UA Gives Green Light to Bryan Singer Thriller Source: Variety March 14, 2007
United Artists' Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner have greenlit their second film, an original thriller that Bryan Singer will direct as his next feature, reports Variety.
The untitled film re-teams Singer with The Usual Suspects screenwriter Chris McQuarrie. Singer and McQuarrie will produce.
Set in WWII, the project is similar to "Suspects" in that it is a multi-character ensemble piece.
Singer and McQuarrie took the project directly to Wagner and Cruise, who agreed to finance it almost immediately.
The film will delay Warner Bros.' hope of mounting a sequel to Superman Returns in the near future, adds the trade. Singer's Bad Hat Harry production company has an overall deal at WB, where he is developing several films that include that sequel and the Harvey Milk biopic The Mayor of Castro Street. Singer is also directing "Football Wives," a series pilot for ABC and ABC TV Studio.
The new project begins production this summer.

In enjoyed both X-Mens, Superman, and the Usual Suspects. Apt Pupil was very eh. He is a very good new director and I will see anything he directs.

Singer enlists Cruise for UA WWII thriller By Borys Kit - The Hollywood Reporter March 21, 2007
Tom Cruise is set to star in Bryan Singer's untitled United Artists project scripted by Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander. Singer and McQuarrie, who most recently teamed to make the award-winning thriller "The Usual Suspects," are producing.
The untitled thriller is based on actual events and depicts an attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler at the height of World War II.
Cruise did not intend to star in the project, which was acquired last week by UA only as a production. However, during subsequent meetings, Singer became intrigued by the notion of Cruise as a central figure in the story and offered Cruise the role. Cruise signed on Tuesday.
"After reading the script, Tom and I knew immediately that this was a film that we had to make," UA CEO Paula Wagner said. "As an added bonus, because of Bryan Singer's involvement and Tom's admiration for him as a filmmaker, as well as the excellence of the script, the project attracted Tom as an actor. I cannot think of a more perfect combination of creative elements for our second production."
Production is scheduled to begin early this summer. MGM will distribute.
Contrary to earlier reports, the filmmakers are saying the untitled project should not interfere with Singer's mounting of a sequel to "Superman Returns" for Warner Bros. Pictures early next year.
The project marks the second production to be greenlighted under the new UA regime. Production is under way on its inaugural film, "Lions for Lambs," directed by Robert Redford and starring Redford, Meryl Streep and Cruise. "Lambs" is scheduled for release Nov. 9.

Don't you just love it when they don't get their details right? Singer and McQuarrie, who most recently teamed to make the award-winning thriller "The Usual Suspects," I don't think the word "recent" could be applied to a movie that's over ten years old.
