There should be a definite list at the end of the year. Anyways, I've said it before, I'll say it now: 10,000 Days was disappointing to me. Even with the cool packaging, I just couldn't see buying it. Didn't really get into the Eraser. I think I only bought two albums this year. The one that was released in 2006 was the Mars Volta's Amputecture. Shit, why buy an audio experience for $14, when you could buy an audio/visual experience for $14? (If we exclude the goodies from the pawn shop. ) Sure, some CDs are starting to get into the $10 range, but too bad that was after I bought a bulk of my collection. edit: The Information by Beck is really starting to grow on me, though. I may actually buy it. footnote: And as a fan of the Decemberists, the Crane Wife might be a good album too.

In order:
The Crane Wife by the Decemberists Amputecture by the Mars Volta The Information by Beck The Eraser by Thom Yorke 10,000 Days by Tool
In an amazing upset, one which the world has yet to see, I enjoyed an album this year more than the Mars Volta's latest effort.
How is this possible?
Well, historically, the Mars Volta sounded like they were going off in this amazing direction, one where they'd leave the world behind and just kick ass on their own terms. Amputecture just sounded like they regressed a little bit. It was like the Mars Volta of the future collaborated with At The Drive-In, and the result was not quite as good as what I had hoped for. Hopefully this isn't a trend where the Mars Volta no longer make innovative and important music. (I don't think they sold out, or any shit like that. Amputecture was just less interesting and innovative to me than their previous albums.)
I've been listening to a lot of albums by the Decemberists lately. They're all about the same, but they have this nice feeling, and select songs do stand-out. The Crane Wife works better as an album than a collection of singles, although a few songs do stand out in my opinion. I just feel more attached to it than Amputecture.
I would have bought the Information, but I missed out on it at around $10, and I'm sure as hell not going to buy it at $15.
And my thoughts on the Eraser and 10,000 Days still apply today.

If you were to pick up anything by the Decemberists, I would probably recommend Picaresque first. I went that route, and while none of the ones I've listened to are disappointing, it has the best of what you might want.
"Sixteen Military Wives" is probably going to be their most popular song, plus it features two of my favorites, "We Both Go Down Together" and their best song period, "the Mariner's Revenge Song." The Mariner's Revenge Song is a story; a complete sweeping narrative story.
There's my thoughts, but you might want to consult other sources before taking a dip.
