Well, this is the third Emanuelle movie starring Laura Gemser, otherwise known as Black Emanuelle, that I've seen. The first one I saw, Emanuelle In America, was pretty astounding. There were some things in that movie nobody should ever want to witness, yet it was surprisingly well-made. There's something to satisfy a wide range of sick minds, but at least it's aesthetically pleasing at times. The second, Sister Emanuelle, was much less disturbing. I was almost relieved at how pleasant it was by comparison. Sure, there weren't any jaw-droppingly obscene moments, but I was glad. I needed a rest after seeing such an unclean movie as Emanuelle In America. With Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals, I was brought back into the realm of nastiness. Not quite as far as Emanuelle In America took me, thank goodness, but far enough to feel a little uneasy.
This time around, world famous photo journalist Emanuelle goes on an expedition into the Amazon to find a tribe of cannibals that are supposedly extinct. She learns of the tribe while working undercover in an insane asylum where she encounters a woman who tries to eat one of the nurses. Being a curious reporter, Emanuelle attempts to question the cannibalistic patient by using a rather intimate interviewing style. It turns out the woman is too far gone to answer questions, but Emanuelle discovers a tribal tatoo near one of her private regions. Emanuelle proceeds to enlist the help of a professor at the Museum of Natural History to help her track down the tribe of cannibals, and off they go to the Amazon jungle. (Of course, this being an Emanuelle movie, she gets down with the professor before embarking for the Amazon.)
When her and the professor arrive, they end grouping with a nun, a big game hunter and his wife, and a few other people. I'd have to say that during the first 45 minutes, there are at least five scenes of a carnal nature and very little cannibal activity (except for when the woman tries to eat the nurse, which is kind of gross, and some old film footage). After that point, the movie starts to kick in to cannibal mode and gets pretty nasty. It's not on the level of Cannibal Holocaust or Cannibal Ferox, but there's a couple of intestine chewing scenes that aren't very appetizing. At one point, the cannibals cut somebody in half, but it's not all that impressive. (There is one killing where I thought a knife was going somewhere I didn't want it to go. I'm glad it didn't, but it's pretty close.)
As you might guess, most of the cast members end up dead. The ending isn't exactly thrilling, but at least I got to see Emanuelle blowing away cannibals with a shotgun while completely naked. She does her best work unclothed.
Cruelty ***1/2 (compared to other cannibal movies)
Grossness **** (intestines)
Overall Disturbing Content **** (smoking monkey)
Nudity ***** (it's an Emanuelle movie)
Film Quality *** (Don't ask me why. The nudity probably helped.)
