Robert Nesta "Bob" Marley OM (February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981) was a Jamaican singer, songwriter, guitarist, and political activist. He is the most widely known performer of reggae music, and is famous for popularising the genre outside Jamaica. A faithful Rastafari, Marley is regarded by many as a prophet of the religion. Marley is best known for his reggae songs, which include the hits "I Shot the Sheriff", "No Woman, No Cry", "Three Little Birds", "Exodus", "Could You Be Loved", "Jamming", "Redemption Song", and "One Love". His posthumous compilation album Legend (1984) is the best-selling reggae album ever, with sales of more than 12 million copies. Bob Marley was a member of the Rastafari movement, whose culture was a key element in the development of reggae. Bob Marley became the leading proponent of the Rastafari, taking their music out of the socially deprived areas of Jamaica and onto the international music scene. Now considered a "Rasta" legend, Marley's adoption of the characteristic Rastafari dreadlocks and famous use of cannabis as a sacred sacrament in the late sixties were an integral part of his persona. He is said to have entered every performance proclaiming the divinity of Jah Rastafari. Many of Marley's songs contained Biblical references, sometimes using wordplay to fuse activism and religion, as in "Revolution" and "Revelation": “Revelation reveals the truth...” “It takes a revolution to make a solution...”

I love him. Not because he smokes pot or any of the other stuff that glorifies him to today's generation. But because he was a genuine musician who lived the way he sang. He lived in his native country, with others around him, and he never gave in to riches. Plus, his music is alternately happy and sad. Showing how full of life he was but also how troubled he was inside. Great musician.

I know, I hate how people have that image of him in that green/yellow/red combination thing with dagga-leaves everywhere, from pencil-cases to shirts to sweatbands to their screensavers, and when you ask them if they even know wo it is, they don't. And the 7.53% of people who do know who he is, haven't ever heard one of his songs.
I like him too, I'm just getting into African Herbsman and Burnin'.

I was just about to come in here complaining about what you two beat me to. I mean, what the fuck?! People seem to forget that he was even a musician/singer, and all people seem to know about him is he smokes weed. 3/4ths of the people I see with his stuff on, I know for a fact would hate his music, it is not at all like rap. If they even know he is reggae they probably think he is like that reggaeton (sp?) shit, like Sean Paul. God!
I might call him slightly overrated, but that is only because I am an idiot and haven't bought his albums yet. "No Woman, No Cry" is top 50 songs ever, easily though. It can move me to tears at one moment; the emotion that goes into the song just makes it musical perfection. I doubt anyone would deny it.
When I see people who have no idea who he is, or what he sings, I want to slap myself and/or kill the person. This, like I said a long time ago, is one of the instances I was talking about, about people wearing clothes with someone on them, yet not having a clue who they are. Might as well ask the question of which song of his is your favorite? If it is “No Woman, No Cry” please list a second one.

No Woman No Cry is my favorite track. Coming in second is either Three Little Birds or Redemption Song. I encourage you to check out his records, especially Exodus or even the greatest hits package Legend. There are a ton of Marley Cd's out there because of his popularity with the young generation. But most of them are second rate crap that shouldn't have been brought out of the studio vault. Instead of wading through that stuff, stick to the official releases. You won't be let down, Bob is a true genius.
