DVD'S I'LL BUY
Pan's Labyrinth - My family and I saw this in the theater and it is totally worth buying. It was probably one of the best films I saw from 2006. Anyone who hasn't seen it should at least rent it.
Général Idi Amin Dada: Autoportrait R2 - Probably won't buy this for years, but I am going to buy all these MOC releases. I will check out the Criterion before this.
DVD'S I'LL RENT
Becket - Did someone tell me to rent this before? If not, then I am not too interested. PLOT: "An English king comes to terms with his affection for his close friend and confidant, who finds his true honor by observing God's divine will rather than the king's."
The Fountain - I know, settle down, I want to buy this, and probably will, but my dad is going to rent it, so I might as well just check it out first before I buy it. I haven't heard much negative stuff, so I bet it will be great.
Army of Shadows- Criterion Collection - I want to buy this, but there are too many DVD's I need more. I am going to rent this though. I need to see more Melville. Check it's thread for more info.
Vengeance Is Mine - Criterion Collection - I was going to buy this, but the features don't look very good, but I want to rent this first, then I might buy this, or the MoC version. It looks fantastic though.
DVD'S I'LL IGNORE
Arthur and the Invisibles - Oh man, why would Luc Besson stoop this low? It gets decent reviews, but is, I guess, very unoriginal. DeNiro is also in this.
Creepshow III - Why would someone do this? The original was so much fun. This has a TERRIBLE rating on Amazon, too. PLOT: "This third installment in the George Romero/Stephen King-launched anthology series features five new tales of horror and a wraparound. The main stories deal with alternative realities ("Alice"), possessed communication devices ("The Radio"), vampires and serial killers in lust ("Call Girl"), mad inventors ("The Professor's Wife"), and hauntings from beyond ("Haunted Dog")." Romero is probably furious.
Curse of the Zodiac - PLOT: "Inspired by the true story of the Serial Killer who terrorized Northern California during the sixties and seventies. His use of cryptic symbols and coded messages fueled the police and media frenzy and made him one of America's most notorious unsolved cases. " What the fuck is this? This is so obviously trying to make money off of Zodiac. A reviewer called this "bottom of the barrel garbage" haha.
Fired! - This actually sounds interesting, but I know nothing about it. PLOT: "When actress Annabelle Gurwitch was fired from a play by Woody Allen, she wondered how she would cope with being downsized by a cultural icon. Turning to friends in show business she was assured she was not alone. Fired! features funny moments and tragic tales with a who’s-who of top-rated comedians and actors." Anyone heard, or know anything about this? Maybe andruini will know, since he is so big on Woody. If this is funny, or suppose to be good I would be willing to check it out.
The Perfect Marriage - PLOT: "The beautiful and ambitious Annie discovers that her charming and seductive lover, Brent, has conned her into killing her husband only to steal away her inheritance. Fearing a future haunted by lies and murder, Annie leaves her lover and assumes a new identity. Her new life proves to be a dream come true as she remarries a wealthy real estate heir and enjoys a lavish lifestyle. However, Brent tracks her down with plans to repeat his deadly scam. Will he convince her to kill again?" No reviews, but judging by the cover it just looks like one of those straight to DVD deals.
Seraphim Falls - PLOT: "At the end of the Civil War, a colonel hunts down a man with whom he has a grudge. " It is for fans of the genre, says Amazon.com. They say it is really well-acted, but doesn't do too much new. I am not a huge western fan myself, so I won't be checking this out, but beed, or other western fans might want to check it out.
Spark - PLOT: "Young Chicagoans Byron (Academy Award nominee Terrence Howard) and Nina (Nicole Ari Parker) are stuck in a one-tumbleweed town after their car breaks down on the way to Los Angeles. Befriending the geeky, melancholy son of a racist garage mechanic, the quarreling lovers become more involved in the locals' ugly secrets than they ever could have imagined. In the vein of Crash, Spark is an insightful study of race relations that also works well as a bare-bones thriller. " Oh, God. When I saw the banner on the top I thought this might be some good black exploitation series or something, but it doesn't really look like it. Also, that Crash comparison won't get many people to see this either.
Stomp the Yard - This looks like one of the worst films that have come out recently. If anyone has seen You Got Served you might know what I am talking about. Please don't read the following if you are afraid you will barf, PLOT: "After the death of his younger brother, a troubled 19-year-old street dancer from Los Angeles is able to bypass juvenile hall by enrolling in the historically black, Truth University in Atlanta, Georgia. But his efforts to get an education and woo the girl he likes are sidelined when he is courted by the top two campus fraternities, both of which want and need his fierce street-style dance moves to win the highly coveted national step show competition. "
The Thirst - Oh man, Alec Baldwin stoops this low? Again, the cover is really giving off that "straight to dvd" feel.
The War Tapes - This could be good, but I am not in the mood for a war doc right now. Someone might want to check this out though. PLOT: "Called up for service in Iraq, several members of the National Guard were given digital video cameras. This film, edited from their footage, provides a perspective on a complex and troubled conflict."
