Daughters of Darkness is a vampire movie of the erotic/lesbian variety, though most of the vampirism and eroticism is rather subued. If a had to throw out some words to describe Daughters of Darkness, they would probably be "elegant", "seductive" and maybe "relaxed." There's a sleepy, smoldering kind of sensuality to this movie that held my interest even though there was very little action to move things along.
The story is propelled by a female vampire, Countess Bathory, who encounters a young couple at a hotel. She is immediately taken with their youthful beauty and sets out to seduce and corrupt them. The Countess has a jealous sidekick that spends most of her time moping around and looking pouty in a fashion model sort of way. She delivers her lines with a thick, dull accent.
The actress who plays the Countess, Delphine Seyrig, on the other hand, has this weird, blasé charisma. Throughout the movie it seems like she's about to fall asleep mid-sentence, as though her character has seduced so many young couples that she barely has to expend any energy to accomplish her evil goals anymore. I kept thinking that I should be bored listening to her talk, yet there was something intriguing about her laid back style. The whole movie is kind of like her performance.
As I said, Daughters of Darkness is a vampire movie, but in a very subdued manner. There are no fangs bared and very little blood drinking. There isn't any supernatural activity portrayed on screen. The eroticism is slightly more plentiful, and there is nudity here and there, but most of it is conveyed more through atmosphere than overtly shown on screen. Everything is so subdued in Daughters of Darkness that when violence actually does occur, it almost seems awkward and out of place. The last 20 minutes or half-hour is haphazard compared to the rest of the movie.
The performance of Delphine Seyrig is probaly what will carry this movie for most viewers. If the viewer isn't charmed or intrigued by her, then the movie will likely be boring or annoying. Daughters of Darkness is very arty in style and appearance, and I doubt many people who prefer traditional vampire movies will enjoy it. Personally, I was captivated just looking at the Countess and her sidekick's very red lips. Maybe I have a fetish.
Cruelty **
Grossness ** (very little blood for a vampire flick)
Overall Disturbing Content **
Nudity ***1/2
Film Quality ***1/2
