the Seven Samurai.

I know what you mean, I see that done at some used DVD places, where people had done that, and I thought about doing it myself, the only probably is that the inside normally has art on it, like the chapters or something, so when you put it as the cover the inside art is just covered up. Also, I am afraid I might just mess it up completely. I think I have gotten rid of most of mine (snapper cases that is), but might have a few still left. I even sometimes won't buy a DVD if it is in packaging like that (one time I passed up the Willy Wonka DVD because it was paper, and I knew I had seen a good case [same edition] somewhere). These can work, and they can not, it depends, that picture looks like the discs are very loose, the ones that overlap, which is a bad thing, because then the discs get so scratched and shit, but if they are sturdily in, then it can work. It is still a pain in the ass to get the disc underneath out. I got this kind of case for my Straw Dogs Criterion, even though the original case is actually one of those double-thick ones, so someone switched the cases, pisses me off.

What I did was I used an Exact-O knife to take apart the case. It's actually fairly easy to do, and the paper is just kind of folded over, so I cut out the inside insert, cut it around the edges a little bit, and it fit mostly perfect in the little booklet holder.
Nothing really to look at, but I'd take some photos if you're interested.

Yeah, or tell me which films you did it for. Do you have a lot of snapper cases?

I only did it with one case, that being the Rolling Stones' Bridges to Babylon concert DVD. I figured it would work out the best since it has a lot of black around the edges. I have about ten or so snapper cases, and since my experience with converting a snapper case DVD to an Amaray DVD case was not as positive as I would have liked (just didn't pay off as well), and since I don't have a bunch of Amaray DVD cases laying around, I haven't bothered converting the rest (to Agnosticism).

Yeah, if only Amaray cases were super easy to get. Or any cases. I would love to fix my Straw Dogs DVD with a double-thick case (or whatever they are called. Anyone know?). I do have a couple of empty cases, but most of them have slight problems with them, like little plastic rips.
Now we come to one of the worst things to happen to cases, when the plastic is all wrinkled, does anyone know what I am talking about? It happens most with Criterions! Why does it happen?

The best deal I was able to find on Amaray cases were in bulk. You'd have to get over 100 of them, but they'd be a quarter each. *shrug*
Just wait a couple years, I guess. CD jewel cases were once on the same boat as the Amaray cases, where they were kind of hard to come across, and now you can find them in your cereal, eatin' your chow.
Yeah, I hate that too. The plastic for the used DVDs I get are always more scuffed up than they well should have. While I'm sure there are standards for the quality of the plastic, maybe your sensitivity with high brow movies causes you to worry more about flawed plastic on your OOP copy of the Seven Samurai over your copy of Saw 1.
I hate the plastic locks on the Amaray cases. I do kind of like the idea of switching them around so I have the plastic lock cases on the movies I know aren't for most people / general audiences, but my fullscreen copy of Lost in Translation has those locks, whereas my widescreen copy doesn't.
I guess I'll try to take some pictures on Friday or something.
Also, how about those non-black Amaray cases? I love Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Grave of the Fireflies, and my favorite color is clear, but I'm not sure how I feel about their cases being clearish. It's also odd to me to see the red Amaray case for Night of the Living Dead.
It's funny that, it seems, the only difference between Bluray and HD-DVD cases are the color and that otherwise the packaging looks exactly the same.

Yeah, 100 of them would be a little too excessive, but maybe one day I will try that deal out or something, if I ever have that many things that need DVD cases. (might as well post the link, if you want) I just don't like when you hold it up in certain lights it just looks like complete shit. I would mind much less if it was for my copy of Saw or something, but I would still mind, just because I don't like any of my DVD's to look like crap, no matter the quality of the films. I fucking hate those little claps, my old Life Aquatic DVD was suppose to have those, I think, but they weren't there (can anyone who has the DVD help me out?). They were just like broken off, with an odd space there. Also, another one of my DVD's one of the things is broken off. Also, they seem so pointless, just an extra hassle to get open my DVD's. I would like to meet the guy who came up with that shit and kick him in the balls, seriously. I like the idea of a clear case because it gives more possibilities for having artwork on the backside of the cover, shown through. I am pretty sure Criterion is doing that with a lot of their DVD's and I am digging it. Different colored cases can work, and also not, but I do like the possibilities. My Night of the Living Dead looks amazing, well we have the same one probably, the red, I think, works really well. I think all the Millennium Editions have different colored cases, and they all work (Re-Animator very much, I Spit On Your Grave pretty well). I can't think of any that don't work now, but there are probably some. I know the Austin Powers films also do different colors.

It was a local sale through craigslist around six months ago, so finding and posting it would be useless. Here's the photos for the snapper to regular DVD conversion: fontinsidepaper thickness comparisonpart twoAs you can see, the paper for the snappers are thicker, and it's probably slightly ruining the Amaray case it's in, but it looks sexayur than the snapper case. Yeah, my Night of the Living Dead DVD is in a red Amaray case. I do see the point of the clear ones showing more content, like for Grave of the Fireflies, but it just looks a little odd to me. On the case itself, I don't really care for the little picture on the spine. Especially when the picture is either barely related to the movie ( Tokyo Godfather) or is a partial spoiler ( Dawn of the Dead, one-discer), as well as big logos (Miramax as one example) and such.

Oh, on the ones I see around people actually cut the paper to make it fit better, which would work in some cases, if the art didn't go all the way to the top or whatnot. Maybe, if I ever got a cheap one or something, and did take the case out, I would probably have to fix it up to make it look nicer. But it would pain me to have to cut the cover. I can see it looking odder, it does look a little weird on some things, but I like it a lot when I open it up, I just think the outside looks weird. Yeah, the spines of my DVD's are always a problem with me; I like them to look really good since that is how I display them. What irks me is when a DVD has like two sides, like for that Fox series of DVD's like Fight Club, it has two different sides, but I always use the side that is on the front, and never the side that the digipak slides out of, know what I mean? I hate having oddly shaped DVD's that don't fit the shelves too, like those Simpsons family head cases of something.

With box sets, I put them on my shelves the same way I do with books: spine out. Looks nicer. I can't remember too much else. Tired.
