Dead Man- Jim Jarmusch. Chris favorite movies. New #18. As you can probably guess, even though I love movies, I haven't seen every one. So, I watch the ones I haven't seen to see if I can find gems. Tonight, I found one. Dead Man is a spectacular western directed by one of the best filmmakers of today, Jim Jarmusch. It documents the sudden turn of a quiet accountant into a quiet killer.
In the movie, Johnny Depp is William Blake, an accountant who is traveling west to the town of Machine for an accounting job. Once he gets there, however, he is declined by the head of the company. Later that night, he is sleeping with a woman when a man walks in. The man kills the woman, and William Blake kills him. Blake then meets the Indian Nobody, who leads him on a vision quest. From there, the movie gets really deep. Examining the existence of Blake and of the people of the old west.
The man that Blake killed is coincidently the son of the head of Dickinson Metalworks. The company that fired Blake. Dickinson sends men after Blake and posts wanted posters. The killers are hilarious, especially Hendrikson, who looks like he is having the time of his life sinking his teeth into the chrarcter of Cole Wilson. I loved this movie. It felt like it flew by while I was watching it. Not only did it exercise my brain, it entertained me also. See, this film. You won't be sorry that you did. 100/100

I'll have to watch this film sometime soon. Tim says this is one of the few good Jarmusch films so I trust him and will have to give this a go.

Oh, yeah, this is great. But you didn't find it, I showed you the way. You know this smokes Ghost Dog in every way possible.

It is a better film than Ghost Dog. But it does not smoke it.

Ghost dog is poor. Jim Jarmusche seems like little more than a pretentious thief. I haven't seen his other films though.

I agree with you that he is very pretentious. I like him alittle bit though.

I love Jarmusch, my 4th favorite director. I dont get all the Ghost Dog criticism either. It was an original film and it was very well made. Just because he took some stuff from Suzuki and Melville doesnt mean he steals films. Tarantino steals a lot, more than any other director, and his films are still good, Why isn't Jarmusch allowed? I can understand if you dont like Ghost Dog's premise, but it is far from a bad movie.

It makes me puke when you say he is your fourth favorite director.

Dead Man owns! It has one of my favourite quotes/scenes ever.
Nobody: That weapon will replace your tongue. You will learn to speak through it. And your poetry will now be written with blood. ...later on Marvin: You William Blake? William Blake: Yes, I am. Do you know my poetry? *BANG*

Glad you love this movie. It is one of my all time favorites and I don't think it will ever come off my top 20 list.

I didn't dig it as much as Stranger Than Paradise, Down By Law, Broken Flowers and Ghost Dog. But they're all 10/10s as far as I'm concerned.
