Ipods and MP4 converters

So it was my birthday yesterday! 18, I can buy my own booze now etc! So I got an ipod and I have a few little questions.

I understand that videos have to be converted to MP4 format to play on an ipod. Can anyone recommend a good converter which is free? Also from what sources can videos be acquired? I'm mainly thinking about downloading things through limewire or somesuch *cough illegal cough* though is it possible to get films from dvds onto the ipod? If so how? Thanks for coming tips

I doubt it works on video.

In my opinion one of the best ( the only one I know of) is called Videora. Check that out, it has worked really well for me.
