O.K, I know most people don't really have too much to do with videogames here but what the hell, I mais well start making topics around here for some pretty good upcoming games so that it may be possible to revive some of you out of your Zelda, Link, Mario, Luigi, street fighter induced comas.... Anyhow, one that is looking particularly good at this point is called "Bioshock" It's a spiritual successor to the immensely popular older "System Shock" series. These were perhaps some of the creepiest, hardhitting, games I've ever played. Now, while Bioshock looks trully original and amazing I doubt it will live up to my expectations or my set standards that it has to meet based off of its predecessor... Based on some pictures I've seen of it the developers have already sacrificed some quality in order to compensate for the Consoles reduced hardware and limited control schemes... Anyways, qualms aside, I'll get whomever may be reading this and have no idea what I'm babbling about up to par on what the story is all about and how the game will actually play...
Now, Before I begin I would like to clarify that this has nothing to do with any of the previous system shock games.. If you want to know exactly what they're about wiki em'. Anyhow....
//Bioshock//
The story takes place somewhere around the mid/early twentieth century in an underwater settlement called rapture. You end up there apparently when your plane goes down over an ocean and you end up finding an odd kind of buoy with a strange craft attached to it which you character (unnamed) gets into as he has pretty much no alternative... As I said the game takes place in this underground city (think kinda 20,000 leagues under the sea style) and when you arrive its in ruins. Your character, unaware as to whats happened in this place begins his journey here.
I'll give a little detail on Rapture about what is known about it. It apparently was built by a self proclaimed "mad scientist" it was to serve as a safe haven for the elite of society... The repressed brilliant geniuses. It was here where they could avoid moral obligations/ restrictions that posed as "barriers" to their brilliance in the real world. It was also here where "adam" was discovered. Adam is not a person, but rather the name for a rare substance found deep under the sea which allows users to genetically manipulate their characteristics.. This change prompted a mass gathering effort in the society and soon became the way of life in Rapture, it soon became the currency in this civilization... a way of life. Soon enough it would become Rapture's downfall as well. You see, one of the big moral issues that will be presented in the game is change. Which I feel has the ability to be far scarier than any monster or serial killer I see in popular media these days. This "change" brought from the adam resulted in the downfall of its citizens.. Broke them down to the point where it resulted in the "fractionation" of the settlement where those aganist adam began a "civil war" against those with it. Of course those with the adam won, due to the improvements they could make to themselves through genetic modification. Usually there is a period of peace between wars though... that was definatly not the case here.. the bodies from the original outbreak of fighting didn't even have time to get cleaned up before the adam addicted-crazed citizens began fighting themselves for more. It became like a drug. No one could get enough.
This is where your character comes in. One of the neat things in this game is that YOU are in control of who or what you turn your character into. Do you embrace adam in order to make your life easier? Or do you avoid it like rape? Do you avoid the remaining inhabitants residing in the wastland or rapture? Do you attack them? Or do you want to be their savior? You make your own moral choices for the game. Thats one of the major driving forces behind me anticipating this title so much.. Anyhoo, I'll point you in the direction of a trully good "walkthrough" kinda movie which will help explain to you in detail some of the various inner workings in the game. Here is the walk through/ explanation video: www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=13983&type=wmv&pl=game
Heres another pretty cool trailer: www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=13583&type=wmv&pl=game
Pickz.. cause they're hot liek interwebz
