Well, some of those bands were probably inspired by punk rock music. I'm not to be bothered to research them, but I'm sure half of those cite either Nirvana or Tool as an influence, because that's what modern bands these days do: copy either Nirvana and Tool. If you get something like 25% Nirvana and 75% Tool, you get more new stuff like Chevelle and stuff, whereas if they go 75% Nirvana and 25% Tool, you get more poppy rock music like Yellowcard I guess. I didn't put too much part into the influenced bands part, but you know, it's not to say that some bands didn't get outside influences like Queen, Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd, but you can practically hear the plagiarism of Nirvana and Tool from most modern bands. Now, Nirvana has obvious punk influences. No argument. Tool, not so obvious, but if we allow metal and punk to co-exist, then you know, some of that same rebellious spirit and their earlier material I guess could be considered punk if you don't want to be too nitpicky. Just go with me, alright? Therefore, most of these bands have punk in their blood, but would be stomped alive by any real punk band. But hey, whatever gets you going is fine by me. BarrSnacks, I'm not here to tell you to go listen to the Dead Kennedys, re-shape your musical interests, or make you feel bad for your musical interests, I guess I'm just stepping in to give a slightly more reasonable answer.

If I had to choose some Punk songs that I really liked, I'd go with:
Borstal Breakout - SHAM 69 People Who Died - JIM CARROLL I Get Along - THE LIBERTINES TV Party - BLACK FLAG Astro Zombies - MISFITS Bikini Girls With Machine Guns - THE CRAMPS
I used to own Frankenchrist by the Dead Kennedys, and I probably listened to that about a hundred times. Stars and Stripes of Corruption, MTV Get Off the Air, Soup Is Good Food, Jock-o-Rama, and A Growing Boy Needs His Lunch were all favorites at one time or another. I still like the lyric, "I wonder, will Elvis take the place of Jesus in a thousand years?"

Anyone on here dig some Rancid? And lordofdance, nice choices, I like anyone who respects some Black Flag.
And ie, almost all the bands now can be traced to the punk genre, since it left such a mark. Most all poppy rock bands, emo bands, etc. have definitely ripped off punk bands. Nirvana definitely was influenced by some of that stuff I am sure, although they might not sound like it. Not sure of their real influences, but there are many bands that did stuff they did, before them, in some ways, the same could be said for almost all bands.

Nirvana were probably a little bit influenced by bands like the germs and mudhoney. Also, more obscurely sonic youth and even U2. Read the biography on Cobain, Heavier than heaven. Its a fascinating read and great insight into the workings and rise of Nirvana and Kurts spiralling drug addiction.

Kurt Cobain said himself that Nirvana's music was most influenced by the Meat Puppets, The Beatles, and the Pixies.

Am I missing something or are the Violent Femmes not punk? Im in fucking love with their debut, have listened to it countless times. Haven't heard any of their other music, but their debut is becomming one of my favorite albums of all time very quickly. Also yea, the Pixies are so fucking sick. I got Doolittle and its omg awesome. Whats the name of the song at the end of fight club? Thats my favorite pixie song so far.

The song at the end of Fight Club is "Where Is My Mind?" which is on Surfer Rosa, I think. It is one of their best songs, in my opinion. There are definitely some fans of the Violent Femmes, but not a huge amount. They are one of my favorite bands though; I listen to them all the time. Their debut is fucking amazing, and some of their other work is good, but nothing as good as their debut, although there are some songs you should check out. I have their "Greatest Hits" album, along with a downloaded debut. They just have such an original sound, it mixes between like rock, pop, country, punk, Christian, etc.
Tracklist of that greatest hits album, Add It Up:
1 Intro 0:15 2 Waiting for the Bus 2:07 3 Blister in the Sun 2:24 4 Gone Daddy Gone 3:05 5 Gordon's Message 0:27 6 Gimme the Car 5:05 7 Country Death Song 5:02 8 Black Girls 5:41 9 Jesus Walking on the Water 3:06 10 36-24-36 1:48 11 I Held Her in My Arms 3:01 12 I Hate the TV 2:10 13 America Is 2:10 14 Old Mother Reagan 0:31 15 Degradation 0:35 16 Dance, Motherfucker, Dance! 3:17 17 Lies 5:49 18 American Music 3:50 19 Out the Window 2:52 20 Kiss Off 4:59 21 Add It Up 6:14 22 Vancouver 2:14 23 Johnny
Download all those songs you haven't already heard. All of them are amazing, you should love them all.

Some great hardcore bands I have been listening to, that everyone should check out. These bands were around the time of, and some even before, Black Flag and Dead Kennedy's, so if you like either of them, you will probably dig this. Bad Brains is an insane hardcore band, who later went reggae. Circle Jerks Cro-Mags Minor Threat Download some of their stuff, then tell me what you think.

I like all the bands there (except Cro-Mags) but the best is Bad Brains by far. I only like them with H.R though. They sided as a reggae band too. Such talented guys. Original hardcore punk bands are awesome.

Exploding Hearts. Oh my God, if you haven't heard this band, please, please, please check them out. They are so good; they are a pop/punk band that could have so easily came straight out of the 70's. Their one album, "Guitar Romantic," is perfect. Check out the song "I'm a Pretender" and try and tell me it isn't fun as hell. I can't believe they died in a car crash after the album came out; they were really a band I would have looked out for.
