Gandhi-Richard Attenborough Chris' Favorite films # 14. People ask me, "Well you have all these violent films on your top list, but then you have Gandhi. How does that work?". Here is how it works. I don't admire a film for its violence, but some films that I love have a decent amount of violence in them. I don't sit down to watch a film and judge it because of the amount of violence in it. I judge it by how good the film is.
Well, enough of my rant. On to the review of this great film. First let me tell you how fabulous Ben Kingsley is in this role. You really feel that he IS Gandhi. Not just some actor trying to portray him. You feel like you are watching the actual Gandhi doing his work in India. All the rest of the performances are fantastic in this as well.
If you know your history, you pretty much know the story of Gandhi's life. How his peaceful protest led to Britain giving up there control of India. It is a shame such a peaceful man had his life end in such a violent way. Gandhi would be very upset with the situation in the Middle East today. The film shows you a glimpse of thr riots to come torwards the end of the film. And, it shows Gandhi's views and his beautiful solution for the problem between the Hindus and the Muslims. I truly admire Gandhi, I think that we should all live our lives in the peaceful manner in which he lived his. 100/100

That's because he is doing his top 20. He really should do some other non-100/100 films too.

Personally I wouldn't give anything 100/100. The highest I would ever give a film is 97. As for what that film would be, I have no clue.

So, you think that there is not a single perfect film? I disagree.

As do I. There are many films that are perfect in their own ways.

Nothing is perfect. Even the very best films have slight flaws. Eg Chinatown, its wonderful but sometimes it moves to fast for its own good and not every scene connects well. That would make it about a 90/100 I'd say.
RAN is a great film but some of the costumes are silly and its overlong.
Jules et Jim is great but the era its set in seems pointless and Catherine is a somewhat patchy character.

Gandhi was way too long. I remember I paused it and took a nap and then watched the rest of it. It is good but way too long and boring. The Last Emperor was a much better movie of the same type in my personal opinion.
