Even though very few read comics here, I figured I should make a formal recommendation for this fantastic series. It's created by Bill Willingham (whose previous work includes an excellent superhero book, Elementals.) It centers around fairy tale characters who have been run out of their homelands by a mysterious force known as "The Adversary," and now live in modern day New York City. It can be detective story, political drama, romance, and high fantasy. One of the absolute best comics being published today.
There are ten books so far: Volume 1- Legends in Exile Volume 2- Animal Farm Volume 3- Storybook Love Volume 4- March of the Wooden Soldiers Volume 5- The Mean Seasons Volume 6- Homelands Volume 7- Arabian Nights (And Days) Volume 8- Wolves Volume 9- Sons of Empire Volume 10- The Good Prince
There is also a standalone book called Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall, which is an excellent short story anthology that gives a lot of good background on the characters. There's a spinoff called Jack of Fables, which focuses on Jack (of Beanstalk, candlestick, ...and Jill fame) after he departs from the main series. There are two volumes so far: Volume 1- The (Nearly) Great Escape Volume 2- Jack of Hearts
It's really an excellent series, and if you have any interest in comics at all, this would be a good place to start. All the books are available at large chain book stores.

I'm getting into comics more, in no small part because I don't have to sit through 70 minutes of some bastardchildauteur make "feels" to make up for his small dick, so this is perfectly relevant to my Internets. I might need to start out with something small, though. Transmetropolitan was pure binge. The most awesome kind of binge, however. Got any one-off recommendations or shit I won't feel the complusive urge to spend hours on end reading?

Hmm. Check out Demo by Brian Wood, excellent graphic novel. Any of the Flight anthologies are good for good for short stories. Scott Pilgrim is a pretty short series, well worth your time. Anything by Daniel Clowes or Chris Ware. Bone is my favorite series, but it's pretty long. (It is available in one book, though.) I also am quite a big fan of Hope Larson. Normally I find the term "visual poetry" to be off-putting, but it's pretty much the only way to describe her stuff. This is kinda slapdash, but there's some recommendations for you.

I'd proabably be really into comics if they didn't all sell for about $40 a pop over here, for some 30 pages b&w ones....
