Thread about the maker of some pretty good adaptations of literature, go! I thought the Shawshank Redemption was a good movie. I don't think it's exactly a Top 20 choice, but I could see why some people would rate it as such. The Green Mile was also a good movie. I haven't seen the Majestic, although I was interested in it when I heard about it. And, controversy abound, he's going to be doing a remake of Fahrenheit 451. Right away, I'll tell you to shut the fuck up about moaning over him doing a remake of a Truffaut movie. Especially the Truffaut part! I don't want to hear any bitching and moaning about this movie, now or around when it's being released. Darabont has proved himself to be a competent director, we would have something to worry about if an unknown director or a failure of a director came up with this. But I feel fully confident that he'll be able to handle the movie well. And as I've explained in the past, not all remakes are bad. So, further discussion of the works of Darabont, go! edit: Photo didn't work, so I uploaded it to ImageShack.

He's a good, clean director, but I find his films boring.

He's a good, clean director, but I find his films boring. That's a good way of putting it. He sticks to the basics, and his movies are a little on the long side, but I can get into them, so I like 'em well enough. Awww, I wanted to moan, but I guess I can't now, cause ie said so. Oh man! I'm glad my forewarning actually worked. ;D

Shawshank is one of my favorite films, but his other films are just fair. I am beginning to think that Shawshank was a fluke.

Care to explain what made his other movies - specifically the Green Mile - just fair? Without creating too much conflict?

To tell you the truth, The Green Mile was essentially a remake of Shawshank. A very similar story, kind, innocent man in jail for doing something he didn't do, and an exhasutive three hour running time. It plods, then plods some more turning what had been a great King book into a tiring depiction of filmmaking. The film also has too many characters who are underdeveloped when the book took their stories farther and made them more interesting. Overall, it was a terribly underwhelming experience coming from the man who made one of my favorite films of all time.
The Majestic was twice as bad as The Green Mile. Jim Carrey, in the lead role, struggles to keep the film afloat. Combine that with a cheesy story told a million times before and yet ANOTHER exhaustive two and a half hour running time, and you get bad moviemaking at its finest.

I just want to punch this guy in the face until it's a bloody pulp. Shawshank was a throwaway prison drama bogged down in excessive sentimentality and almost self-parodic Morgan Freeman narration. The Green Mile was truly awful, really one of the worst films I've ever seen, that tells a story that essentially rehashes Shawshank, but adds mixed morals and a ridiculous main character with a "heart of gold" that doesn't mind turning the occasional person into a vegetable., who also seems to suggest that all black people are slow and dopey. Also Tom Hanks is a fag.

I have seen Shawshank, overrated. But that Tom Hanks thing wasn't necessary. I don't like all the hate put on him, I personally like him. I find him hilarious on SNL episodes. And he has done some good things. People seem to hate him because he has won awards or something. I would like if you told me why he is a "fag,” which I am assuming means you don't like him as an actor, and not that he likes guys.

Well, since I've been able to get people to stop bitching about Darabont's remake, I'll use my awesome powers once again. You, the reader, are no longer allowed to use the word "fag." It will be erased from your lexicon, because it is a loaded term that can be very offensive to others, regardless of their sexual orientation. I liked the Shawshank Redemption and the Green Mile. Sure, movies like it might have been done before, but I liked both of those, so, you know, this is my united states of whatever.
