DVD'S I'LL BUY
The Documentaries of Louis Malle - Eclipse Series 2 (Vive le tour / Humain, Trop Humain / Place de la République / Phantom India / Calcutta / God's Country ... of Happiness) - Criterion Collection - Looks fucking amazing, I have only seen one Malle film, but I like him already, and really want to see more of his films. Plus, these docs looks super interesting, especially Phantom India.
Jean Renoir Collection (3-Disc Collector's Edition) - "DISC 1 - Jean Renoir 2 Early Movies: LA FILLE DE L'EAU, NANA. DISC 2 - Jean Renoir Political period: LA MARSEILLAISE, + 2 short films: SUR UN AIR DE CHARLESTON, LA PETITE MARCHANDE D'ALLUMETTES. DISC 3 - 2 Later Movies: LE TESTAMENT DU DOCTEUR CORDELIER, LE CAPORAL EPINGLE" Are you kidding me?! 7 Renoir films for under $20, with some interviews and stuff too!! Everyone should pick this up, I can't believe it.
DVD'S I'LL RENT
Man in the Middle - Mitchum, Guy Hamilton, and has been called a classic. I was pretty much sold by the review of the film on Amazon dot com, where the guy says it has the best opening scene in history, as well as everything else about it being perfect.
- Eh, an "instant cult hit" from 2000?! I am not big into new films as it is, and when they call themselves a cult film right smack on the cover, it seems a little risque. PLOT: "With its loud acting style, exuberant sets and stunning shots in pastel colours, this Thai cult film is as much a parody as an homage to the Western and the romantic tearjerker. " The plot does make it sound much better, I think I will give this a look. anyone know anything about this?
Elegy of a Voyage - I am only checking this film out because it was made by Alexander Sokurov, who also did Russian Ark, so I am kinda interested in this. All Amazon tells me is that it is "two short films caught in the cross-section of painting and film." Which sounds like an interesting concept, and Facets released the film, and they normally release some good stuff.
- A Fox War Classic, except this one is done by Sam Fuller, who I am super interested in. PLOT: "The story of a platoon during the Korean War. One by one Corporal Denno's superiors are killed until it comes to the point where he must try to take command responsiblity." If anyone has seen this, or could recommend any Fuller films, a thread for the man would be a nice addition to the director section, someday at least.
DVD'S I'LL [PROBABLY] IGNORE
.45 - not a huge fan of Milla, although this is suppose to have a good performance from her, and everyone else. I just can't say I am too interested. Just sounds like another "woman takes revenge" film, which I would be all for, if it didn't come out in '07.
10 Items or Less - Eh, two good actors, with a plot that sounds terribly cliche: "An actor (Freeman) prepping for an upcoming role meets a quirky grocery clerk (Vega), and the pair hit the road to show one another their respective worlds."
Code Name: The Cleaner - Trust me, if you haven't seen the trailer for this film, don't, it looks like one of the worst things ever made. Cedric is rarely funny in films, and I don't understand how this could ever get made. Read this plot: "Cedric the Entertainer plays Jake, a seemingly regular guy who has no idea who he is after being hit over the head by mysterious assailants; when he finds himself entangled in a government conspiracy, Jake and his pursuers become convinced that he is an undercover agent." You got to be fucking kidding me, someone could actually read that plot and say "this could be a great film!"
Deja Vu - Not a Tony Scott fan, he made one good film, True Romance, and that is because of Tarantino. Plus, the plot sounds like shit, "An ATF agent travels back in time to save a woman from being murdered, falling in love with her during the process." It could have been an interesting idea, maybe back in the 50s, with a better director making it.
Harry and the Hendersons (Special Edition) - What the hell is this, is this suppose to be like fun 80s cheese? Or is it just shit? It looks horrible haha.
James Cagney - The Signature Collection (The Bride Came C.O.D. / Captains of the Clouds / The Fighting 69th / Torrid Zone / The West Point Story) - I would be willing to get these films someday, if they were any good, but I don't really buy these boxsets, I mean "actor boxsets".
Jane Eyre - One of the many versions of Jane Eyre, but what makes this one seem special is it's cast, with Welles and Joan. Is this version of the film suppose to be any good? I would check it out if it was.
Les Miserables (1935 & 1952 Two-Disc Set) - two versions of the classic story, if anyone knows if these versions are suppose to be any good or not, please tell me. I would check them out, I just don't see any reason to as of yet. The directors don't seem any special.
The Lost Tomb of Jesus - I would be glad to check this film out, it sounds interesting enough, about a group of people who go and look at the coffins that were found 25 years ago, that had many people's names from the bible on them. I just don't know if it is suppose to be any good, anyone seen it, or heard anything about it?
Night at the Museum (Two-Disc Special Edition) - This looks like it could be one of the worst movies ever made, yet people are saying it is actually good. Hell, it is on DVDBeaver, which doesn't mention movies that don't have at least some merit. What do you guys know about this movie, is it really suppose to be good?
Parenthood (Special Edition) - Not a huge Ron Howard fan, and definitely not a huge fan of Steve Martin, although this was his "good" period. And everyone seems to give it good reviews, anyone seen this film? And do you think I would like it?
