Frank Zappa I figured we should have some sort of Frank Zappa thread. Zappa is good, this forum is good, therefore, a merger of two goods should be good. Of Zappa's extensive discography, I've really only heard the following albums, with some songs aside: Freak Out!, Jazz From Hell and One Size Fits All. Zappa's sense of humor doesn't strictly appeal to me, but he creates really great music. My next Zappa album will probably be the Yellow Shark, which sounds like it's awesome, although I may end up watching 200 Motels first. Also, I've been trying to get Agent Knight to listen to Freak Out!, in part because one of his favorite movies stole its title from the album in question, so, you know, he'd probably like it. Want to try to convince him to at least listen to Trouble Every Day, if not the whole album, if not his whole discography?

I have heard a ton of Zappa, including some of his extensive solos that he recorded at his house studio over the years. Zappa was the best type of musicians, totally talented and totally resilient to the outside music business. He did what he wanted when he wanted and took shit from no one. And I respect him and love him for that.

Oh yeah, I've listened to Hot Rats quite a few times, but since I don't own it, I didn't consider it.

One of my favorite musicians, he's so crazy that guy. I actually watched a documentary on the guy last friday.
Here's my five favorite albums from Zappa:
1. Hot Rats (one of my top 10 favs! The first Zappa I bought.) 2. Freak Out! 3. Apostrophe (') 4. Sheik Yerbouti 5. We're Only In It For The Money
These are the records I've closest relationship with, I'm not that familiar with his other works.

I just listened to Joe's Garage again yesterday. Man, that record is a masterpiece. Its seriously the perfect balance between humor and excellent music.

Apostrophe (*) might be one of Zappa's best records. So many classics on it, Cosmik Debris has some blistering guitar on it and the Nanook suite is superb. Top 5 go as follows: 1. Hot Rats 2. The Grand Wazoo 3. Freak Out! 4. Joe's Garage 5. (Tie) Apostrophe, Shut Up 'N Play Y'er Guitar, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, and We're Only in It for the Money

Someone, tell me what songs I should check out from him. I was going to download some of his stuff, but don't know which songs to start out with. What songs would be good at introducing him to me?

Apostrophe is where to start since you are not a big fan of jazz. Just look at the tracklist from that record and download all those songs...

I've only listened to this compilation disk called Cheap Thrills, this is the track listing:
I Could Be a Star Now Catholic Girls [Live] Bobby Brown Goes Down [Live] You Are What You Is We Are Not Alone Cheap Thrills Mudshark Interview Hot Plate Heaven at the Green Hotel Zomby Woof [Live] Torture Never Stops [Original Version] Joe's Garage [Live] My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama [Live] Going for the Money
Basically I was very amused by the music, and I intend to listen to more from him.

^Some of his music is amusing, but a lot of it is musically complex and thoughtful.
