Mother-fucking Snakes on a Mother-fucking Plane – B+
“You know all those security scenarios we ran? Well I'm smack in the middle of one we didn't think of.”
It’s finally here. After waiting practically all year, Snakes on a Plane has finally been released. One of the most hyped movies of the summer has arrived but almost everyone expects it to be a failure of biblical proportions but, is it possible that it just may be good?
The story is very simple: There are Snakes on a Plane. Ok, there is more to it than that (but not that much). On board a flight over the Pacific Ocean, an assassin, bent on killing a passenger who's a witness in protective custody, lets loose a crate full of deadly snakes. That’s as deep as this movie goes but it doesn’t matter; it’s so much damn fun that you don’t care how shallow the plotline is.
Sam Jackson+Snakes+Plane=Genius. Ok, maybe that is stretching it a bit but it’s a great premise, albeit a tad farfetched. The heard of this movie is undeniably Same Jackson as Neville Flynn. He owns every single shot he is in with every single line he utters. The Snakes themselves look convincing for the most part. There are some shoddy FX shots here and there but most of the time they are good enough to get the job done. The rest of the cast is solid as well. There are some iffy performances here and there but overall it is much better than you’d expect in a movie like this. There are a good variety of victims and no two are dispatched of in the same manner (there are some really creative, and funny, kills here).
There’s not too much to say about the score to this movie. Just like the movie, it is over the top but that’s not a bad thing. There is nothing particularly memorable here but it works within the context of the film. At the end they play the music video for the theme song that some band has made. The song really isn’t that bad surprisingly and I know of at least a couple of people who were singing it on the way out of the theater.
Despite what you may or may not think, this movie is not a comedy; that is, its not meant to be one. Everyone involved in the making of this movie knows how absurd it really is but they make the movie serious but know that the audience will find things funny. This isn’t one of those unintentionally funny movies where everything is so bad, it’s funny. It is pulled off in a serious manner but its fully aware of itself and how absurd it truly is. This is a truly wonderful popcorn flick.
Now, anyone going into this movie expecting a serious action/horror film will be seriously disappointed. There is enough action and horror though. Critically, this is not a good movie but from an entertainment standpoint it is very very good. It completely blew away everyone’s expectations that, suffice to say, were not that good to begin with. I mean honestly, did anyone seriously go into this expecting a good movie? No, we all thought it would be terrible but we saw it anyways. This movie was better than it really had any right to be and that really is saying something. Go into this movie expecting something extremely fun, nothing more and nothing less.
