I`m reading Bone for the moment, actually (God, it`s lenghty), borrowed it by a friend of mine. Hope I get finished before he asks to get it back. . But it`s great fun, has some layers, quite interesting stuff really. Me like. Adventurous and funny. Recommended!

This is so pointless, but I'm bored and have nothing to do at the moment. Here's some of my current favorite comics. Feel free to ignore this. Cerebus by Dave Sim - Massive, 6000 page, 26 year, 300 issue epic, telling the story of an amoral, pompous aardvark. At different points in his life, he is prime minister, pope, and barbarian. It really is a phenomenal work. The Sandman by Neil Gaiman- Gaiman is one of my favorite writers, and this is his best work. "The Sound of Her Wings," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Calliope," are excellent short stories, and "The Doll's House," "A Game of You," and "The Wake" are some of the medium's highest points in serialized storytelling. Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O'Malley- Truly the most I've related to a fictional work, possibly ever. Hysterical, outlandish, and heartfelt. Bone by Jeff Smith- Just amazing. How one can combine comic strips like Peanuts and Pogo and high fantasy so perfectly is a mystery only Jeff Smith knows. Maus by Art Speigelman- There's no comic that has done more for the medium than this. It won a friggin' Pulitzer Prize. I adore it. From Hell by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neil- I go back and forth between this, Watchmen, Swamp Thing, and Legue of Extraordinary Gentlemen as to what is my favorite Alan Moore comic, but this book is so dense, and filled with amazing writing. It's pretty hard to pick the other stuff over it. Daredevil: Born Again by Frank Miller- I had to mention a Frank Miller book, and while Sin City and Dark Knight Returns are excellent, this book often gets overlooked. Miller rocketed Daredevil from one of Stan Lee's second tier creations to one of the greatest superhero books ever. Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Waterson- Easily the best comic strip ever, consistantly hilarious and brilliant.
Bah. Sorry about that. I look at some of these early posts from a couple years ago (such as this thread) and I sound like such an ass. I needed to correct my list. Sorry if you read through that.

Marvel Zombies is turning out well. I'm not sure if I like talking zombies, but one result of that was really cool: (minor spolaaar) a zombie perserving a human so its food source wouldn't run out. Genius!

Yeah, Cerebus is fantastic. The first book might not seem amazing, but if you hang in there for High Society (book two), you'll be amazed. The book went from Conan parody to political, religious, and philisophical commentary by issue 25. The series has its ups (High Society, Church and State, Jaka's Story, The Last Day) and downs (Reads, which contains Sim's infamous misoginistic rant), but it's one of the most interesting comics ever published.
Marvel Zomibies is pretty fun, but I didn't like the second series too much. The gimmick just kind of wore thin. You should check out The Walking Dead, since Kirkman also writes that book, and it's a far more interesting zombie story.
Andrew, have you read Love and Rockets? Great stuff, I think you'd dig it.

Tim, you gotta check out Silver Surfer: Requiem (use the CDisplay Sequential Image Viewer to view it; full screen but you'll get used to it just fine). This comic, albeit a four-part one-off, is simply the best comic I've ever read; truly transcendent. And Spider-Man has black eyes. Black! I also recommend it for everyone else as well. No knowledge of Silver Surfer required.

1. Silver Surfer: Requiem 2. Watchmen 3. Transmetropolitan 4. Sandman: Dream Hunters
I picked up Maus II a little while ago for 50 cents.
I still have your old recommendation list, Tim. I've been more interested in books and comics lately, but I'm still easing in to the serials by checking out the collections at my library first.

You can't really read Maus II without the first one. I know, and that's why I pissed I didn't see Maus I for the same price. I may just end up downloading both parts here shortly, since I just finished reading Waltz for Bashir and guess what it name dropped on the back cover? Maus. Also, outside of your avatar/signature, I've seen a little bit of Scott Pilgrim's work and I'm a little curious. Can you provide one entry point into his work? I want to see how it's like, but I have a new job coming up, so my free time will soon be close to nothing, so I can't be bothered to read an entire anthology of work. (Which is why I never checked out Calvin and Hobbes at length.)

You can read the first twenty pages or so at scottpilgrim.com under the preview section. And Scott Pilgrim isn't an anthology, it's a series. There are currently five books, and there will be one more. Each book is about twelve dollars.

I'll try to check it out sometime soon. We'll see how that turns out, though.
