I do not understand the intense hatred for Coldplay that some people have. They're not amazing, but they're a very enjoyable pop rock band.

They are a direct copy of U2 with less imaginative lyrics and music. And a lot of people hate U2 already (not me), so the hatred of Coldplay is even more intense.

Coldplay is alright at best. Some poppy music, some stuff to fill the time when you're not listening to deathened blackity metal.

Eh, whatever, I really enjoy their first two albums. Sorry. No problem. I don't have any hate toward Coldplay. Then again, my tastes aren't really that credible: I'm listening to Linkin Park right now and not puking... but you are.

After having heard Coldyplay's discography, I'd give them around a 54%. New Top 10 so far: 1. disasterPEACE - Level 2. Motörhead - Motörizer 3. Toumani Diabaté - The Mandé Variations 4. Sigur Rós - Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust 5. Nobuo Uematsu - Final Fantasy IV DS OST 6. Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull 7. Various Musicians at OneUp Studios - Bad Dudes: Super Dodgeball - No Balls, No Glory 8. AC/DC - Black Ice 9. Thomas Newman - WALL•E OST 10. Mitch Hedberg - Do You Believe in Gosh? Still not finalized, but at least I don't have random crap on the list now.

I may not be up to 211 just yet, but I'm hovering around 115. Nice. Where do you record what albums you've heard? Since it seems like I've gained quite a following at Rate Your Music for my 2008 list, I'm in the process of blowing through a whole bunch of 2008 albums. Of course, I'm going for breadth over depth, but I really don't need to listen to some shitty pop punk album over and over again to know I'm probably not digging it, probably won't, and probably would/should listen to something else.

I've got a .txt file on my computer that I scribble down what I've heard.
If you'd like me to post it I surely will, but I can't guarantee you'll know any of the bands.

Based on your last list, I was able to recognize three. So even though I'm pretty sure I'd be able to recognize maybe five bands, tops, you could post it anyways if you want. I'm just amusing myself right now with the thought that you have all this blackity deathened metal on your 2008 list, and here I am listening to a Jewel album right now to record it on my 2008 list.

Almost at 600 albums, and only about 400 of them were worth checking out once Yo drone, I know you're big into blackity deathened metal, but do you listen to noise music much? Because I just heard a Merzbow album yesterday, it actually agreed with me quite well and it reminded me of my limited exposure to the harsher realms of metal. Just was kind of curious what kind of music you like, specifically outside of metal, since I really only recall you liking that specific genre (or genres) of metal.

I have barely listened to anything at all this year.
1. R.E.M.- Accelerate (10/10) 2. Weezer- Weezer (Red Album) (9/10) 3. Matt Pryor- Confidence Man (9/10) 4. Flight of the Conchords- Flight of the Conchords (9/10) 5. Alkaline Trio- Agony & Irony (8/10) 6. Weezer- Christmas With Weezer EP (8/10) 7. Punchline- Just Say Yes (8/10) 8. The A.K.A.s- Everybody Make Some Noise (7/10) 9. Metallica- Death Magnetic (7/10) 10. The Offspring- Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace (4/10)
I'll probably get a couple other albums for Christmas. Coldplay (sorry), TV on the Radio, Rivers Cuomo, maybe a couple others... And a friend is burning me the new Cure disc, so that will probably complete my 2008 listening. Maybe I'll try harder in '09....

Just was kind of curious what kind of music you like, specifically outside of metal, since I really only recall you liking that specific genre (or genres) of metal. I do listen to some noise, but most of it is centered within the metal realm. If you can specify a bit more I can recommend some. As for other genres of music (aside from my coveted metal and respectable sub genres) I listen to some IDM/breakcore, noise, and trance. That's about it, for the most part. As for my top 10 of 2008, here's the best that I could do. 1. Esoteric: The Maniacal Vale2. Raventale: Long Passed Days3. Ars Diavoli: Pro Nihilo Esse4. Decrepit Birth: Diminishing Between Worlds5. Dysthymia: The Shivering Opus6. Origin: Antithesis7. Animus: Hallucinations: Ideals Surrounding Water, Sand, and Clouds of Dust8. Coldworld: Melancholie9. Amenra: Mass IIII10. Nadja: Bliss Torn From EmptinessYou might really enjoy Nadja ie, I suggest giving it a shot. It's drone/doom.

