Hayao Miyazaki For most directors, we go with a standard headshot. But for The Man, we will roll with a more complete photograph. Discussion starts, now!

The best director currently working. He has never made a bad movie. The man makes movies that work for everybody (except beed...). Mainstream audiences, film snobs, etc.
RANK
1. Princess Mononoke 2. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind 3. My Neighbor, Totoro 4. Castle in the Sky 5. Kiki's Delivery Service 6. Spirited Away 7. Porco Rosso 8. Casle of Caliostro 9. Howl's Moving Castle
ALL stunning, wholly original works. Can't wait for his new film.

I rank mine:
1. Princess Mononoke 10/10 2. Spirited Away 10/10 3. Howl's Moving Castle 8/10
He is just a master, and I agree he is one of the best working today. But I don't feel he is better than Scorsese, as well as others. I love Howl's Moving Castle but it feels like something is missing, I don't know what, but something. Still a great film though.
Spirited Away is amazing, but for some reason didn't blow me away as much as Princess Mononoke did. I like how dark Mononoke is. But both films are outstanding though.

I have yet to see a movie that I think deserves less than 10/10 from Miyazaki. I cannot say that same thing about Scorsese, Kurosawa, Park, Bergman, Tarantino, Jarmusch or any other director.
1.) Spirited Away 2.) Grave of the Fireflies 3.) My Neighbor Totoro 4.) Howl's Moving Castle
Spirited Away blew me away like maybe one or two other movies have ever done. I don't really feel like explaining why exactly right now, but I could provide examples later.
Grave of the Fireflies impressed me because of how the story was told. It was also quite an emotional movie; I don't think you'll quite expect what will happen in Grave of the Fireflies, even if you know kind of what it's about.
I haven't seen My Neighbor Totoro in such a long time, but it still has this slice of paradise feeling that few directors show you, or want to show you. At least, without tainting it or making it seem less pure, because that's the ultra hip cool thing to do.
Howl's Moving Castle... well, I knew going in that the story wasn't going to be as great, but as just an experience - perhaps a visual experience - it was great. I suppose it could have used a bit more too it, but I thought it was great.

Grave of the Fireflies is just studio Ghilbi, not a Miyazaki film. Still want to see the film badly though.
I agree with your thoughts on Howl's Moving Castle, I didn't think the story was up to par, but the visuals, like in all Miyazaki I have seen is great.

Oh yeah. Oops. Sometimes I just mentally combine Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Perhaps our lists should be Studio Ghibli releases, just to be complete. Well, even though the movie was based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones, there are plenty of differences. Perhaps the movie would have had a stronger story if it had followed the novel, but as it is, I still thought the story was decent enough.

I was wondering if this film has anything to do with Ghibli, imdb.com/title/tt0095448/ ? Kimagure Orange Road: The Movie, it is directed by Mochizuki and came up on my Flixster so I was wondering if I "want to see it." Even if the movie is no good, if it has anything to do with Ghibli I will see it.

I have not seen it personally, but it would fall under the "made by people involved with Ghibli, but not Ghibli" section. Here go to this site: nausicaa.net it will help you very much.

Ohhh, by the way, I watched Princess Mononoke this afternoon, and I have to share my thoughts. Now, I've never really been intrigued by anime movies, but luckily the only two films of this genre that I've seen have blown me away. It's the most luscious, beautiful, rich, expansive, just totally amazing animation film I've ever seen. I remember (if correctly, I'm not so sure) that it was on your list of "not see yet". If you still haven't, do so. Immediately. I'll respond to this here. I don't watch Miyazaki movies that often because whenever I see one of his movies, everything else just seems dull in comparison. They are just so visually perfect. ... I also haven't had the opportunity to watch Princess Mononoke yet, short of buying it. I should just go ahead and buy it... oh well.

Censor your culturization. I watched it with an irritating seven-year-old taunting me, saying that he was going to press eject on the dvd-player, and doing 60's dances in front of the screen. I almost killed him!