Play Dirty - Caine WWII film. Looks like it could be good, but nothing about the plot really makes me too interested, so unless someone has seen it, I will just ignore it.
Purple Heart - Another Fox War Classics film. Plot: "This is the story of the crew of a downed bomber, captured after a run over Tokyo, early in the war. Relates the hardships the men endure while in captivity, and their final humiliation: being tried and convicted as war criminals." No one involved really interests me.
The Queen - PLOT: "After the death of Princess Diana, HM Queen Elizabeth II struggles with her reaction to a sequence of events nobody could have predicted." Not interested in this pile of shit at all, it just looks like a movie with an overrated lead performance that would bore me to tears with its modern coventional filming techniques that I don't care about. I already just hate this movie, just because I despise movies that are really mediocre, but that people talk about, especially if those people are critics and the academy.
The Short Films of the Quay Brothers - Brothers who do short films using a blend of puppets and stop motion. Not a big fan of these kind of short experimental films that use animation and stuff. Maybe these are great, and if so, someone will tell me, if not, then I am not interested.
Thr3e - Didn't I barf on this film like a year ago? It looks so fucking terrible, and just terrible horror film. I can't believe they would have the balls to rip se7en off with the title, and the style. I will never see this film in a million years.
Tsunami: The Aftermath - "Inspired by true accounts, this HBO miniseries focuses on a group of fictional characters caught up in the harrowing aftermath of the tsunami that devastated the coast of Thailand two years ago." This sounds like it could be good, although I have heard nothing about it. Anyone know if it is good? My parents say it was "pretty good".
Until Death - Van Damme, haha! YES! Sike! "Tagline: They put him in a coma, now he's going to put them out of their misery." Oh God, haha!
Anna Karenina - PLOT: "Stefan and Dolly Oblonsky have had a little spat and Stefan has asked his sister, Anna Karenina, to come down to Moscow to help mend the rift. Anna's companion on the train from St. Petersburg is Countess Vronsky who is met at the Moscow station by her son. Col. Vronsky looks very dashing in his uniform and it's love at first sight when he looks at Anna and their eyes meet. Back in St. Petersburg they keep running into each other at parties. Since she has a husband and small son, they must be very discreet if they are going to see each other alone." It has Leigh in it, and was directed by Duvivier who directed Pépé le Moko, which is on Criterion, but I have never heard of this film. I will probably end up seeing it if I like that Criterion, or if someone knows this is suppose to be good.
China Doll - PLOT: "In China gruff Air Force captain Cliff Brandon wakes up after a night of drinking to discover he has purchased the housekeeping services of comely, young Shu-Jen from her father. Disappointed by Cliff's insistence on staying out late in bars, Shu-Jen leaves for home when Cliff, made aware that she is carrying her child, finds her and marries her in a delightful traditional Chinese ceremony. Happy days are spent as Shu-Jen and her infant daughter join Cliff at a forward base until Cliff, returning from a supply-drop mission, hears the base is under attack by Japanese bombers." Don't know anything about this other than the plot I posted, so if this is a classic or anything, please tell me.
Forgotten Noir, Vol. 4 (The Man from Cairo / Mask of the Dragon) - "Forgotten Noir" reminds me of "Forgotten Lore" from the poem The Raven. There are a bunch of these, which I would be willing to check out someday, but not unless someone specifically recommends me one of these, will I go out of my way for these specific DVDs.
Forgotten Noir, Vol. 5 (FBI Girl / Tough Assignment)
Forgotten Noir, Vol. 6 (I'll Get You / Fingerprints Don't Lie)
Forgotten Noir Collector's Set 2 (Man From Cairo / Mask of the Dragon / FBI Girl / Tough Assignment / I'll Get You / Fingerprints Don't Lie) - Boxset of all the films.
I Deal in Danger - PLOT: "A U.S. double agent blows up an underground Nazi lab. From the "Blue Light" TV series." No one I recognize involved. It is a self-proclaimed classic though.
The Panic in Needle Park - Pacino is in this film from 1971. PLOT: "This movie is a stark portrayal of life among a group of heroin addicts who hang out in "Needle Park" in New York city. Played against this setting is a low-key love story between Bobby, a young addict and small-time hustler, and Helen, a homeless girl who finds in her relationship with Bobby the stability she craves. She becomes addicted too, and life goes downhill for them both as their addiction deepens, eventually leading to a series of betrayals. But, in spite of it all, the relationship between Bobby and Helen endures." I am actually really interested in this film, anyone know anything about it? I will probably check it out one day.
The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes - Another Quay brothers film. PLOT: "Dark fairytale about a demonic doctor who abducts a beautiful opera singer with designs on transforming her into a mechanical nightingale. " Same thoughts as the set.
Sailor of the King - PLOT: "A British naval officer has a brief affair with a woman in England and never knows that she bears him a son. 20 years later the boy is on a ship under his command when he is tracking a German Raider. When the boy is captured after his ship is sunk, he finds a way to slow the German's progress while a lethal hunt for him goes on." Same thoughts as most of these other Fox "Classics".
