I like Miyazaki, but out of the three of his films that I've seen, I think Princess Mononoke is the weakest one. The main characters in it are really 'blah', plus the whole story is the least imaginative compared to Nausicaa and Spirited Away. It has neither the character development of Spirit Away nor the epic grandness of Nausicaa. i actually like it the most because it is more realistic, and definitely more graphic than the other miyazaki's i have seen (i think it got a pg-13 rating compared to pg). i think i tend to lean towards the more realistic or character driven animated films, so while i like the originality in the other films, they don't hit me as hard. i have to re-watch the film, though, before i can comment on the lead characters, but i remember liking them. Um, giant talking animals and slimy zombie making goo doesn't fit into my definition of 'realistic'. I don't think any of Miyazaki's films are meant to be realistic. So when I watch his work I tend to like more imaginative stories.

Yeah, Miyazaki is definitely more fantasy. Even Princess Mononoke. I've been thinking about this movie in comparison to Spirited Away, which really amazed me the first time I saw it, but I haven't a conclusion yet.

Yeah, Miyazaki is definitely more fantasy. Even Princess Mononoke. I've been thinking about this movie in comparison to Spirited Away, which really amazed me the first time I saw it, but I haven't a conclusion yet. spirited away definitely didn't impress me as much as princess mononoke. maybe because mononoke was my first, or whatever, but i just like it more. spirited away is wearing off me, which normally means i need to re-watch it.

oh man, you really must see princess mononoke next, or at least try to, it is my favorite i have seen from him. what do you mean you laughed at howl's moving castle for the "wrong reasons?" did you think it was terrible or something? There was just some aspects of Howl's that made me laugh/cringe, example - the "twist" at the end when the scarecrow thing suddenly turns into "the lost prince from the neighbouring country" or something... oh really? where the hell did that come from?? Plus another line, Howl says "Come with me." Which is met but an instant "K." Maybe thats just the english dubbing... But i did fnd it an enjoyable film!!!