Well, I think I'm going to have to ease into noise, because I did like Dolphin Sonar, but Anicca didn't do too much for me. Do you ever listen to Britney Spears? ;D Thanks, but I've actually tried two Nadja albums recently. I can see why people can like the Bungled & the Botched, but I have just heard much more effective soundscapes. It's like it never went anywhere. Thaumoradiance was a little better, but I can't remember why. I probably liked the cover a little more too. If you want to recommend some of their other albums, or just albums in general, I will consider them fairly. To be a further buzzkill, I thought Esoteric's the Maniacal Vale was okay and thought Coldworld's Melancholie² would have been decent minus all the tough-guy growls in the background. That's probably part of why Njiqahdda's album "Ints | Nji | Verfatu" is my highest rated black metal album right now. At 3 stars out of 5. Well, I didn't mind Eluveitie's Slania and I do like Sun O))). So I guess I just need to work at it a little bit more. edit: I did recently finish an album from a band called Drive by Wire called Between Oceans (download link if interested). It's like stoner metal, which I'm not a stoner or anything but is more up my alley than say, Cookie Monster.

You like Njiqahdda??!?
<333
Seems you enjoy Post-Rock, and since I'm somewhat of a noob in that genre, would you have any suggestions?
I listen to God is an Astronaut, abestoscape (<33), GY!BE, Jesu, Pelican, Red Sparowes, Set Fire To Flames, and a few others.

ZOMG BFF. Well, it was easy to take in ambient music with metal leanings, so it was easy to like. Plus, the name is cool: Nee - Gee - Kaa - Daa I haven't heard as many post-rock albums as I thought I have, but I still think there is far too much post-rock/shoegaze out there, and most of it is shitty, in part because a regular rock song is something like 3 minutes, whereas a post-rock song just stretches that same song to 6 minutes with more guitar distortion and longer notes, plus it is perhaps the easiest form of music to possibly create, but I'll give you a couple suggestions: The Gathering's album Superheat, especially Sand and MercuryFor me, this is probably the best post-rock song I've ever heard. It's all about the build-up, and then the release. Nadja had the build-up part with Bungled & the Botched, but there was no release. For that video, note the shift at around three minutes in. The chord progression sounds better on the Superheat version, but that's what post-rock is all about. Sigur Ros might be up your alley. A little strange, maybe, but they do some good "dream pop" a genre which may appeal to you as well. You might dig Earthless. From my 2008 albums list: "This is the kind of band I wanted the Mars Volta to be. Fortunately, I don't have to worry about that anymore. Plus, the drumming at one part reminded me of a song called Freedom of Expression on the Vanishing Point soundtrack, which I think is amazing." And Mogwai is pretty good, even though some of their stuff isn't that heavy at all. We're No Here is another one of the better post-rock songs I've heard. I've heard of some of those bands, but never really checked 'em out. Godspeed You! Black Emperor especially. For me, that's been like "dude, you haven't heard a single album by the Beatles?" I'd recommend you get a RateYourMusic account sometime. It's a really good place to organize your music, plus there are lots of metalheads there that can probably give you much better recommendations than I can. I just go off of some things here and there, but when you have a database of all the albums you've heard, it's much easier to say "well, you liked these ten albums, how about ten more that are like them?" And besides, most of us are also on RYM as well. Join us.

Wow my top list is shit! Haven't heard much from this year, need to reassess that list. For example, I've gone from liking coldplays album to realising that it's actually quite boring

You liked Fleeting Foxes, which was Pitchfork's favoritest album this year, so it really doesn't matter what the other nine are. You're backed by a major organization. You probably already have secret service guards hiding in your house to protect you, so you're fine. Oh yeah, drone, God is an Astronaut's 2008 album "God is an Astronaut" was kind of lame piano post-rock not unlike Coldplay or something minus the vocals. Maybe they really mellowed out or something?