The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)Miyazaki made this film based on the Lupin III television series he worked on. Because of this, it's obviously least original of his movies, but that doesn't mean it isn't excellent. A brilliant caper film, The Castle of Cagliostro just has fun with its characters and situations. It's certainly the funniest of Miyazaki's work, and that may be what makes it so memorable. Nausicaa (1984)Miyazaki's brilliant second film almost didn't get made. When the idea was pitched to Japanese studios, they wouldn't make an animated film if it wasn't based on a popular manga (comicbook). So, Miyazaki had to create a manga series. It became popular, so he stopped it for a while to create the film, and what a film it is! Unlike The Castle of Cagliostro, Nausicaa showed Miyazaki's talent for creating beautiful and creative worlds. The animation flows with masterful fluidity. The magical feel of this film is what set up the "formula" (and I do mean the loosest definition of that word) Miyazaki continues to to use today. Castle in the Sky (1986)People overuse the term "movie magic." For some (including me), it's Star Wars, for others, it's David Lynch. For me, the best example of this trite term is a Hayao Miyazaki film, and this is where I think that begins in his movies. The film has so many moments that make you smile. Miyazaki toned down his enviornmental themes for this movie, but they are still present, as they are in many of his films. This is a classic adventure movie in every sense of the word. It has that sense of majesty that is rarely found in films anymore. It celebrates the concept of good and evil, which isn't necessarily present in Miyazaki's other films. My Neighbor Totoro(1987)After three action-adventure movies, Miyazaki took a step back and made a film about children dealing with their ailing mother. In a way, this works as a more fantastical, optimistic companion piece to Isao Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies. Wheather Totoro or the Catbus are real or not is left up to the viewer. Just like Grave of the Fireflies, you can't help but feel for these characters. Unlike Grave of the Fireflies, Miyazaki made the smart choice to give his film an optimistic tone, and most importantly, keep that tone consistant throughout the film, even to the very end. Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)With this film, Miyazaki further lightened the tone from his previous movies. Unlike his earlier work, not much happens in this film. It is really a coming-of-age film. The movie is idealistic to the core. The biggest problem faced in the film is Kiki's loss of her witch powers, which winds up teaching her even more. The only reality that Miyazaki concerns himself with in this movie is the reality of growing up and realizing who you are. Porco Rosso (1992)Porco Rosso is the only "talking animal" movie Miyazaki has made. The use of that term is a stretch, however, as only the main character is an animal. Porco Rosso is a classic Hollywood romance movie. The main character is a pig, but you could easily picture him as Bogart. It's one of Miyazaki's most fun movies, and it takes its concept and runs with it. Princess Mononoke (1997)Miyazaki took five years off to create his true masterpiece. Princess Mononoke returns to Nausicaa's dark enviornmental themes, as well as its epic scope. This is a film Miyazaki may never topple for its sheer breathtaking visuals, themes, and creativity. Ashitaka rides through the forrest as evil overtakes him, while he overtakes that very evil. Miyazaki's characters, story, and animation are at their most complex, and at their best here. Spirited Away (2001)Sprited Away is often cited as Miyazaki's best work, but, while I feel it is a brilliant film, I do think it may be a bit overrated. Regardless of the critical reception, Sprited Away is still the work of a filmmaker at his best. Flowing with imagination and vitality, Miyazaki injects this film with a richness that is all its own. Every frame cramms so much on screen that it's nearly impossible to catch everything the first time. It's the perfect movie to watch over and over again. Howl's Moving Castle (2004)Many, including myself, expected Miyazaki to continue with the epic nature found in his previous two outings, Princess Mononokeand Spirited Away, but he chose to return to his more "European" setting found in Kiki's Delivery Service and Porco Rosso, with a simpler story that fits more with that era of his career than the current one. While still one of Miyazaki's lesser efforts, Howl's Moving Castle represents an extremely entertaining and beautiful two hours of entertainment. Ranking1. Princess Mononoke2. Nausicaa3. My Neighbor Totoro4. Castle in the Sky5. Kiki's Delivery Service6. Spirited Away7. Porco Rosso8. Howl's Moving Castle9. The Castle of Cagliostro

My rankings: 1. Spirited Away 2. Princess Mononoke 3. My Neighbor Totoro 4. Kiki's Delivery Service All tens, and all are masterpieces! To reiterate, could you elaborate? I spent two hours working on that post, in hopes that you (and others who have seen any of his work) would comment. Even what wkw did was fine, he made a couple comments. Just kind of wanted to discuss his stuff with somebody who actually has an informed opinion of him (unlike beed).

Miyazaki is probably one of my top 3 favorite directors. He always leaves me overwhelmed and speechless. All his films (out of what I have seen) have such an incredible beauty and such a big impact on me. His storytelling is amazing. I can't wait to see more of his films.
Spirited Away is one of the most perfect films I have ever seen. There wasn't a single part in the whole film that wasn't stunning. It is filled with magic and classic Mayazaki brilliance. Every character is so loveable and imaginative. The feelings I get while watching this movie are so mind-blowing I can't even describe them. The movie is just filled with such astonishing animation and detailed creation, its amazes me. This film is really a movie I will never forget and has touched me probably more then almost any other film. I can't believe you think this is overrated, ptahole. I think the film has the right to all of the praise that it has received and should get even more praise because of how great it is. But you still give it a ten so it's alright and you only think it is slightly overrated.
I will say something about his other films some other time.

I haven't been able to check out any of these yet, but I doubt I'll have to "test" to see if I'll like any of Miyazaki's work, so I should be fine. Here's some Miyazaki news. I couldn't find that Untitled Miyazaki thread, so here goes: Hayao Miyazaki's new movie title is revealedPonyo On A CliffFor purists, that's Gake no ue no Ponyo, who would already know how to pronounce it, but here it is anyways: gah-keh no oo-eh no poh-n-yo. Not much information on the movie has surfaced besides the GhibliWorld website, and Google only occasionally gives ten results to the title, but at least it isn't Wikipedia, huh? Also, the tentative release date is Summer 2008.

[glow=red,2,300]My favourite has to be Spirited Away, just the most creative and endearing story really. The only other's i've seen... Howl's Moving Castle, which i found hillarious but for the wrong reasons Porco Rosso, which wasn't as interesting because it wasn't as magical as the others, and My Neighbour Totoro, which was hyped up by my friends and i ended up really disappointed any way thats my "musings" into Miyazaki, I really do want to see more... I'll keep ya all posted, and i know you won't be able to wait ;D[/glow]
